Best Fabric since Michael Mayer? CD mix of the year? I'm putting it out the fellas....
― paulhw, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)
All I know is that Cortney Tidwell remix. It's pretty smokin' though.
― I know, right?, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)
it is too early to say best of the year for me, but it is damn good and a nice return to form for the series. very listenable/approachable, clever mixing, lots of style, zeitgeist-y, just nice.

To be honest I'm not 100% sold on Fabric 35 - it's very good but I don't get the sort of magical delirious vibe I get off the best bits of his Sci-Fi Hi-Fi mix. I think he actually describes it as a "heads-down" kinda mix and I think that's right, I'd almost describe it as workmanlike.
On the other hand, FINALLY:

good god "piece work", this is just so good. really nice sleeve notes, phil.
jacques lu cont really needs one of these
― babedad, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)
the 12" has that totally 'i feel love'-d out mix of 'train', miles better than the one on the actual comp.
― haitch, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)
hey thanks babedad! they pretty much wrote themselves -- one of the more rewarding projects i've gotten to do in quite some time. and holy hell, i've just gotten to hear THREE of ewan's mixes for supermayer's "the art of letting go," and holy hell (wait i just said that) i'm pretty sure that the dub version is one of ewan's best mixes yet. stripped down, freaky as hell, less "funny ha-ha" than "funny uh-oh." in the best way.
― pshrbrn, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)
Love the early stuff, but Ewan's production got really boring a year or so ago and now he seems to be right back on form again. Cortney Tidwell mix is still probably my favourite record of the year.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)
For anyone who found his Fabric mix a little on the serious, cold, stern side, this (free) mix is a return to more slow, gorgeous sci-fi-hi-fi stuff:

thanks for the tip

he's looking a bit 'silver fox' with that hair!
― haitch, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)
True indeed. A brave move, keeping it long and curly, rather than doing the DJ head shave thing. But honestly (although I started this thread with premature plaudits about the Fabric mix) this mix is fantastic. So pretty, moody, and musical.
― paulhw, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)
have had the worst week ever, a ewan pearson mix that starts out with "nocturne" is WELL IN FUCKING ORDER
― lukas, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)
Starting with "Nocturn" and ending with the BTWS remix of "Roscoe" = Ewan Pearson IS nu-balearic. Looking forward to this.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)
Excellent! I'm enjoying this even more than his Fabric. Thanks for linking
― micarl, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)
So bizarre. I just came back from the store having bought this seconds ago.
― Mackro Mackro, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 04:51 (eighteen years ago)
I love the Solaris soundtrack to death (from which First Sleep is taken), but I never would've thought it could be used in a mix, on top of Can no less.
bravo Ewan!

For anyone who found his Fabric mix a little on the serious, cold, stern side
Really? I put that on if I want a mix which is quite light and poppy!
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)
Hmm, I'm questioning my adjectives. Maybe hard, thick, and driving? (lucky I'm not a music writer, huh?).
But yeah, I love the way the allez mix is paced.
― paulhw, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)
I know what you're getting at Paul, the Fabric mix was definitely Pearson at his least melodic and floaty. I feel it sort of loses its way in the middle section, but the first and final acts are fantastic.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)
allez mix is really cool but I think that Vangelis song needs to be un-re-discovered! been on every beardo balearic related mix of the last year and a half
― dmr, Thursday, 20 December 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)
I feel it sort of loses its way in the middle section,
Haha, again that's the bit I like best, from Liquid Liquid to Johannes Heil. I guess when I really think about it, my preference in dance music is functionalism, music for the body, preferring to look for melody and hooks in other music.
― Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 22 December 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)
DEAR EWAN,
THIS IS TREMENDOUS.
MERRY CHRISTMAS,
MATT DC
― Matt DC, Saturday, 22 December 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)
i think i may go and see him dj at t bar on nye on the strength of these two mixes. can we talk about his godlike remix of supermayer on this thread? can't stop playing it, and it blends perfectly well with pretty much anything, those vocals sound so great bubbling beneath the mix
― r1o natsume, Saturday, 22 December 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
track at 8 or 9 mins. on the allez mix is fantastic, with all the trippy synths, I guess it's this? --
hatchback - white diamond (prins thomas disco miks part 1) (thisisnotanexit)
also this sounds cool
keep an eye out for the new partial arts (his project with al usher) release on kompakt, 'telescope' coming in january.

I...can't tell? The 5 FPS video and speaker-blowing all-treble sound on that youtube clip are making positive identification difficult...

Maybe it was his birthday.
Henrik Schwarz did that for his ra podcast.

what's the good word on the silver fox's 'we are proud of our choices' mix on kompakt?
― the deep housing bubble (haitch), Sunday, 14 February 2010 13:39 (sixteen years ago)
no idea
but saw him on Sat night (doing a five-hour set!) and can report that while the hair is back to a close crop, it's even more silver and foxier than upthread

also he is still playing Do It Now again (sic)

I did an interview with Ewan a few weeks back...http://ablankcassette.blogspot.com/2010/01/ewan-pearson-interview.html
waiting for Kompakt to send me a promo of the new mix.
― Dwight Yorke, Monday, 15 February 2010 20:37 (sixteen years ago)
The new mix on Kompakt is fantastic, way better than his Fabric mix. I like Pearson best when he's doing warm and colourful and florid - it's kind of joining this dots between Kompakt's lusher trancier side and nu-Balearic... there's a terrific remix of Al Usher on there.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 19 February 2010 10:45 (sixteen years ago)
His Fabric CD was the one mix that seemed conspicuously absent on the few best of the decade lists of mixes I looked over. Glad to see that link for the allez mix is still alive - really looking forward to hearing it based on the tracklisting. Thanks. And the Kompakt mix sounds well worth checking out too.
― viborg, Friday, 19 February 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
Picked this up today. It's nice. Very pretty, though maybe a little less "dance" than I'd have hoped. Still, I've heard it 0.9 times...
― paulhw, Thursday, 25 February 2010 21:22 (sixteen years ago)
god, the new mix really is a blast. i wouldn't call it warm exactly but it's got tons of hooky greyscale melodies. lots of fun.
― jabba hands, Friday, 12 March 2010 07:33 (sixteen years ago)
Currently downloading his recent Clubberia podcast.
― sam500, Friday, 12 March 2010 08:41 (sixteen years ago)
i love his mix of "visions" by Slam so much, heartmelting stuff
― brimstead, Friday, 30 August 2013 01:54 (twelve years ago)
his kompakt mix is rather good.when i first listened i gave up with it as it drifted into stuff that gave me acid jazz style flashbacks, but if you stick with it then things totally kick back into touch later on.
