And the weird thing was yesterday I heard some car playing "Rooster" quite loud, but this was before the initial rumors went around. Odd.

So Alice in Chains -- I liked 'em. Took me a while to move from mere knowledge to actual appreciation, and I can't say I've played the albums into the ground ever. But still, there was something there, and I ended up seeing them live twice, both times they put on a good show.

If only Staley had been more known for this part of his career, though. Anyway, RIP and all.

Of course, now it further occurs to me that he is the man in the box, those bones are him and he did die young. Thanks, I'll be here all week.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

holy shit! Layne Staley died? Damn, where the hell was I when this happened?

chimchim, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Down in a hole?

Andy K, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked 'em, although post grunge era I haven't listened to them at all... both of my CDs have gone missing I've found. Can't say it comes as a complete shock, though. His death, I mean.

Holy shit, Ned. What next? Jello Biafra's secret past in a Journey tribute band?

Anyhow. I lump AiC in with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in the "bands I cared less about after I graduated high school and discovered the Stooges" category, but I still think "Got Me Wrong" is a pretty good song. That and "No Excuses". Damn lousy nostalgia.

If find it creepy that the "Layne Looks a Rooster" photo at http://www .metal-sludge.com/ExposedAliceInChains.htm looks like it ought to say "Layne Looks suspiciously like Courtney Love." (His eyes glow red just...like...Courtney's!)

Lord Custos II, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and the collage at the top looks like some female biker chik impersonating Dee Snyder. Ick. Enough to put you off your food.

Holy shit, Ned. What next? Jello Biafra's secret past in a Journey tribute band?
Naw. Everybody knows JB played mandolin in a soft-cock-rock band called "REM Stationwagon"
You should hear his rendition of "Can't Fight this Feeling Anymore."; Absolutely ace!

Lord Custos II, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait - does this mean grunge is dead?

J Blount, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Musical styles never "die" they just go underground. They move from "Top of the Pops" to your corner bar band. Those bands that keep the faith are rewarded 20 years later when that style comes back into vogue. Check it...
Mod: Who--->Jam--->Britpop.
70s Rock: Nazareth--->Alice in Chains--->???

Lord Custos II, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nazareth ---> Alice in Chains ---> Nickelback

J Blount, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eeeeeuuuwwww. Maybe a style coming back is not a good thing.

No...waitasecond. The Neo-Grunge wave shouldn't get superhuge until at least 2011-2013!

Lord Custos II, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's all so pathetic, these little spoiled Seattle brats...what a fantasy world they want. Get a life, oppps! To late. Why do you think they can it dope? Thor Heyerdahl just passed, and John Jackson the wonderful bluesman from Virginia. Both from natural causes.

"Weep the tears of sadness silent, for love lost and life...alas".

I just flew back from Seattle this morning. Coincidence?

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Better hide that needle. Did you meet up with Brian, BTW?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hiding the Space Noodle would be pretty hard. I met up with Brian and he made me listen to Andrew WK before taking me to a cool little coffee place and showing me where some of the record stores were downtown. But surely this is not the place to gab about my Seattle experience. Surely this is more the place to fondly reminisce about Alice in Chains, something that would probably be a lot easier for me if I actually didn't find Staley's swooping vocalisms annoying as fuck about half the time. Not that I'd wish death on him for it or anything.

Look at that punk. How can you trust his judgment on *anything*?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Caught blue and bearded!

Still though, kinda weird to think that this photo was snapped right around the time police were dispatched to a house near the corner of 8th av and 45th st. just east of I-5 only to discover.....SHUDDER.

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To Think?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wonder exactly where on 8th and 45th it was. I park on that street (if it's the one I'm thinking of) often, because I work nearby.
