Now That's What I Call Music 29 (UK)

Why should we poll the US comps only?

Why this number 29, you ask? Because back in the nineties it used to be my favourite volume in the series, and still probably is.

Impossible.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

Incredible

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

is in my Top 5. maybe.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

There's so many great tunes there, but personally I have to go for the Erasure song. What an underrated synth pop gem!

Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

But I might have to vote for "Gal Wine"

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

What a great year 1994 was!

Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

Then only artists I can't remember at all are Ultimate KAOS and 2wo Third3. Who were they?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I got the idea to do polls for the US series after someone started doing the UK series here.

Anyway, "Trouble" is the obvious winner, end poll etc.

Ultimate Kaos were a black boy band, literally boys, who had a couple of minor hits here including this and 'Hoochie Bootie'

2wo Third3 were a trio of lads keen to peddle PSB-influenced synth-pop to young City boys. should've tried to be a bit more Blancmange than Heaven 17. the song is alright tho.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

you should really write a book!

admrl, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

I bet you would love my brother's collection of early-to-mid-90s cassingles.

admrl, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

2wo third3 had the gimmick of having 2 gay guys out of the three, and You Had To Guess Who The Straight Guy Was!

no-one cared.

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

adam i would like to write a kids book.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

'Sly' is my favourite song on this.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think there's a single good song on this.

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

you don't even like 'True Faith' (i don't think the version on this is much different from the original at all assuming it's not that Oakenfoldy mix which got less than half the airplay at the time)?

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

actually i do like true faith (although not a great deal) i missed it when i skimmed the list. 7 seconds is good, i missed that too. midnight at the oasis is alright as well.

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

re: "true faith" - i think it's ok but wouldn't actually like to listen to it. i like Massive attack a lot but never liked "sly" and can't actually recall it now.

jed_, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I like We Have All the Time In The World! and Incredible!

admrl, Thursday, 19 July 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

Whigfield ftw.

kv_nol, Thursday, 19 July 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

you need ears of southall to distinguish the "94" versions of those new order tracks. i can't tell the difference.

between 'sly' and 'incredible' for me. probably go with 'incredible'. surprised that no. 24 smash 'sly' is on there tbh. it could do without the pizzicato craig armstrong bidniz.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

I went with True Faith, tho Confide In Me is great too.

like i say the Oakenfold mix is different enough - i think the version of 'True Faith' New Order were playing in their live shows from a couple of years back was based on it.

it could do without the pizzicato craig armstrong bidniz.

NO way, the strings are excellent

blueski, Thursday, 19 July 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

I want to poll the first 4 UK Now albums. None were ever better than those 4.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Voted Sparks btw. GREAT song!

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

the oakey mix is very different, yea, but the '94 version on the '?' elpee (which was also the a-side, i think) is practically the same as the '87 version.

the strings on 'sly' are about half-and-half for me. i especially don't like the string coda. i always want MA to be a *bit* rougher than they are.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

"Stay" (obv.)

Tape Store, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 19 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

That Sparks song has one of the best lyrics I've ever heard in a pop song, but you'd expect that from them.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 July 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

That Sparks song has one of the best lyrics I've ever heard in a pop song

Not that it was particularly "pop" though, as in popular. Its highest UK chart position was number 32.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 20 July 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

blimey!

Mark G, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

wtf? lurkers be pollin.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Poll threads are always foregone conclusions cos of the in-depth debate they attract.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...
