Best Doom Metal Band

Time for a proper poll. Doom METAL only, so don't complain about fucking Earth, Eyehategod or Type O, go set up a stonerdroner/post-hardcore poll for that. And Sabbath excluded because they'd obviously win due to too many casual voters (and too borderline/proto anyway).

And vote for the doom incarnations of Katatonia, Paradise Lost, The Gathering and Anathema - not for the alternative rock ones.

Siegbran, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

i can't even remember if i've ever heard celestial season. didn't they sound like my dying bride?

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Gathering, because I worked "Liberty Bell" into my Harry Potter DJ set at Borders this weekend! Also because I've never heard the others.

dr. phil, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

pls read txt thx

Siegbran, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Where's Obsessed?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'll go for Electric Wizard as I feel they were the most consistent out of all the bands there that I like.
Honourable mentions though to
Solitude Aeternus
Candlemass
Saint Vitus
Trouble
Pentagram

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

close call between candlemass and esoteric for me... and for entirely different reasons, obv.

original bgm, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

St Vitus edge it over Pentagram and Witchfinder General. Err, can't say I've really heard most of the rest though.

Matt #2, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

I went for Electric Wizard although I like Saint Vitus a lot too. I'm probably more into the stonerdroner/post-hardcore stuff than this though.

No Khanate?

Colonel Poo, Monday, 23 July 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Anal Voyage? Naughty Satan? Colon Holocaust? Bastard Orphanage? Evil Brunch?

This list isn't very comprehensive at all.

Frogman Henry, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

winter. maybe i'll change my mind and choose thergothon or skepticism after i post this. nah. it's winter.

half of those other bands are just dudes that want to sound like dream theater but don't have the chops!!!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

DING DING DING

And Winter is the right answer!

Siegbran, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Is Sleep not Doom Metal?

Bill Magill, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

i already knew you were voting for winter. you and el sabor are classy like that. i'm not as classy though and might vote for electric wizard. or funeral. i can't pick. maybe there should be a seperate funeral doom thread? probably to late for that.

x-post

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

I would've voted Sleep if they had been in there.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

where is the love for evoken? or morgion? not that i would vote for them, but still...

scott seward, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

In a funeral doom poll, Thergothon, Skepticism or Funeral would probably win anyway. Sleep are too stoner, had to draw the line somewhere, sorry dudes.

Yeah, Evoken, Morgion, Saturnus, Septic Flesh, Nightfall, Orphaned Land, Bethlehem, Nortt, Novembers Doom, Sadness, Dusk, Abysmal, Lake Of Tears...all fine bands, can't see many people voting for them though.

Siegbran, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

What a great name for a band: Abysmal

Bill Magill, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

Electric Wizard also border the Doom/Stoner line but they were included.
A seperate stoner poll could be done, but really Kyuss would/should walk that.
Drone/Doom would be more interesting perhaps excepy Sunn o)))/Earth or Boris would win. Eyehategod would win a sludge poll. Neurosis or Isis would surely win a "post-metal" poll. (with 300 posts complaining about the term).
What genre would The Melvins be in?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Grunge, apparently.

Matt #2, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

They deserve a better poll than that amg grunge one.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 23 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

As others... I would vote Sleep.

Instead it's a tie(as always) between diSEMBOWELMENT and Thergothon.

MRZBW, Monday, 23 July 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

Nice to see Celestial Season mentioned in the list. They were one of the better bands from The Netherlands in the nineties. They started doomy but ended up playing more alternative stuff on their last records.

Still voted for the Gathering though.

Marty Innerlogic, Monday, 23 July 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

mdb

trouble, cathedral and paradise lost would follow, but not really be in contention

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

and katatonia in its current incarnation is certainly not alternative rock. though granted, it's not doom either!

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:44 (eighteen years ago)

This is way too hard.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:44 (eighteen years ago)

Anathema for me. Each and every of their releases is a masterpiece.

no-nonsense, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 06:39 (eighteen years ago)

Khanate. Oh wait..

rockapads, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 07:28 (eighteen years ago)

Since Coffins wasn't an option, I went with Winter. Is that disc ever getting reissued?

fukasaku tollbooth, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

you mean "again?"

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

I like lots of these bands -- way more than on most polls like this -- but I object to all the silly hair-splitting about what constitutes "real" "doom-metal." So, to make life easier for me, I'm not gonna vote, I don't think.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.fanggrebelski.com/images/Father%20Ted/mrs_doyle_1.jpg

Oh go on go on go on..

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Saturday, 28 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Did Chuck vote in the end? The hair-splitting's all part of the fun!

Matt #2, Saturday, 28 July 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, what the hell. Went with Electric Wizard, though I could easily have voted for 10 other bands (including the Gathering, who might be my favorite band on the list, though I'll concede their "doom" stuff might not be why. Not that I'm exactly sure which stuff that is.)

xhuxk, Saturday, 28 July 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Electric Wizard are making a new album just now. Who knows when it will be out though.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 28 July 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

electric wizard are the only band on that list that features one of my best friends from high school as a member. plus, they rule. so i voted for them.

scott seward, Sunday, 29 July 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

the wiz gets my vote.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 29 July 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

Gotta go with Witchfinder General. Naked women on the cover of all your (studio) LPs = my favorite band. Trouble, The Gathering and Cathedral each had a good shot at my vote as well, though.

Handsome Dan, Sunday, 29 July 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry but I don't think this clip should be confined to Alex In NYC's blog, though I'm unsure exactly where it belongs here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FkTORyXc6g

Bimble, Sunday, 29 July 2007 07:40 (eighteen years ago)

I hope the new Electric Wizard is out soon.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 July 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

i cant take this poll seriously without sleep on the list. it'd be like voting for jolly ranchers on a poll that left out watermelon as an option.

and fuck that, sirs!

buyabiznatch, Sunday, 29 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

also, since i hold the theory that showing > telling, the bands left off this list (the so called stonerdroner bands err whatever) have a tendency to better create the morbid presentiment of impending doom better with their music than the bands on this list that i've heard. and their heavily distorted guitars do sort of remind me of metal....

....doom....metal....hmmmmmm

buyabiznatch, Sunday, 29 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

to be honest, i don't even really think of electric wizard as a "metal" band. stonerhardrockpunkdoom is more like it. but we all have our way of defining things.

scott seward, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

and i voted for them anyway. even though i like a ton of bands up there. and some up there are more "metal".

scott seward, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

plus, i couldn't follow siegbran's advice and divorce the later output of bands like anathema and gathering/katatatonia from my thinking. i just don't think of them as doom even though they have all made doom.

scott seward, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

If they can be on this poll then the stoner bands should be on it.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 July 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

I suspect I like Skepticism best, but I haven't listened to them in a long time. Cathedral, on the other hand, are in routinely play, so that's who I took.

J0hn D., Sunday, 29 July 2007 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn have you heard the Chrome Hoof album? It's Leo Smee from Cathedral.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 July 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

EW (vinyl) re-issues up for pre-order on Rise Above

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 29 July 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Voted just in time! Instant gratification: "So three of us voted for Trouble."

Myonga Vön Bontee, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

now i kinda feel bad that i didn't vote for funeral. so sad. but then they are really sad, so maybe no votes is best.

scott seward, Monday, 30 July 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

Were the 4 votes for The Gathering really for their doom period?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 30 July 2007 07:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm shocked by the lack of appreciation for classic Anathema. Bask in the utter heaviness of their Pentecost III era.

no-nonsense, Monday, 30 July 2007 08:48 (eighteen years ago)

vis a vis the gathering, are we counting mandylion as doom?

Charlie Howard, Monday, 30 July 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

YOB.

novaheat, Monday, 30 July 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Good call, YOB should've been there too.

How Saint Vitus did not win is a crime - can't believe it - Electric Wizard - sheesh - guess I'll have to give them a re-listen.

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 30 July 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

if winter weren't on the poll i might've gone for vitus. just for the first album, though.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

:-(

saxomophone, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 20:20 (eighteen years ago)

High school me might have voted for Paradise Lost.

I went to the metal record store over the weekend to sell a bunch of high school cd's (made $60!) and had this perverse urge to buy a My Dying Bride cd.

Jordan, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

you should probably buy one, jordan. it may just depress the hell out of you. they're too dark for just about all of my friends. but, you used to dig paradise lost in high school! you're definitely up to the task, i'm sure!

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 07:44 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I wonder when those remasters that i pre-ordered will come.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 16 August 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Could forgive the omission of Obsessed, 'cuz St. Vitus is on there, but exclusion of Sleep is criminal. Dopesmoker may belong more to the stonerdrone crowd, but Holy Mountain is the essence of doom. Impeccable Sabbath pedigree. Better than Dopethrone or Come My Fanatics.

Bob Standard, Friday, 17 August 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

And is available again on vinyl!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 17 August 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

I did get the reissues btw and I can't wait for the new album.

Also I recommend the Monarch/Grey Daturas split. That's crushing and great.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 4 October 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

All the Monarch I have is rad and they were some of the nicest band type people I've met to boot

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 4 October 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

The 2xcd debut album that was OOP has been repressed too. I recommend that to everyone.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 4 October 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

YOB vinyl coming soon!

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 1 February 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Candlemass should have won this easily. What's wrong with people?

Nate Carson, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

Nah the top 2 is fine by me

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

Saint Vitus?
I am old and drunk,
THE ST vitus? the SST band?

Help the aged

Fer Ark, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, that's the same Saint Vitus. Doom pioneers.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 2 February 2008 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

Saint Vitus are awesome. Did we ever have a best saint vitus album poll?

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 18:54 (seventeen years ago)

This poll was a bloody disgrace

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

I cant complain about the top 2

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

This poll was a bloody disgrace

fucking cosign. I have love for Electric Wizard don't get me wrong, but better than St. Vitus, Pentagram, Cathedral, or Skepticism? Please.

J0hn D., Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

Eric has left Trouble btw. REPLACED BY KORY CLARKE. I love Warrior Soul, but this isnt going to last very long haha.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Eric Wagner out of Trouble, Kory Clarke steps in

Amidst many rumors it has been announced earlier today that "KORY CLARKE", of "WARRIOR SOUL" will be the new front man effective immediately.

The news comes as the band returns to their Chicago homes following a successful European Tour.

"Trouble" founder & guitarist, "RICK WARTELL" explains "IT WAS A MUTUAL AGREEMENT, YOU NEED TO FOLLOW YOUR HEART IN THIS BUSINESS AND IF YOU ARE NOT INTO IT 100% THEN IT IS TIME TO MOVE ON. WE ALL FELT IT WAS THE BEST THING FOR ALL PARTIES INVOLVED.
THERE ARE NO HARD FEELINGS. IM SURE ERIC WILL CONTINUE MAKING MUSIC AND WE WISH HIM THE BEST."

"RICK WARTELL" went on to say "WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO HAVE KORY STEP IN AND TAKE OVER THE VOCALS FOR TROUBLE. HE'S BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE FRONTMEN IN THIS INDUSTRY FOR MANY YEARS. HE WILL ADD A NEW DEMENTION THAT WE CAN USE. IT'S NOT LIKE WE JUST PICKED OUT SOME GUY TO FILL IN, THIS IS ONE OF ROCKS MOST DYNAMIC AND CREATIVE FRONTMEN IN THE INDUSTRY.
I KNOW THAT WHEN TROUBLE FANS GET A TASTE OF WHAT KORY DOES, THEY WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN KORY WITH WARRIOR SOUL ALREADY KNOWS WHAT TO EXPECT, AND IT'S AWESOME."

TO CATCH A EARLY GLIMPSE OF THE NEW LINEUP, SIGN UP FOR THE TROUBLE LIVE WEBCAST, JULY 11, 2008 (FROM, (Click here to open link) ) AND SEE FOR YOURSELF FROM THE PRIVACY OF YOUR OWN COMPUTER.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:29 (seventeen years ago)

The thing about Electric Wizard, and Dopethrone in particular, is that it's like doom for people who aren't really all that into doom--it's a weird scuzzy-doom-rock-punk hybrid, not unlike the Melvins I guess. I guess that ought to disqualify Wizard from the running.

telepathy_rock!, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

Wrong

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

It's what makes E-Wiz great, and why they took the poll. Like Sabbath and Sleep, E-Wiz are doom for people who like music more than the genre. (Admit this is equally true of some of the lesser-knowns mentioned, but they're, you know, lesser known.)

contenderizer, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Just to clarify, I am by no means a doom aficionado. I love Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sabbath, etc. but haven't delved too far beyond that, aside from the occasional stoner/weird hybrid band like Boris or Acid King or what have you. If there's one thing I love it's heavy molten riffing.I wasn't judging EW's quality when I said they should be disqualified, it's just that they're not "straight" doom, whatever that means.

telepathy_rock!, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

eh I am being pretty silly here

telepathy_rock!, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

Acid King. Yeah. "Carve the Five" just totally rules.

contenderizer, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

Plus being silly is OK.

contenderizer, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

It'd be hard to think of a worse match for Trouble than Kory Clarke. You can just hear the air going out of the band like a dieing balloon.

I suppose this is proof Dirty Rig didn't do so hot. And I liked about half of it, at least.

Gorge, Saturday, 10 May 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

doom metal is fucking lame

chaki, Saturday, 10 May 2008 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

good one

contenderizer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

i "hope" the next "trouble" album featuring "kory clarke" has a lot of "superfluous" quotes.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 11 May 2008 09:32 (seventeen years ago)

also, if you scroll down on the results until you can't see "electric wizard" anymore this poll makes more sense.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Sunday, 11 May 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't read the thread to see if this has been addressed, but Eyehategod is far closer to doom metal than Electric fucking Wizard for Christ's sake.

Reatards Unite, Sunday, 11 May 2008 12:40 (seventeen years ago)

i "hope" the next "trouble" album featuring "kory clarke" has a lot of "superfluous" quotes

That's about as likely as you not being easily irritated by me. Haw!

Gorge, Sunday, 11 May 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't read the thread to see if this has been addressed, but Eyehategod is far closer to doom metal than Electric fucking Wizard for Christ's sake.
Both children of Sabbath, both slow low & raspy, so both DOOM. Fucking deal. Some people wanna call Eyehategod "sludge" or some shit, I dunno why. Anyway, speaking of silly ('cuz I was), I'm listening to Yob, and man that guy sings silly. Like it though. Best doom band not to appear on this list that isn't, like Grief, Burning Witch, the Obsessed, Eyehategod, Corrupted or Sleep. And did I say fuck this poll? But yeah, fuck this poll.

contenderizer, Sunday, 11 May 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)
