I wuz wondering when they would get around to this…thought it would be a lot sooner than now…the history of meh-tuhll, from 1970 to 1991…
Immediately, I notice no Van Halen (not surprised EVH and co. wouldn't wanna play ball), no GnR (ditto), no Ozzy or Ozzy-era Sabbath (ditto), no AC/DC (ditto), no Def Lep, (ditto), no Crue or Grand Funk (am surprised either wouldn't play ball). But metallica let 'em have two songs, which is odd, and Kiss let 'em have one, which isn't. Huh.
your thoughts, nerdlingers? what's missing? is the NWOBHM adequately represented? how about the thrash/speed idiom? should Danzig be on there? the Cult's "Love Removal Machine"?

I was really hoping this was a PiL reissue.
― Jazzbo, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)
Keith Levene vs. Michael Schenker…
hmmm…
― Veronica Moser, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
someone did the pil reissue this year, i thot? 4 men with beards maybe?
― hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)
Yes - it was 4 men with beards and as with all their stuff, an awesome re-issue. As to the track listing above - what utter shit - I wouldn't give this away - really really bad choices - horrible NWOBHM representation, way too much hair metal and hard rock and horrible 'big 4' thrash choices ... and christ on a cross - not one Voivod track - utter shit.

No early Funkadelic, no credibility.
― Sara Sara Sara, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)
Disc 3 is embarrassing.

who is this box for? it's obviously not for die-hard metal people and those casually interested aren't generally going to buy an expensive box set.
― latebloomer, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)
and almost no representation of the death/black/doom/grind continuum which is basically ignoring the reigning paradigms of the last what, 20 years?
― latebloomer, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)
They did pick my fave Skid Row song though.
― Colonel Poo, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
at least there's no nu-metal, i'll give it that.
― latebloomer, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:58 (eighteen years ago)
I know I was waiting for a comp that went from Lita Ford to 'South of Heaven' in the space of about 12 minutes
― DJ Mencap, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
Well it does only go up to 1991, so I think its fair that they didn't delve into all that. I think entering those areas would only make this box more awkward.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
'89-'91 is a fertile time for death metal!
― J0hn D., Friday, 27 July 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
Well yeah, but I almost feel like black/death needs its own box. It would just be too weird tacked on the end after all that glam/pop metal of Rhino's set.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 July 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)
This looks completely useless.
― Stormy Davis, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
As a non-metalhead and someone who's not really a big fan of any of these bands, I think this might be interesting to hear at least once.
― o. nate, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)
I bet it'll have sweet packaging though!
― novaheat, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)
what a joke...it goes south pretty quickly after "Godzilla"...
― henry s, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
I wonder how come I haven't received an e-mail announcing this...I write about metal from time to time, after all.

OTM

WTF with all the griping? This box is fantastic! I wish it had been playing at the parties I went to in college, rather than Toad the Wet Sprocket, the Doors, and the like.
This box set should become the official anthem-box-set of Michigan and Indiana and any other land where mullets and Camaros still reign supreme.
― Euler, Friday, 27 July 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)
WTF with all the griping? This box is fantastic!
It just seems like I could have taped a few radio shows back in 1990 or so and just released that instead, though. Probably more a case of familiarity breeding contempt in my case.
