Massively insightful documentary on her on C4 last night, Jacques Peretti's conclusion being, essentially, "Winehouse uses her disruptive personal life to fuel her songs". Quite a lot of "duty to her gift" type talk as well. Like I say, insightful.

I believe ex-Guardian Guide columnist Peretti produced some TV programmes for Guardian Guide columnist Charlie Brooker.

IIRC Peretti came out of the modern review mk2? He used to be pretty good, vv funny (a long time ago). Haven't read anything by him for years.

I suspect another case where hammering out a weekly column for years will wear down/use up even the best writer pretty quickly.

Have the tabloids ever been quite this obsessed with someone quite this fucked-up from the music world prior to Doherty? Like, waiting for them to die? I can't recall anything quite like this before, but that's probably because I'm not thinking hard enough and don't read tabloids. I remember then going gaga for Gallaghers jnr and snr in 1995-1998 or so, but neither Noel or Liam ever looked likely to drop dead of a smack overdose at any moment.

Argh, half of the problem with Winehouse is that people won't leave her alone, and their behaviour in a pack while pursuing her. Elastica story has ended happily for most of the group members, but I can assure you at the time Jus and Damon had pact not to be photographed together purely because paparazzi of the day wanted 'the shot' and they were constantly being hassled. Less media to dodge back then, though.
