Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

LOL I FORGOT ABOUT BLESSID UNION OF SOULS

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Who the fuck is Leonardo?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

Fastball had another hit??

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

OK, this is where I really vote for Garbage.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

blink-182 or Oleander is probably going to be my vote though. Presuming I don't refuse to vote out of principle.

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

I think Leonardo means "hey, pretty-boy" (as in diCaprio), based on the name's use in the song

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Just for the complete absurdity of it being one of the 20th century's last big hits that's carried over some notoriety into the 21st century, I vote "Nookie."

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

Fastball had another hit??

It's the only Fastball hit I'd ever heard of (before they showed up on a previous poll). Vote for it. It's mercifully brief.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

thank god I am going to be able to tell my kids that, in our great moments of triumphant reflection upon the approach of the third millenium, we were all singing "Chante's Got A Man"

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

ALL STAR OR NOOKIE I CAN'T DECIDE

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

There's some other thread where a bunch of us agreed that Hey Leonardo is the worst song ever recorded.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Who the fuck is Oleander?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

nerf grunge

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

A milder Staind, I think, but I might be wrong.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

IS SOMEONE GONNA VOTE FOR ALL STAR OR NOOKIE? IF SO, POST THAT SO I CAN VOTE FOR THE OTHER AND FEEL OKAY.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think there's much love on ILM for Limp Bizkit. Apart from Miccio.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

I AM THE MICCIO YOU SPEAK OF, POST-ILX CHANGEOVER.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oleander is a post-grunge band from Sacramento, California, USA. Its name is derived from the poisonous wildflower oleander.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Oleander's big hit was "I Walk Alone" BTW

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

olestra would be a great name for a "post-grunge" band.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

and a great influence

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

ok I've written Oleander off my list, fuck "post-grunge"

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

Check above, Anthony. I voted "Nookie."

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

YAAAAAAY THANK YOU. Missed that. "All Star" it is, then.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

The comp's selections mirror the 2000 Democratic convention to a T.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:52 (eighteen years ago)

can we talk about how "what's my age again?" is far and away the best song here?

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

Ahh, Glad to know you are back!
x-posts

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:54 (eighteen years ago)

xpost I voted for it

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'll vote for Blink when "The Rock Show" ends up on one of these polls.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

The comp's selections mirror the 2000 Democratic convention to a T.

But there's no "Praise You"! And on that note, I ended up voting for "The Rockafeller Skank" I even have a "Right About Now..." t-shirt somewhere.

C. Grisso/McCain, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

I bought Now! Vol. 1
I bought Now! Vol. 2
I bought Now! Vol. 4

I read the tracklisting for Now! Vol. 3 and said "THAT'S BAD"

Tape Store, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

NOW THAT'S BAD

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

DAMNIT

Tape Store, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Age Again" fucking sucks! worst single off Enema.

Then later on, on the drive home
I called her mom from a pay phone
I said I was the cops
And your husband's in jail
This state looks down on sodomy
And that's about the time that bitch hung up on me

NOT GOOD SONG

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

all lyrics after "we started making out, and she took off my pants/ but then i turned on the tv" are irrelevant.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember ANY of these R&B singles.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

hey jordan, you should check out this band called the bloodhound gang. it's like that shit CUBED.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

That "Chante's Got a Man" song is the most Republican R&B shit ever.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

yes i'm siskel, yes i'm ebert and you're getting two thumbs up.

Jordan Sargent, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, can't resist:

Sisterhood is powerful--not! Faced with a friend whose lover is not only "cheatin'" but "beatin'" on her, Chante Moore informs her that she must get home because "Chante's Got a Man." Unfortunately not an update of Positive K's self-deprecating early-'90s rap hit "I Got a Man," This Moment Is Mine's first single instead is all too typical of an ego fest of an album that also finds the singer praising (on "Blooming Flower") the "shining colors of a love that's ours," then kicking the guy to the curb because "I'm on a course set before we met." The efforts of star producers such as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jermaine Dupri, and Rodney Jerkins are all sadly wasted on this soft-soul project, whose depth is perhaps best indicated by this liner-note shout out to Jesus: "You are so awesome. Thank you for being God!"

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like Limp Bizkit, although I still think their few best singles were better than most top 40 rock in 2007. "Nookie" wins.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

If "The Bad Touch" were on this CD, my vote would have gone there.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

I would have made sure someone voted for that one too, yes.

da croupier, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with "Out Of My Head" is that it's:

verse
chorus
chorus
chorus

It's a lovely song but seems unfinished.

My vote goes to Rockefeller Skank...classic.

musically, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah... this volume is really bad...

dr. phil, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Tell Me It's Real, though, that's almost as good as Fatboy Slim.

dr. phil, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

I just voted for Fastball: WTF2K7?!

Tape Store, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

this volume series is really bad

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

OK this volume really does suck

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 05:40 (eighteen years ago)

I mean am I actually going to tick Fatboy fucking Slim here

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

i always vote before reading any comments. voted for "nookie" and don't even feel guilty about it now.

drone/a/sore, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

Voted Fatboy Slim because the rest either sucks bigtime or I've never ever heard them.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

this was really really hard. first I go for "Special," but then I'm all like "Can I imagine life without 'What's My Age Again'?" And then I think of the "Nookie" sample and LOL and then I think of Blessid Union of Souls and LOL harder.

anyways, I guess I can't imagine life without "What's My Age Again"

sovietpanda, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

At the time I would've picked Rockafeller Skank but Special may just be the best thing Garbage recorded so that wins by a nose. Better video too fwiw.

Billy Dods, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

1999 was a fantastic singles year, but I'm struggling to remember why looking through these titles.

Eric H., Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

Garbage, though Fatboy Slim's close.

2for25, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Jesus: "You are so awesome. Thank you for being God!"

!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Sad volume indeed.

1. Fatboy Slim : "The Rockafeller Skank"
2. blink-182 : "What's My Age Again?"
3. Smash Mouth : "All Star"
4. Backstreet Boys : "All I Have to Give"
5. Britney Spears : "Sometimes"

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

wait why didn't I vote for Fatboy

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Blimey. The Rockafeller Skank and What's My Age Again? are the only two of these I actually know.

Alba, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

I mean am I actually going to tick Fatboy fucking Slim her

i don't know that Case track but if you don't you probably would...i bet (if 'Touch Me Tease Me' is anything to go by)

blueski, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

1999 was a fantastic singles year

Wrong. Teenpop sounded decent at times, but 1999 seemed to be mainly about bad latino (Gloria Estefan used to do that genre a lot better) and dream trance/commercial trance. Travis was more or less creating a new genre that would dominate European album charts of the 00s (which was good) and in the US R&B was already dominating, still anticipating the 00/01 R&B invasion of the European charts (which was bad).

But in the meantime, 99 was a weak year for music in general. In spite of that Travis album.....

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

For eight years you've been saying this?

Eric H., Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

That blink 182 album was the first cd I ever bought...I'm young.

jonathan - stl, Saturday, 21 July 2007 04:41 (eighteen years ago)

YOU WERE WRONG

Tape Store, Saturday, 21 July 2007 04:49 (eighteen years ago)

If Now 2 was the first album I remember my parents buying for me this is the first album I played over and over again. It doesn't look that bad today but that's probably the pull of nostalgia.

Cunga, Saturday, 21 July 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)

Are you fifteen?

Tape Store, Saturday, 21 July 2007 05:26 (eighteen years ago)

Nineteen and I was a very, very late bloomer when it came to listening to pop music.

Cunga, Saturday, 21 July 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

Well, you didn't miss much unless you had started listening to pop music as a preschooler :)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Nineteen and I was a very, very late bloomer when it came to listening to pop music.

^^ haha this is me

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 21 July 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

actually I think the Now 2 era is EXACTLY when I started listening to pop music (it was about when Britney hit)

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 21 July 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 21 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

lol nookie @ 2

impudent harlot, Saturday, 21 July 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I started in buyin' pop* in '95, suckers.

*parents started buyin' me pop, at my request obv.

Tape Store, Saturday, 21 July 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

LOL IF I'D VOTED FOR NOOKIE IT WOULD HAVE WON

Oh, how ILX has changed.

da croupier, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

(it was about when Britney hit)

I remember a boy in sixth grade taking out a crumpled profile of Britney from "People" and when I asked him who this was and why he was carrying it around with him he reprimanded me for not knowing who Britney Spears was and said that it was impossible to find pictures of her on the internet. It's funny, at the time I was starting to watch wrestling again and so I associated her last name with Goldberg's finisher for quite awhile after.

This was right around when he second single was coming out.

Cunga, Sunday, 22 July 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm fine with Nookie coming in a respectable second place.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 July 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

I should have put "Nookie" in my top five. That was an oversight.

The Reverend, Sunday, 22 July 2007 08:18 (eighteen years ago)

I was starting to watch wrestling again and so I associated her last name with Goldberg's finisher

hahaha "Xtina, YOU'RE NEXT!"
