Because it's time we do the UK edition. And because 1984 was a great year for music. (Another one, following 1981,1982 and 1983, all of which were ace)

And my vote for "Hold Me Now", which remains an excellent single!

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

now this one really is difficult.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 00:59 (eighteen years ago)

there are like 10, at least, amazingly good songs here and most of the rest are still pretty good.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

there are only two that i can't recall at all.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember thesw six:

More, More, More|Carmel
Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)|Julia & Company
I Gave You My Heart (Didn't I)|Hot Chocolate
Bird Of Paradise|Bird Of Paradise
The Politics Of Dancing|Reflex
Wishful Thinking|China Crisis

Tracey Ullman's My Guy is one of my favourite songs ever.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, what am I thinking? Of course I know that Hot Chocolate song.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

the politics of dancing.... the politics of moo-oo-oo-vin on.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

the politics of dancing.... the politics of oooh, feeling good.
You mean.

DavidM, Saturday, 21 July 2007 07:25 (eighteen years ago)

Breakin' Down (Sugar Samba)|Julia & Company

Oh shit, I didn't see this before voting. This song is awesome!

Eric H., Saturday, 21 July 2007 07:29 (eighteen years ago)

Take one vote away from Matthew Wilder.

Eric H., Saturday, 21 July 2007 07:30 (eighteen years ago)

Bird of Paradise was by Snowy White. This is one excellent compilation. There's no way I could just choose one.

Get Out Of Your Lazy Bed|Matt Bianco
More, More, More|Carmel
Only You|The Flying Pickets

Seems that hipster jazz actually made it out of The Face and into the charts for a while in 1984. Didn't last...

Matt #2, Saturday, 21 July 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

DavidM, i just downloaded this and we're both right, in fact. my lines follows on from yours. it's really good!

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 09:26 (eighteen years ago)

The Flying Pickets were hipster jazz?

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 10:28 (eighteen years ago)

Well, they were coming from a jazz vocal tradition I guess. OK, maybe they weren't hipster jazz, or even jazz.

Matt #2, Saturday, 21 July 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Relax! By miles and miles.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 21 July 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

What a terrible selection, there were some fascinating, exciting things happening in 1984 but not much of it was making it onto Now compilations.

Billy Dods, Saturday, 21 July 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)

they had big difficulty getting American hits on them back then

blueski, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Seems that hipster jazz actually made it out of The Face and into the charts for a while in 1984.

See also Everything But The Girl's excellent "Eden" album.

Flying Pickets' acapella carbon copy cover of a synthpop hit from 1982 had nothing to do with jazz though. (But fun it was - at least back then)

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I was there then. It wasn't fun.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Surely you know "More More More" Alba? Erm...unless it's a different "More More More" to the one that everyone surely knows.

Ronan, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

I think it is, Ronan.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

yeah ronan, you're thinking of the andea true connection's "more more more". i can remember the carmel track prety well.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

converseley, i have never heard the current number one. go figure.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

contenders:

Wouldn't It Be Good|Nik Kershaw
Break My Stride|Matthew Wilder
Relax|Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Here Comes The Rain Again|Eurythmics
What Difference Does It Make|The Smiths
The Politics Of Dancing|Reflex

i voted for the eurythmics track. "what difference dooes it make" is a better song but we've had enough smiths polls.

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

actually i should have voted for "relax"

jed_, Saturday, 21 July 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Relax, so it's taken care of.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 July 2007 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

'Michael Caine' for me, because 'What Difference Does It Make' gets a lot of other votes anyway. 'Relax' and '99 Luftballons' could have made it too.

zeus, Sunday, 22 July 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously again a lot of great songs, but I don't understand what's supposed to be so great about "99 Red Ballons"

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

but you don't understand the appeal of dancing either

blueski, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

Excellent top 5. I bought those 7" singles as a kid.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

And my vote for "Hold Me Now", which remains an excellent single!

Hold Me Now|The Thompson Twins 0

even Geir's own polls reject his opinions!

blueski, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. My vote must not have registered for some reason :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

I had a couple of Thompson Twins singles too.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)
