Doesn't seem to have his own thread? I know more about him than I do his actual music - where do I begin?
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)
I know, I want to hear the really bonkers stuff. I downloaded a pretty boring album that to my untrained ears just sounded like spanish world music-ey stuff.
― I know, right?, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)
which one was it? that way I'll know what to stay away from... I was looking for a copy of Grande Liquidacao for awhile but eventually gave up. The most readily available stuff seems to be those Brazil Classics comps but I dunno if I trust them...
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)
the brazil classics greatest hits is AMAZING.
as a taster, you could do a lot worse.

excellent intor.
― s1ocki, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)
yeah that's the one I was debating getting
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 20 July 2007 22:58 (eighteen years ago)
well, off to Dusty Groove I guess
Oh yeah, I downloaded a track off that and it was amazing (or at least that cover comes up on itunes when I play the amazing track.) Just dug out the one I don't like. Its called Se o Caso é Chorar. It's quite dull.

My 17-month old daughter loves that Tom Ze Brazil Classics cd. (So do I.)
― tabletopjoe, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)
I have that cd. It's good.
― admrl, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)
Last year's Estudando o Pagode is terrific, Shakey.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)
Last year's Estudando o Pagode is terrific, Shakey
i haven't heard that one yet, but Jogos de Amar is also superb
― outdoor_miner, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)
classic across the board except for perhaps "nave maria" (mid-80's) which suffers from some not-great production and rehashing of old tunes and motifs (more so than usual at least).
unless of course you don't like "spanish world music-y" stuff. good thing he's brazilian. and speaks portuguese
also he has a newer record out called Danç-Êh-Sá (Dança dos Herdeiros do Sacrifício)that is extremely good and the most experimental thing he has done in years, but has been widely ignored- didn't get the distribution or hep press for Estudiando o Pagode apparently. there is an extremely high concept behind it that, as having no grasp of portuguese, i don't understand at all but undoubtedly is completely insane
― Bangelo, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)
I wasn't referring to the language its in.
― I know, right?, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)
thx for the clarification
― Bangelo, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)
shakey. i have that Grande Liquidacao on cd. lemme know if you want to "borrow" it
― jaxon, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)
it's really good, but i wouldn't call it absolutely necessary. great songwriting, but doesn't have much of his experimental stuff.
― jaxon, Friday, 20 July 2007 23:43 (eighteen years ago)
oh, i knew we had a ze thread
Tom Zé S/D
this one is pretty fucking great

ya i have a few two-albs-on-one-cd that are amazing. estudando da samba (er... spelling?) is terrif.
― s1ocki, Saturday, 21 July 2007 00:29 (eighteen years ago)
Heh, the famous marble in an asshole cover. Cheeky!
I love all his stuff. I've never been able to find a copy of his self-titled second album from 1970, however. I think Dusty Groove had it for about a millisecond. Will Hermes wrote about Zé under the Tropicália entry of the SPIN Alternative Record Guide published in '95. I wonder how many people got turned onto him from that.
My favorites in rough order:
Estudando O Samba 75 Tom Zé [Grande Liquidação] 68 Fabrication Defect 98 Todos Os Olhos 73 Se O Caso É Chorar 72 Correio Da Estação Do Brás 78
― Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 21 July 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)
that's very specific judgments you're giving them.
― s1ocki, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)
right up there with Todos Os Olhos, its fantastic, dont really like the newer stuff ive heard
― chupacabras, Sunday, 22 July 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)
Jogos De Armar ( Crossword Puzzle ) is my fave later Zé record. I also quite like Studying Pagode and wrote about it when it came out. Studying Samba is another great one. The Byrne comp, the first one, is definitive, with translations included.

Has anyone seen the new doc that's playing at Lincoln Center?

man, bummed about missing that movie. it was at the SF Film fest in may and april http://fest07.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=37
anyone know if that's gonna make it to DVD?
― jaxon, Monday, 23 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)
The movie was great and very moving. It's out on DVD but I think only in Brazil.
So, looks like another new Ze record has come out mostly under the radar, though it didn't escape the all-seeing olhos of Dusty groove:

Looks like this time he's a student of bossa. It's a shame that so much of his work over the past 10 yrs or so has sort of slipped by, especially after the brief flash of luaka bop-instigated attention. looking forward to hearing this.

Hein?
― Thugocrat (PappaWheelie V), Wednesday, 12 November 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)
Estudando o Samba and The Hips of Tradition are two great options in the TZ canon. His latest is basically his songs interpreted by female brazilian singers.
― Vision, Wednesday, 12 November 2008 23:26 (seventeen years ago)
Holy shit was I wrong about Se o Caso é Chorar btw and apologies to anyone I led astray! I just spent the last hour trying to learn how to sing along to Menina, Amanhã de Manhã (O Sonho Voltou) which is kinda tiring because its insanely fast and in a language I don't understand a word of but its great to be able to sing along to that last bit that is the singaloniest singalong.

I'll never forget the day he was taking requests and my brother shouted 'FLIPERAMA!' and then he delivered a great version of this one.

This was fucking awesome. He sang from the NY Yellow Pages! He jumped off the stage (75!) and danced with women! He disassembled his guitar and used it as a percussion instrument/flute! He wrote a song that was based on the MTA "STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS". He wrote a jingle about his new vinyl boxset that he was signing in the lobby (line was huge and I opted out but he was hugging and kissing EVERYONE). He was generally rapturously received. Probably a top ten/twenty show; definitely one of the best things I've seen this year.
― generous doler out of lollies (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 July 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)
Wow. I like some of his recorded work but sometimes he's too out there for me. That would be a memorable gig no matter what I thought though.
I see in the NY Times that it's Brasil summerfest week in NYC
― curmudgeon, Friday, 22 July 2011 13:38 (fourteen years ago)
yeah, come join me in the park on sunday for Marcelo D2 and Pitty!
