i am in a rut. i need some new music that's not steely dan or techno, the two things ive been listening to the most lately. i need something disco inferno-y, noisy experimental pop. the sunny day in glasgow record is doing it for me; can yall recommend some good noise pop for a bro? something where the noise isn't just guitar feedback

flying saucer attack

admrl, Monday, 23 July 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, no guitar feedback in either of those!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

Off the top of my head, try something from the TYPE catalogue? Maybe this

sorry lemme be a little more specific: i have a ton of MBV, JAMC, AR Kane, the whole early bit ... i am trawling maybe for some more overlooked stuff. what was that african american shoegaze band? veldt or something? and about the guitar feedback comment, i like MBV cause their noise isn't just feedback, unlike, say, JAMC. so heavily treated guitars are great, really.

The Veldt was good, but hardly noisy.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 23 July 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

You should listen to the last song on Pharoah Sanders's Message From Home (I think) CD. The song is called "Country Mile" and it's poppy and noisy, and all the noise comes from a skronking saxophone.

what was that african american shoegaze band? veldt or something?

Yup. There is a separate Veldt as well on Myspace now, so avoid imitations. (The 'real' Veldt are now known as Apollo Heights.)

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

I do. Great stuff! And I am so not surprised you love the Angelic Process, Scott! :-) I am pleased to see they're getting some big attention all of a sudden -- well deserved.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

that one ANLLF album is still my fave american stereolab/mbv ripoff. Turning Into Small. i always meant to try some of their other albums, but i never did.

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

They're all pretty good -- two albums and a singles/rarities comp.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway there's all the electronicgaze out there now so to answer the original question, dig up all that Fennesz and Schnauss and etc.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Deerhunter, maybe?

quickbrownfox, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

hey thanks again scott ... anyone know of stuff like this, but melded with electronics?

xpost yeah thanks ned i have a bnubunch of fennesz and just got some oren ambarchi, but i am going rockist on this one and looking for the mixed with the songs; what really floated by boat was that david sylvian/fennesz disc

xxpost jeez yeah i really wanted to like that deerhunter album ...

uptown churl, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

christ, 'the noise mixed with the songs'

uptown churl, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

i keep looking at the deerhunter stuff at the record store. is it no good?

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

oren too! i keep staring at that grapes from the estate vinyl and not knowing whether i want to make the plunge.

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

I've been enjoying the new Deerhunter. I think they appeal to me for the same reasons as MBV, which is why I recommended them. They use a lot of DigiDelay, to good effect.

quickbrownfox, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

to my ears, neither the songs nor the textures really distinguished themselves to me. the flourescent grey ep had a song on it i liked though maybe you could start there?

xxpost i have suspension and stacte motor, and ... uh, maybe grapes is better? i havent listened to them much but it sure is droney

basically, what i am looking for is somethinglike markus popp remixing fleetwood mac

gah xpost

I'm thinking of off-the-beaten-path stuff:

Experimental Aircraft's last album "Love For the Last Time" is often pretty stellar...shoegaze by way of Texas. If downloading, the track to check is "Symphony."

The early Smashing Orange collection "1991" that came out not long ago is also pretty good: US shoegaze imitators from back in the day who later annoyed lots of people when they turned into biker rockers or something like that. I actually like their subsequent "Glass Bead Game" CD quite a bit, but most people don't seem to.

dlp9001, Monday, 23 July 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

nb just because i keep saying 'oh yeah um no' i still really appreicate all yalls suggestions! thanks!

checking out smashing orange as we speak ...
