tell me...
i had to review Marcus Intalex's FabricLive 35 for a magazine, and while i think i did a good job reviewing it, it made me want to find out more. i talked to a head the other night a bit, but he was so deep into it that we were sort of speaking separate languages.
so, if i like Commix, Nu:Tone, and Calibre (and generally more DETROITy d'n'b), what else would i like?

drum & bass died in 1998 IMO

how the tables have turned ;)

cmon, give me a break. intalex lists detroit techno as a major influence (and you can HEAR IT), and i think it might just be this mix, which i think is pretty excellent. it's fantastic dub samples and orlando voorn/fix style beats, with shitloads of hallucination. and some really excellent 'slow' burners thrown in here and there. really striking shit.
anyway, please. just tell me what is the best drumnbass, evah. like maybe a top 3.

Essential drum n bass in the 21st century (SEEK only)

use the search function, tons of list threadz on the subject
My favourite rhythmically straightforward, Detroit-ish D&B track is Lexis's "Destination Unknown", which sounds a bit like Martin Buttrich.

macallan, i'm not a noob. i just want something in a certain vein.
― the table is the table, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)
and also thx tim.
(that thread you mentioned, macallan, is pretty good. but i don't know how to parse a lot of it-- i am coming to drumnbass after disliking and avoiding it for years, so a list thread is great, but a bit much for me at this juncture)

Seriously, please shut up.

Intalex is always "Detroit-y" - it's not just this mix. Look for his mix from Junglodium in Cleveland 2001 - you can get in slsk - it's a stormer. Also look for his Soul:ution mix CD from 2003 - very nice but maybe a little "liquid" for some tastes.
His label, Soul:R, brought out a good compilation recently called Dat:Music ( I guess he likes colons )which features this style heavily.
For artists, try stuff by Martyn, Break ( his track "Let it Happen" just out on promo after the usual ridiculous time on dubplate is astounding) Lynx, Sabre, ALIX FUCKING PEREZ (HOT!!!), Digital and Spirit. Get the MP3s off slsk then buy the vinyl if you approve.
D'n'b has always fed off Detroit - people like Wax Doctor would cite UR as a major influence, Bukem is a big fan of Carl Craig and all the older skool DJs like Fabio would always play stuff by Tronik House, Reese Project in days gone by.
To say a whole genre "died" at specific point in time is a nonsense - if by "died" people mean lost critical concensus then so be it - but you start to sound like the old taxi driver I always get landed with who won't listen to anything made after 1974...

okay, died is a bit strong. it just ceased inspire me in any way after about 98. i was listening to an old grooverider essential mix the other day which is absolutely STORMING! i've never heard any other mix better it since.
good to hear d&b is still popular though.

I will never forget how I UPSTAGED the mighty Grooverider! Well somehow: opened for him, whipped the crowd into maybe not a frenzy but surely did my job and then some- he shows up, moody as fuck, then proceeds to meticulously clear the dancefloor. If he could have used robot arms to play and turned his skull backwards to avoid seeing the audience, both things he obviously would have preferred that night, it wouldn't have been worse. Nevertheless I WIN

I have to agree that I tuned out D&B in '97...in fact, the only new D&B thing I have purchased since then is the new Rufige Cru, and only because I ahd heard is was a "welcome return to form"...oh wait, I also bought that Nookie full-length back in 2000, but even that seemed a bit lifeless compared to the older stuff...anyhoo, glad to see that people still get excited about this genre, and I hold out hope that I will find my way back to it...

nice work blunt. some of those guys got pretty complacent back in the day i'm sure (or whenever it was you upstaged 'rider').
― sam500, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)
Did this take place at a Students' Union by any chance? I remember a lot of dnb DJs doing beyond half-arsed sets at student shitholes all over the Home Counties in the late 90s.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)
that was about 10 years ago, Loft club in Lausanne/Switz. I quit playing d&b in mid '98. Also glad to hear it's still 'happening' these days. When I sell my classics-laden collection there'll be takers!
― blunt, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)
And when I get around to skimming it again I'll have some actual contributions for this thread (sorry)!
― blunt, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)
I want to hear from someone who thinks that drum & bass died in 2001 or something similar.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)
this is from 2001 and features a derrick may monologue (from a japanese techno docu which i posted to the florid techno thread). it also has a great intalex remix on it and lots of other hits from that period and earlier. all of the db dnb mixes are worth checking. he has lots of fans on ilm mainly for his hardcore mixes which are undisputed classics. the dnb mixes he did should not be overlooked though. i rate this one, too.
― tricky, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)
i still have both of those. i liked them but haven't listened in a long time.
― sleep, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)
wow, this is great. !! i'm going slskin. (and buying stuff, too. i'm pretty good now about buying music, which sadly was not the case a while back).
― the table is the table, Thursday, 26 July 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)
It did - but only on a temporary basis.
It resurrected itself ( largely through the work of guys like Marcus Intalex) at some point in 2003 and has been on a roll since...

I like a lot of recent-ish Equinox, Macc, Fracture & Neptune, Paradox type stuff. I'm not that deep into it, I just like a lot of scattered tracks, so I don't know if it's similar to what you're looking for or not.
