There needs to be a thread dedicated to this album exclusively.
I daresay they are the remedy for Joy Division fans who can't stand Interpol (like me!). And then when they bring in the piano on Squalor Victoria, I just die. I bet Leonard Cohen type folks would probably like the album, too. Production is fantastic. Listen to the acoustic guitar sound on "Green Gloves". I'm not a big fan of "Slow Show", though.

very good tindersticks substitute
― akm, Sunday, 15 July 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)
A pretty good album, with all the sincere moments in the right place. OTM about the production. This is what I wished Interpol should sounded like: a quiet-but-menacing vibe that's at the point of expressing itself in sexual violence.

*er, omit should from that sentence.
There should be a rule on ILX that you never double post just to correct some spelling/grammatical/word error. No one cares man! Just leave it as beautifully imperfect as it is. Sorry, not trying to pick on you specifically, Alfred, this is a systemic issue.

The National 'Alligator'

I have a hard time taking that post-Cohen "smoky" voice seriously. Tindersticks going for that Coldplay dollar, which is more respectable than the whole Scott Walker movie soundtrack/cabaret thing, I guess.

I love this album! top five of the year, easily
― stephen, Sunday, 15 July 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, my fave of the year so far.

This album kind of bores me now. But it is way better than teh new interpol.

on letterman in a few minutes...
― hstencil, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)
weird, pausing them on itunes to watch them on letterman :/ tindersticks is a good comparison. The opening track is very nice. Seems downhill after that though.
― bnw, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)
that was nice.
― hstencil, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)
I just caught the last 20 seconds of that, but it was intriguing enough to check out later.
― Z S, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)
yeah sounded a little more chaotic at the end then on the album
― bnw, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:40 (eighteen years ago)
good camera angles
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)
Really? I honestly only caught the last bit, but it didn't sound chaotic. It sounded sort of like a Thrill Jockey band.
― Z S, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:43 (eighteen years ago)
he said it was more chaotic than the album, not that it was chaotic in general.
was slightly slower too. liked it.

Dave should have given them the trophy
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)
what was the song?
― Drooone, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:58 (eighteen years ago)
"Dancing on the Ceiling"
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)
(fake empire)
― gabbneb, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)
I don't get why "Fake Empire" is the commonly agreed on standout, other than that it comes first. It's all pretty samey, and there are other songs that stuck with me more.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 05:43 (eighteen years ago)
The Letterman appearance showed just how collaborative a band they are - fine, fine stuff.
― christoff, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)
I gotta say, I love the dude's delivery on "Fake Empire." If you listen to the first verse on headphones he is very precisely pausing at the end of each line and making the final sound part of the next line. I don't know how better to describe it, it's just really cool.
― call all destroyer, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)
I hear more John Cale than Leonard Cohen in the guy's delivery.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)
My album of the year, unless something unexpected happens.

― W4LTER, Thursday, 23 August 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)
Was that meant as a dig at me?
― W4LTER, Thursday, 23 August 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)
Becasue that album hasn't leaked yet, you see.

Yeah, Boxer is still the one for me. It's led me to check out their first s/t album, which is equally fine.
