TS: Madonna vs. Morrissey

I'm using this story as an excuse to start this thread. I think it's a good one since they've both done lots of brilliant stuff and lots of crap. As for myself, I stopped caring about Madonna around '86, and for Morrissey at around '95, so I guess I'm gonna go with El Moz. Opinions?

daavid, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

Stupid link doesn't seem to work, dammit. Here we go again:

daavid, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Morrissey's always had this bitchy side to him where he degrades himself by making fun of, I dunno, Republica, or Gay Dad, or similar...I guess once a fanzine writer, always...but it's curious, no?

paulhw, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 03:41 (eighteen years ago)

“What kind of a person could even call up such imagery and words?”

Obviously, Madonna's people aren't familar with La Mozza.

King Boy Pato, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 08:35 (eighteen years ago)

How can someone so young sing words so sad?

The Wayward Johnny B, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously, Madonna's people aren't familar with La Mozza.

this reflects v well on them

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 10:06 (eighteen years ago)

Morrissey all the way

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

since Madge fails to zing but plays the "people are being hateful omg" card, Moz wins

J0hn D., Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm kind of on Pato's side here, plus I'm envious that Madge's rep has obviously never heard "Bengali In Platforms".

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

While performing at a PETA benefit show in Norfolk, Virginia, July 9, he dissed, “I wouldn’t be surprised if she made that African boy she adopted into and a coat and wore him for 15 minutes, then threw it away,” presumably blasting the trendy singer for hopping on the Angelina bandwagon by adopting 21-month old David Banda from Malawi last year.

(guilty lolz tho)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

(mostly at the copy editor; "into and a coat" lol)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Madonna, Madonna
oh shelve your Anglophile plans
and understand that life is hard enough when you belong here

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

since Madge fails to zing but plays the "people are being hateful omg" card, Moz wins

morrissey also fails to zing. madge rises above it.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

self-parodies off this thread

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

"rising above it" = "sounding like a rich old lady"

J0hn D., Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

I mean c'mon lex Madonna could piss off a balcony and you'd pronounce it groundbreaking work

J0hn D., Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

rich old ladies >>>> crotchety old men

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

oh you don't need to act like morrissey to prove you're on his side

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

how does one "rise above" being called out by an animal-rights activist for wearing fur and playing at a PETA event

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

MANfur

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

that's not what he said though

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Morrissey just wants Madonna to take his man-fur for a ride

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

xpost that was the point of his ire dude

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

I think making a joke about skinning children at a PETA event isn't particularly clever unless it's in reference to yourself.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

oh i dunno i thought it was ok

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

i will defend to the death, for the right of one rich person to say a bitchy thing about another person

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

actually, is it ok if i change my mind?

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

wait never mind she didn't play at the PETA thing, I got confused

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

i forgot to put rich person, instead of person, for the 2nd person.

these people have the advantage, as they hire people to write for them. i can't afford to do that:/

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

Morrissey may have the edge over Madonna on zings but there is still the swimsuit round

blueski, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

2-0 to morrissey?

i have faith that madonna can come back from this in the 2nd half, still

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Madonna's gonna kick his ass in the Inexplicable Attempt At English Accent round

J0hn D., Tuesday, 24 July 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

"rising above it" = "sounding like a rich old lady"

taking sides: rich old men vs rich old ladies

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I think we're just disappointed Madonna didn't come back with some sort of snap about vegetarianism or moping or Latino youths.

Hm, come to think of it, the latter is an obsession they have in common.

Erroneous Botch, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone ever seen Morrissey and Madonna in the same room at the same time??? Hmmm....

HI DERE, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

They're the last of the famous international....

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

boy toys

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

that's a pretty funny line i thought.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder if Mozzarella thinks the same of his meat-eating or animal-research-supporting fans.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure he does. Why would that make any difference?

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

morrissey's just being a bitch! he's just like that! it's funny! who cares? madonna seems like a ho anyway. moz is like don rickles or something he just says stuff to say it.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure he does. Why would that make any difference?

he doesn't appear to say anything of the sort on stage

gabbneb, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

Madonna...so much to answer for...

shanissey, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

I bet Madonna is much more fun to hang out with.

Richard Wood Johnson, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

Morrissey vs. Philadelphia? I think Philly wins this round. Hijinks below:

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, this needs to be posted (form the link above)...

uh, mega update...

so earlier i was at my mom's in nj. my girlfriend calls me from moms to tell me whats up. i'm kinda like "whoa, awesome." i'm a fan and all, but not all crazy. erica mentioned the upstairs thing on here, but i guess that never really happened (yet), as moz and co. were downstairs in the back room.

anyway, i get home from nj and post this. my girl calls me back and is like, hey come have a drink, plus...moz and company aren't going anywhere, so i go.

i get there, get a beer, have a peek in the back, and there he is! i really wanna go get a picture, but don't wanna be a jerk, and he looks really preoccupied with his band/the opening band/bodyguard/etc. i retreat.

a beer or two later, i see him get up and move to a small table. i say fuck it and make my move. i walk up and say hello and ask if i can get a picture with him. mr. moz looks at me and starts shaking his head saying "no, no, no, no." i kinda think he's maybe messing around and laugh, and say something like "okay, come on...", but no it is! i kinda feel like a jerkoff, and he actually seems quite drunk, so i walk away, kinda mad, feeling kinda stupid, kinda resenting him big time, and feeling kinda good about not buying a like 60 dollar ticket to his show. all in all, what a dick! i don't do this stuff, but it's MORRISSEY right?

so shortly after i walk away, he and his crew go upstairs. at this point, anyone can go up there, and a lot of people do. whatever, i ain't going. fuck him. you know what? i'm sure that the fan shit and picture shit gets really old really quick. i can understand that, but, if you don't wanna deal, don't go to the one bar in the city where everyone knows who you are. don't do some fake "i wanna be around the people!" shit and then be a jerkoff to your fans...and by the way, at this point, mine isn't the only story. he's been a dick to several people.

so a friend of mine goes upstairs, and soon after they restrict access. this just makes it worse. like, they don't want a strict private party...they don't close it off and kick everyone who isn't in the crew downstairs. no. they want like the illusion of being in a shitty bar with the normal folk, but only kinda. it's a joke. hang at the hotel bar or in your suite. don't come to my regular bar and be a big fucking pussy phoney.

so the friend, who is a giant giant fan and also posts here, gets up the guts to approach the man, just to say thank you for his music and whats it's meant to her. she looks at him, starts walking over, he LOOKS AWAY and a bodyguard gets in the way and says something like "this is a private party" and shuns her, meanwhile shes AT the "private party". it's just so fucking jerked off. like, who is lining this asshole's pockets? people like her. people that post here. it's just incredibly fucked up to me. DON'T GO IN PUBLIC if you can't deal with it! dickhead!

so whatever. i'm at the bar with friends having drinks, we laugh and joke about how stupid it all is and end up having a blast. mike quinn and minirich pop in to see the moz, they can't get upstairs, they bail. it's just silly.

more drinks, more laughs, more fun. things started out awkward and annoying but now it's just a good time. i go out for a cigarette with a few people. while we're outside, moz and a couple people come out fast and immediately jump in a cab. i do some quick thinking and gave them two big middle fingers as they drive off. he totally looks back and sees it. fuck it. act like an asshole in my town, in my bar, get treated like one...but not so serious. whatever. it's the fucking finger. who cares. we laugh and talk about how ridiculous it is that we just gave morrissey the finger, and back inside we go.

i march inside proclaiming how i just gave morrissey the finger when suddenly, there's in my face. like, right in my face, like, an inch away. he says "you did what?" all hard like. i check him out, he's dressed nice...suit and tie, like the rest of the crew. he's either in the band or the opening band or somehow connected. he steps it up to the point where his forehead is basically touching mine. he's drunk. it's tense. i don't really feel like it has to go there, so i tell him to relax, and tell him where i'm coming from. he's cool about it and offers to buy me a drink. i accept, we shake hands and shit, but i really don't like the look of the guy. something is just off. i switch it up and buy him a drink instead. i don't know why, it just felt right. i didn't want his fucking drink....fuck you. I'M buying, and you're an asshole. take that.

so i give him his drink, we shake hands, i just go back to talking with friends. fuck the whole thing. it's just lame and it ended up turning into a pretty great random sunday night. this dude kinda disappears from my general vision/care, and that's that. or not. a few minutes later he's chatting up a female friend of mine, and starts getting a little dirty and inappropriate. she's not having it. he starts getting a bit nasty. i don't catch this but another friend who isn't any kind of fighter or tough guy gets alarmed.

so mozzer's guy is getting really upset that his advances not only aren't working, but he's also now catching the wrath of a chick straight out of frankford who just isn't having it. he gets nasty about her and the rest of us. she takes the drink i bought for him from him and says something like, fuck you, don't drink with us then asshole, etc. he THROWS he drink out of her hand and like really gets in her face. my friend who doesn't fight shoots up out of his seat and gets involved. the guy gets mad. he's really ready to fight. it kinda gets pulled apart, i kinda try to move in, i get held back, it seems like its whatever...drunk nonsense, let's all cool off.

nope. guy breaks away and runs towards my friend, winding up what would have been a devastating punch...

nah!

i get up behind him real quick and choke him out with my forearm and throw him hard to the ground. a couple random people in the bar who have seen all this bullshit move in to start kicking and stuff, but it's really not at that level, and they get rightfully pushed away. at this point he has some friends that try to get in the mix, but they kinda know better, and just get him out of there and into a cab.

bottom line, the guy was a fucking asshole...he was treated respectfully, was welcomed by locals who his asshole boss/leader/whatever had earlier shunned, and then acted a fucking fool, and almost caught a bad one.

thank god i am not paying like 60 bucks to see this bullshit tomorrow.

Like, is this true?

daavid, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

Oh wait, I thought he was talking about Morrissey on the second part too. I guess it's not that interesting then.

daavid, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

If it's a band member, it jives with the adventures of a buddy's ex-girlfriend in 2004. Somehow she got a pass to the concert after party at the Loews Miami Beach, a few blocks from the venue at which Moz played that night. He never showed, but the band did, and a couple of them were hitting on her all night. She said they were real sleazos about it too: conventionally loutish.
