I am just short of being completely unobjective about the output of Robyn Hitchcock and Andy Partridge. I want every note they've ever played and, yes, I even like Andy's laugh track outtake from the Fuzzy Warbles series.
While both have produced just one album that I consider weak (Andy - Wasp Star, Robyn - Luxor) I find it difficult to cast aspersions over their output.
I used to feel this way about Mark Burgess but years of mediocre work has soured me, and yet I'll still pick up his Black Swan Lane project next month.
What about you lot?

haha Burgess came to mind for me too, but I haven't heard enough of his recent work

also "Miracles and Wonders" kind of soiled the Chameleons' otherwise spotless record for me

I have a hard time being objective about fuck an objectivity.

I think I agree with The Reverand, assuming his point, shorn of profanity, is that objectivity doesn't exist / is pointless as a goal, etc.

More 'r less.

At least not when it comes to taste in music/art.

(Not to get all solipsistic.)

We do agree, then.

I think it tends to be stuff that you got into when you were younger, and which became a sort of soundtrack to a certain period of your life. I'm not sure if I have any artists, but there are certainly albums that I've lost all objectivity over.

I asked this question knowing full well that "I like what I like" is a truism but was curious if smart, well-listened ILMers found that they had some level of objectivity for most artists but found a handful that they were so ga-ga over they simply couldn't bring themselves to pan any of their work even though they know in their hearts that it's second or third tier.

To me it's more difficult to be objective about things you. I am sure that among the tons of music (including entire genres) I couldn't care less about, there are truly wonderful things. I couldn't possibly be objective about, say, Led Zeppelin if it's entire output bores me to tears. On the other hand, if my absolute favorite act makes something that's largely regarded as crap, I'd probably think it's crap too.

To me it's more difficult to be objective about things you dislike.

I think the objective/subjective distinction is a bad move because it doesn't get you very far, especially when people have no use for one half of the distinction. I don't think you can love some music too much to be able to make interesting judgements/comments or whatever about it; the more interest you take in something, the more interesting yr ideas about it are. People aren't always interested in music they love though, you can just sit pretty and let the music do all the work.
I don't mean taking an interest as the same thing as what I imagine people think of when they talk about "being objective about x", cos that always pays attention to certain features and places the song in a certain context which people think of as "the objective context" in which you can take it apart/compare it. That's like an external interest, setting it apart and studying it, but I'm more about being interested in the song kind of as something you identify with, look at it from inside.

I love Embrace, but I'm fiercely critical about an awful lot of their music, because an awful lot of it sucks. That's beyond subjective or objective; it's just a long, involved relationship with a band's work.
