Because inquiring minds want to know.

Ricky Martin?

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 July 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

Probably. Is La India playing Celia Cruz during the big Fania All Stars show?

I see from the IMDB cast list that Furio from The Sopranos will be playing Jerry Masucci.

Well, the guy is said to have been a crook.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 19 July 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

terrible movie.

j lo basically shoves everyone else off the screen. it's more about her girlfriend character than anyone else.

s1ocki, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

And of course, in real life, I don't even know anything about Hector Lavoe's girlfriend. It seems like misplace emphasis, if what you say is true. (I haven't seen it.) Why are messages being hidden when there are only seven of them? Weird.

i felt bad for marc anthony!

s1ocki, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

"Come on, Marc, let's make a movie about Hector Lavoe. It'll be a hoot!"

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

"your wife will push you out of every frame!"

s1ocki, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

The movie sounds pretty lame from what I'm reading in a salsa discussion group.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

sad, i'd like to see a good hector lavoe movie. hey r.s., are there some good movies/documentaries of that era?

Descarga is giving the soundtrack a pretty good review. I think Yomo Toro is on it, even if he is not portrayed in it.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Descarga gives everything a pretty good review (although I have to admit this one sounds a little more convincing than usual, but maybe they just worked on it more).

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Incidentally, this was the original official thread for El Cantante, although I like your thread title better:

Marc Anthony & J. Lo to star in film about Hector Lavoe

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Coming soon!"

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks. I don't know why I didn't just revive your thread. Anyway, here's a short thread on another board about Yomo Toro's instrument the cuatro

Now I hear people saying the movie is good, but it concentrates too much on his substance abuse.

Willie Colon speaks -- and is not impressed.

I can't decide whether to run out and see for myself or to hunker down with my Benny Moré box set until the storm blows over.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 4 August 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

At least Larry Harlow said something nice.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Saturday, 4 August 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah: $$$

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 4 August 2007 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

This is all pretty much inevitable. Apparently La India has gone off about El Cantante as well (although her salsa bona fides aren't exactly universally recognized).

I think the concern about showing Latinos as drug addicts is a bit mis-placed. Most people are not going to say, "Another Latino drug addict," they're going to say, "Another musician drug addict."

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 4 August 2007 13:28 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I went out and bought the CD (along with Sonora Ponceña's Explorando, as recommended in the other salsa thread). Will listen to it as soon as I get tired of the Miles Davis On The Corner Sessions box. So, um, look for my comments sometime in 2027.
