ok, this about the cd that made the artist/s into a genius.
why?
give examples.

ok, I pick autechre tri repetae/garbage They turned abrasive mechanical sounds into ambient music with specific emotions portrayed by subtle changes in beats and the nature of the synths/chords chosen. don't argue. too hard to explain. genius
― CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)
now someone pick bob dylan so I can talk trash
― CaptainLorax, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)
autechre is more than one person? that hardly seems necessary.

plus, a cat would know enough to run from any room where autechre was playing. geniuses are a dime a dozen. i had a calzone a couple years back, man oh man, whoever made that should have their hands bronzed and hung over the fireplace. not with their actual hands in bronze! i'm assuming some sort of cast is made when you bronze something.

the yes album. from the opening riffs and bombastic bass line. nothing had ever been so ridiculous but ruled so much. lost in losing circumstances. and they kept it up through close to the edge. damn

With The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons had some flashes of inspiration but nothing too notable. Then, GP and Grievous Angel, as a two album progression, established him as a genius.

Scott Walker - The Drift -A masterpiece and work of genius. Totally untouchable. I'm truly sorry if you can't get into it.
Kate Bush - The Dreaming -Possibly the only instance of Kate holding back nothing. She just pours all her genius into this record. Hounds of Love comes close to matching this. Honorable mention to Aerial for being yet another genius Kate album (although Ned got to Pi before Kate did)
Elliott Smith - Either/Or, XO -I had to include both albums for being perfect start-to-finish, yet significantly different from eachother in their scope.
Bjork - Homogenic, Medulla -Homogenic is just a ridiculously solid record that deserves to be remembered and I'm sure it will be. Unfortunately, Medulla doesn't get as much respect but in my opinion it's Bjork really pushing herself to a whole new level.
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead -Everything the Smiths put out was genius but TQID is probably the most solid studio album of theirs. I'd definitely make a case for Louder Than Bombs/Hatful of Hollow because the Smiths were also an incredible singles band that I think is unmatched when it comes to b-sides.

Lick my decals off, Baby
where to begin with this - Dada-esque art of the highest order.
Ramones - first four or five. they were given grief by some because the music was basic. if it was easy to play how come they had NO imitators? the elements they effortlessly fused along with the presentation screams genius to me.
― outdoor_miner, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)
no imitators? um...
― sexyDancer, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)
Sergeant Pepper. Probably nothing else, if 'genius' is to be at all meaningful. Otherwise you're just listing your favourite bands' best records, or the top 100 albums of all time or something. Sergeant Pepper is genius because it took music that was already perfect, and added something else.
― Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

If punk hadn't destroyed music, "Sgt. Pepper" would still have been considered the masterpiece by most people.
― Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)
Music is not destroyed?! It will still be here, long after we've stopped typing away, my friend.
― nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)
That's simply not true. There are a lot of other reasons why many people don't consider Sgt. Pepper the masterpiece, but you seem to filter everything through a model of the world that is too rigid to allow any possibilities but the ones you imagine. x
― humansuit, Tuesday, 24 July 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)
I'm kind of hesitant to propose this, as I'm sure it'll get shot down. Really the only album I own, out of thousands, that I'd consider out and out genius is The Moles "Untune The Sky."
I always have trouble putting this succintly, but the general reasons why have to do with:
1. Managing to combine the Beatles' pop and Revolution #9 sensibility in a way that detracts from neither, which is something that the Beatles (much less their followers) never managed.
2. Filled with songs that violate nearly every rule of traditional pop song structure, but without leaving the pop universe *and* never the same way twice.
3. An uncanny ability (see "Tendrils and Paracetamol" especially) to be indescribibly repetitive again without leaving the universe of pop.
4. Take almost any pop artist: Robyn Hitchcock, Beatles, etc. and it's not so hard to write a reasonably convincing pastiche. It's hard for me to imagine anyone doing this with the Moles with any success.
In sum, "Untune" isn't my favorite CD in my collection, but I simply can't imagine anyone ever producing anything like it, something I couldn't say about any number of theoretically weirder/better albums (e.g. Tilt, Trout Mask, Metal Machine, Sgt. Pepper, the list goes on...)
I could probably explain better if I weren't slightly drunk, but I swear I've felt this way for a long time.
― dlp9001, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)
i gotta try that one!
also, yeah punk might have destroyed lots of music but I believe punk can be saved
― CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)
i think the reason that i love the moles 'untune the sky' is that it sounds like so many of my favorite flying nun bands all at once.

"If punk hadn't destroyed music, "Sgt. Pepper" would still have been considered the masterpiece by most people"
Sgt. Pepper isn't even the best Beatle album. Geir you're slipping.
― leavethecapital, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)
Music is not destroyed?!
It sort of is. Before punk, music was judged from musical skills. After punk, all kinds of other criteria has been brought in, with skills often considered a bad thing rather than a good one.
"Sgt. Pepper" was a big influence on prog, whose values have for the most part been undervalued after punk.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)
Sgt. Pepper isn't even the best Beatle album.
It was until the mid 70s. It isn't until later that it has been overtaken by "Revolver" because concept albums became unfashionable.
― Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)
The Beatles bore me.

One day after time travel is invented there will be some kind of catastrophic accident which opens up a portal into the universe where this is true.
