The flipside to the grunge poll I suppose. Have a feeling more people will be into this one. Also: better organized for your convenience.

Really odd that there's no Ride or Verve. I suppose AMG might have Ride under shoegaze. Also: Radiohead? Maybe "The Bends" (maybe), but after 10 years does anyone associate "OK Computer" with "Britpop"?

Of course this is very hard to pick: "Parklife," "Morning Glory", "Elastica", "The Stone Roses", "Different Class", are all obvious. But I'm also partial to Supergrass. Can't decide... agh.

MC, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I could vote for my homemade Auteurs best-of.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 21 July 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Should Linoleum be on there? Just asking. Haven't listened in a while, but I recall them being pretty good.

dlp9001, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

'Fuzzy Logic' for me. Runners-up were 'Parklife' and 'Barafundle'.

zeus, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:22 (eighteen years ago)

this is shit. radiohead, ride, stone roses, happy mondays, black grape, the verve, robbie williams, travis, texas, gay dad, primal scream, shack, sea horses were not britpop.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

...and Mansun were?

everything, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Also: Who knew these were Britpop?

Iggy Pop "Lust for Life" & "Nightclubbing"
Brian Eno "Deep Blue Day"
New Order "Temptation"
Lou Reed "Perfect Day"
Bedrock "For What You Dream Of"
Leftfield "A Final Hit"
Underworld "Born Slippy"

Learn something new every day I suppose...

MC, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

my list was not exhaustive, everything.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 21 July 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

Shack probably do count as britpop for HMS Fable anyway. Nothing else, though.

dlp9001, Saturday, 21 July 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

LEISURE? fuck off.

pisces, Saturday, 21 July 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I think "Britpop" just means "pop and rock from Britain" to many outside this country.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think "Britpop" just means "pop and rock from Britain" to many outside this country.

Then how does L.A. based Nancy Boy fit in?

MC, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

OK, perhaps a defition rooted in Wittgensteinian family-resemblance theory needs to be employed.

Or maybe AMG is just ass.

Alba, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Is Menswear's '26 Years' a cover version? it's alright, as is their cover of 'Public Image' (competent but totally redundant now if not then). they should've just done covers.

blueski, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

Saint Etienne? Primal Scream? Happy Mondays? Black Grape? The term seems a bit too wide here.

Voted for "OK Computer" which was an excellent album although not neccessarily Britpop.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think "Britpop" just means "pop and rock from Britain" to many outside this country.

Not to AMG, or there would have been lots more included in the list. They even stopped with "OK Computer" in the case of Radiohead.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 21 July 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

This list is the strangest definition of 'Britpop' I have ever seen

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 21 July 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Whether or not it's in on a technicality, I'd vote The La's album every time.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 July 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

Wibbling Rivalry?

Mark G, Sunday, 22 July 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Looked Wibbling Rivalry up on AMG. It's 15 minutes of the Gallagher Bros. bickering.

MC, Sunday, 22 July 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

This list is the strangest definition of 'Britpop' I have ever seen

Seems like they have classified it as "British indie from the 90s".

Ned, please explain! :)

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 22 July 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

what no Denim? the two best britpop albums ignored?

acrobat, Sunday, 22 July 2007 12:19 (eighteen years ago)

'denim on ice' is on itunes but not on compact disc.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 22 July 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

"The Holy Bible" is my favourite here, but I wouldn't call it Britpop. "I Should Coco" it is.

Duane Barry, Sunday, 22 July 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)

FOXBASE ALPHA

groovemaaan, Sunday, 22 July 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

voted for Different Class.

stephen, Sunday, 22 July 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

I am not at all surprised if a non-Britpop album, such as "Foxbase Alpha", "Giant Steps" or "Pills'n'Thrills...." wins this poll.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

Would you like it if Black Grape won? I think that's a very underrated album.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 22 July 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

'foxbase alpha' and 'giant steps' are more britpop than most of these records.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 22 July 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

Would you like it if Black Grape won? I think that's a very underrated album.

My guess is most of those votes will go to Happy Mondays instead.

But still, no. I like Black Grape better than Mondays, but both are lacking in terms of tunes when compared to the Britpop genre.

'foxbase alpha' and 'giant steps' are more britpop than most of these records.

Saint Etienne have considerably more in common with Pet Shop Boys and Prefab Sprout than they do with Pulp, Blur or Suede. I mean, I like Saint Etienne a lot (not as much as I like Prefab Sprout or PSB, that is), but Britpop they have never been. Same about Dubstar, which was built very much on the same musical base.

And "Giant Steps" is not a Britpop album - has more in common with shoegazing than with Britpop really. "Wake Up!" was a great Britpop album though, while "C'mon Kid" was back to shoegaze once more.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 July 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

Britpop they have never been

http://img.search.com/thumb/6/62/40682146_select_203300.jpg/180px-40682146_select_203300.jpg

canon, bitch.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 23 July 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

"So Tough" of course. St. Etienne were Britpop without the guitars.

daavid, Monday, 23 July 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I still count Saint Etienne as sophisti-pop more than Britpop. Nothing wrong with that, much as a love sophisti-pop.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 23 July 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I should have voted for "Wake Up" or "Parklife". They summarise a "best-possible" Britpop for me.

the next grozart, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

have voted, but not for mansun. they weren't really britpop, were they?

Just got offed, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

Way worse than the Grunge thread.

I voted for the Happy Mondays.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Anything but a britpop albums is going to win this!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

truly horrible list. I am voting for the first disc of sci-fi lullabies.

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

otherwise his n hers or radiator or holy bible.

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

never heard of "arnold"!

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

or eggman

admrl, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I ought to have voted for radiator given my well-professed love for it, but again, I just don't get that Britpop feeling from it.

I actually voted for 'Dog Man Star'. It's still my only Suede album; I just know that the others won't live up to it. It's absolutely fantastic.

Just got offed, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

Eggman is Sice Boo Radley's solo project. Quite nice really.

the next grozart, Thursday, 26 July 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Soooo much better than the grunge poll. I vote for OK Computer.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 26 July 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

There's at least 20 good-to-great albums on that list. There were maybe three on the grunge one.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 26 July 2007 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

Uh oh, Mr Snrub gives this poll a thumbs up.

admrl, Thursday, 26 July 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

Can we have a poll after this for the worst album on the list? My money would be on one of the OCS albums.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Most people here probably haven't even heard other OCS albums than "Moseley Shoals". Which is brilliant and one of the best albums of the entire Britpop era.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

No it wasn't.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, it was. Particularly "The Day We Caught The Train" and "You've Got It Bad" - both of them marvellous pop singles.

I have yet to see any kind of criticism towards OCS that isn't mainly about how they were "derivative", which is an irrelevant argument considering most of the best music of the past 20 years has been "derivative".

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

You don't have to make an argument. Ocean Colour Scene were shite. End of.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

ANGLO-FIGHT!!!!

MC, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

OCS were huge here. Bigger than Blur and Pulp and most of those bands. Second only to Oasis. The 3 times I saw Oasis bloody OCS were as support. I hated the fans as much as I hated the band too.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

ok, it's ON.

How's this: "The Manic Street Preachers are a bunch of whiny-ass titty baby poseurs, who wouldn't know a good riff if the headless corpse of Richey James showed up to beat 'em over the head with it, aight?"

Bring it bitches....

MC, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, they have a couple of good riffs despite being shite.

everything, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

the manics albums on this list are probably the best ones on it, but aren't britpop. Same with the Stone Roses and Radiohead albums. So I'm not voting for them.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, is that the best you can do everything?

How about "Ocean Colour Scene wouldn't know real soul if James Brown showed up to fuck 'em in the arse with it."

MC, Thursday, 26 July 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/amg/pop_albums/1/4/6/d143016c16t.jpg

everything, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Some good Britpop on that soundtrack as far as I can remember.

everything, Thursday, 26 July 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

How about "Ocean Colour Scene wouldn't know real soul if James Brown showed up to fuck 'em in the arse with it."

No problem. Their soul is better, but generally their best material was always their most Beatles-influenced and least R&B influenced.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

And ILM's "Second Coming" madness doesn't seem to stop. Just one good song ("Ten Storey Lovesong") doesn't make a good album obv.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

OMG!!! You mean, OTHER PEOPLE like Second Coming??! I'm not alone here??!?!

Stevie D, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

Plenty of defenders here (and haters too)

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

from the beginning this poll was just RONG

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

Texas: Greatest Hits 2

lols

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

2 votes that is

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

The Stone Roses: The Stone Roses 4
Oasis: (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? 3
Primal Scream: Screamadelica 0

(edited to emphasise rongness)

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Screamadelica =/= britpop. It's the best BRITPOP album.

Stevie D, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ocean Colour Scene: Moseley Shoals 0
Ocean Colour Scene: One From the Modern 0
Ocean Colour Scene: B-Sides: Seasides & Freerides 0

I guess it's not all bad

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

xp yeah well that's why i didn't vote for radiohead or the manics but ok computer still got 4 votes - and how about

Shampoo: We Are Shampoo 3

ledge, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

I could only vote for one Manics album :( But seriously, channel the hatred toward OCS. They suck

Morley Timmons, Thursday, 26 July 2007 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, either my grasp of the Britpop canon is really terrible or this poll's results are somewhat bizarre.

musically, Friday, 27 July 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

I suppose the second coming did come out after definitely maybe and parklife therefore part of that era at least.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 27 July 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)

(I thought mine would be the only vote for it hehe)

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 27 July 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

IT IS A FIX

furthermore, 'Different Class' is (by a stretch) Pulp's worst later-period album.

Just got offed, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

What do we think of 'We Love Life'? I fuckin adore it. Again, though, I seem to be alone.

Stevie D, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

we love life >>>> different class

Stevie D, Friday, 27 July 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

this poll's results are somewhat bizarre

OTM. This is really fucking weird.

MC, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

we love life is their best album, closely followed by his'n'hers

Just got offed, Friday, 27 July 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

I thought Blur - Parklife would have done better.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 27 July 2007 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

only one of the top five is really britpop.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 27 July 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore

Their four Island albums are all great though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore > Different Class > His'n'Hers > We Love Life > This Is Hardcore >

..... makes jack a dull boy.

i know it's what happens here but fighting over which is the best pulp album when they're really all pretty great seems somewhat pointless. i would have voted for different class simply because it was the first proper album i consciously bought and paid for with my own head and money. but i love this is hardcore too. and the rest.

Uptoeleven, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:25 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously the first three <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< the next four.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

The Stone Roses: Second Coming 16
The Stone Roses: The Stone Roses 4

lol ilm contrariness

DavidM, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

i think kerr's been up to tricks, myself. he's probably convinced a load of lurkers to vote second coming via MSN. he has form in that regard. :p

Just got offed, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

No need, Louis. Have a look at that stone roses thread that's on the new answers page just now. Plenty of fans there.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

well in that case, it was just bad luck that this thread came up just as second coming was in everyone's consciousness!

Just got offed, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure it had an effect yes.
Critically Reviled Albums Due A Re-evaluation : Stone Roses - Second Coming you know you want to join in

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 27 July 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

We Love Life is my favorite Pulp album, but the big four are all fantastic.

stephen, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

hahahah oh man these results

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Stone Roses" is obv. a way better album than "Second Coming". I mean, "Stone Roses" has roughly as many bad songs on it as "Second Coming" has good ones.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

ten years pass...

what were you guys thinking??

niels, Saturday, 24 March 2018 09:12 (seven years ago)
