80's Classic: Katrina & The Waves - "Walking On Sunshine" C/D

Heard this song in a store today. For some reason it really hit me hard. You know what I mean, when you haven't heard something in a long, long time and all you want to do is stand there and listen. I remember hearing it in a clothing store when I was a teenager and buying the 45 soon after. It's a classic song. And yes, I know that Kimberly Rew from The Soft Boys was involved (Robyn Hitchcock's old band). I guess I'm just wondering what ILX folks might have to say about it. I couldn't find any threads for it.

I love Rew's riff as it's reminiscent of the Soft Boys but put in an entirely different context. Great song all in all I guess.

Cunga, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

Original version, awesome. Re-recorded 1985 single version, suX0rz.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

That goes double for "Going Down to Liverpool," as well.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck! I guess I should hear the original version then!

Bimble, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

Great song in either version -- one of the few overplayed eighties touchstones that sounds great, in large part thanks to the lust in Katrina's voice.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

But how do I know whether I've downloaded the original version??

Bimble, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

The Scott Litt remix has the horn section.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 15 July 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I kind of take back my "suX0rz" proclamation upthread. The Litt remix is alright in its own way (maybe even preferable on a bright sunny day).

But I stand by my view of the re-recorded "Going Down to Liverpool." COMPLETE BS!

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 15 July 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

maybe one of my ten least favorite songs of all-time

The Good Dr. Bill, Sunday, 15 July 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, well, go commiserate with Geir, he probably feels the same way.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 July 2007 04:24 (eighteen years ago)

let's see, do i have a personal anecdote connected to this song? yes! when i was a jr. in high school i got recruited out of the band percussion section to play drums for the middle school choir's rendition of "walking on sunshine," which they were performing at some choir competition out of town. so me and this high school sr. named dave who played piano had to ride a bus loaded with 6th-8th graders out to cow country jr. high to provide musical backing for what sounded more or less like a rural american kidz bop session (complete with rather wobbly backbeat, courtesy of me). what i mostly remember is dave (who was 18 or so and leader of a prince cover band) hitting on the 8th-grade girls. so i've kind of associated the song with lolita-ish indecency ever since.

still, classic.

tipsy mothra, Sunday, 15 July 2007 05:17 (eighteen years ago)

(i do not remember who won the competition, but i kind of doubt it was us.)

tipsy mothra, Sunday, 15 July 2007 05:19 (eighteen years ago)

That's the kind of posting that makes me glad I started the thread.

Also I think I've found the original version of this now.

Bimble, Sunday, 15 July 2007 06:13 (eighteen years ago)

Of the pre-Capitol/Scott Litt stuff, also search: "She Loves to Groove."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 15 July 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

And any version of "The Game of Love."

One of the Waves (Kimberly Rew, specifically) was in the fuckin' Soft Boys. RESPECT IS DUE!

this song: classic
my karaoke rendition of it: dud

impudent harlot, Sunday, 15 July 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Bimble, long time no talk. . .anyway, the essential KaTW package is Bongo Beat's reissue of the first two Canadian LPs on one CD, plus there's a DVD included of a fantastic ca. '83 gig on some US Army base in Europe. As mentioned above, this is all the pre-Capitol, pre-Scott Litt recordings. This (and the Capitol LP) were the high-water marks.
_Waves_ is also worth finding, _Break of Hearts_ (which ended the game for them in North America) less so, and there's three Euro-only '90s-era discs. Rew's recent solo albums are OK but don't bear much resemblance to the KaTW stuff.

I often find myself whistling the horn part from this song without even realizing it. this is how I know that I am in a good mood.

The Bangles version was much better.

Love it. It'd be a dud without Katrina's vocals.

otherwise, and twat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 November 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

of course. i'd never want to hear a cover of this, but i'd never not want to hear the original.

original better than tolerable, remake dire.

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Sunday, 14 November 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Original (Kimberly Rew, right?) okay to good, remake marvelous, thanks to Katrina Leskanich. Here's a pop voice if there was any. Any questions?

otherwise, and twat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 November 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

Leskanich sang both, so there's that

potholes and esso assos (Hunt3r), Monday, 15 November 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)

Are we talking about the Scott Litt remix?

I hate this song more than I can even try to describe.

i always sympathized with light fast upbeat pop without any remorse.
still, in a perfect world this would have been even more successful:

five years pass...

I wondered for a long time why their first two albums only came out in Canada, considering they're an English band. Turns out, it was the only label who expressed interest. So they were essentially a Canadian band for 3 years.

I think the Indigo Girls might have borrowed a little bit of "Brown Eyed Sun" for "Closer to Fine."

god damn I love the one-note guitar solo on this

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 26 December 2016 06:29 (nine years ago)

Why was I being so hard to the 1985 version of "Liverpool" upthread? I just relistened to it and it's not horrific at all. It's different than the original, and the Bangles' version by extension, but it's nice enough in its own way.
