If you're going to starve yourself in a desperate attempt at clinging onto your fame, at least wear your hair down. She looks like a spent match.

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:18 (eighteen years ago)

what do you play again?

Right-hand side only, obv.

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

She looks pretty awful, I admit. And her make-up is ugly too.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

I like looking at her. You stare at her when she's singing in her scowling way that there's so much going on behind those eyes.

Alba, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

Is she eating a rattle-snake in that first picture?

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:45 (eighteen years ago)

shaun ryder? more going on behind the eyes tho.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

Amy Winehouse >>>>>>>> 90% of other female singers.

only sophie ellis bextor can compete in stare-at-ability.

they're like picassos in a gallery full of renaissance artworks.

Hamildan, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

Kiss me, you toothless bastard.

moley, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

Oh dear christ, that bottom picture I hoped I'd never see again. Toothlessness would be an improvement over the Stonehenge thing he's got going on in his lower jaw.

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

haha

i like how he's got all those gin and tonics lined up in the first pic.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

i saw an article about this in the news of the world this morning

creme1, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Then = hott
Now = nott.

Why do lady pop stars always do this? Lauren Laverne was a lot finer when she had curves.

The Wayward Johnny B, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah even posh looked better when she had some puppy fat

sam500, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

Who really cares? Just listen to her music, looking is not necessary.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Why do lady pop stars always do this?

Yeah, Beth Ditto is just a shadow of her former self.

StanM, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

'pop' 'stars'.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

she's been on the front of heat oldboy

597, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Iggy Pop, loads of other men look far worse than Winehouse even now

Winehouse looks great in that 'Then' pic. on a facile note I just wish she'd cut half her hair off and ditch those fake lashes.

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

"a desperate attempt to clinging onto fame"? if you hadn't noticed her star is kinda on the rise dude.

Absolutely smoking in the "then" picture. Somebody order her a pizza.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

i would hit her "then," but then I have a meaty jewish gal fetish…

Veronica Moser, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

"her" = "it"

glad you changed this, was quite offensive before

blueski, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Is she a pop singer or a model? I don't give a flying fuck if she's attractive (and she is at least interesting looking, I think), and at the risk of being a predictable p.c. leftist, I DO think there's inherent sexism in the question.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

sexi as *all* hell in both those pics yeah i agree completely.

pisces, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Also, the thread-starter pic looks like a sneak shot taken outside her apartment - "WTF, why aren't you sexy when you go to get your newspaper in the morning?"

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

(or mail, from the looks of it)

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

she looks fine...and anyway, since when do we want our musicians to look "normal"?

henry s, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Take the bitches out and stop butt-plugging? You're right, my bad.

humansuit, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

humansuit, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Richard Wood Johnson, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

she's actually quite comely, in a back-alley sort of way...

henry s, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

she looks kinda fucked up! junkie muscles? hope there's no blow-out or breakdown or anything--i like her music, even though it's getting a little played out. then again maybe a strung-out-sounding winehouse is a good thing. STAY STRONG AMY

O RLY? X-POST

strgn, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

Clive James' take on her. And Snoop Dogg.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7381065.stm

And for once, the 'comments' afterwards are um, germaine. It takes what, seven or eight sets of comments until someone calls for the government to have her sectioned and/or classified D so the media cannot report on her or play her songs...

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

..

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:10 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, come the fuck on. It's not like I'm trying to rationalize her stupid behaviour for her, but... "a duty to her gift" ? On what grounds, exactly?

Turangalila, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)

Massively insightful documentary on her on C4 last night, Jacques Peretti's conclusion being, essentially, "Winehouse uses her disruptive personal life to fuel her songs". Quite a lot of "duty to her gift" type talk as well. Like I say, insightful.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

heh

Turangalila, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

Who actually _is_ Jacques Perreti? I assume he was big in the 90s or something, but all I remember him from is that meandering column about clubbing he used to write for the Guide.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

Who actually is Clive James these days morelike. When did his insightful funny foreigners TV series finish?

And as for all this "duty to her gift" stuff, since when was pop a Customs Office?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:25 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno who Peretti is, but he had a very, very dull voice.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

I believe ex-Guardian Guide columnist Peretti produced some TV programmes for Guardian Guide columnist Charlie Brooker.

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:30 (seventeen years ago)

IIRC Peretti came out of the modern review mk2? He used to be pretty good, vv funny (a long time ago). Haven't read anything by him for years.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:34 (seventeen years ago)

I suspect another case where hammering out a weekly column for years will wear down/use up even the best writer pretty quickly.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)

Blimey, the Modern Review. Didn't Boris write one or two things for that?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

I don't recall ever seeing him in it, but I only got the magazine format version of it.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

Have the tabloids ever been quite this obsessed with someone quite this fucked-up from the music world prior to Doherty? Like, waiting for them to die? I can't recall anything quite like this before, but that's probably because I'm not thinking hard enough and don't read tabloids. I remember then going gaga for Gallaghers jnr and snr in 1995-1998 or so, but neither Noel or Liam ever looked likely to drop dead of a smack overdose at any moment.

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:41 (seventeen years ago)

I can't remember anything this squalid and morbid before Doherty either.

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:42 (seventeen years ago)

He wrote for Dazed and Confused before that. Was Dan Ashcroft based on him a bit? I can't remember.

I used to like his clubbing column but his piss poor new series is the sort of thing he used to take the piss out of.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:43 (seventeen years ago)

Pre-Doherty peeps used to try to hide their use. No-one was supposed to know that Brett Anderson was on the skag etc. Docherty/Winehouse don't bother to hide their use (or barely) hence new dynamic.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

The Doherty obit is going to present major logistical problems for news programmes; "his hits included...um, and...er, there was that one where...erm..."

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:38 (seventeen years ago)

I think if Elastica had been ran through the tabloid mill in a similar way BITD, we might have seen a pretty similar scenario - they only really got away w/ it cos no-one cared about them much by the time they properly got their habits going

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

Cameraphones/vids help a lot as well. "here's a picture of a figure you can barely make out but it's WINEHOUSE smoking CRACK!"

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:52 (seventeen years ago)

Around 96/97, The Sun actually had a picture of Noel Gallagher eating a curry on page two or something, as if he was, I dunno, Jackie Onassis or someone. I think that was the day the music died.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 10:55 (seventeen years ago)

"Damon Albarn riding a bike"

I forget the punny headline.

Mark G, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

One more argument for the "The rolling "Amy Winehouse arrested for drugs again today" thread:

Singer Amy Winehouse has been arrested in connection with drug offences, her spokesman has said.

The 24-year-old is being questioned at a police station in east London, the spokesman added.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7388721.stm

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)

Argh, half of the problem with Winehouse is that people won't leave her alone, and their behaviour in a pack while pursuing her. Elastica story has ended happily for most of the group members, but I can assure you at the time Jus and Damon had pact not to be photographed together purely because paparazzi of the day wanted 'the shot' and they were constantly being hassled. Less media to dodge back then, though.

suzy, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

Elastica story has ended happily for most of the group members

Is Donna still happily born-again? She seemed content enough on that front.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

It wasn't that long ago, I saw something to that effect. So, I guess, yeah.
