Speakerboxxx/The Love Below

I am kind of shocked that the songs I am debating between are "The Rooster" vs "A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre".

"Bowtie" is the only song I'd even consider voting for.

I went with Prototype. Me loves it.

Not a massive fan of this album though, its a bit stilted and not quite as garishly colourful as I was led to believe. Some great bits though. Ghettomusick is insane.

Bowtie or Way You Move. I like the verses on Tomb of the Boom too, but the beat is kind of ehhh.

I haven't listened to "The Love Below" in a while, but the Speakerboxxx disc is solid and outstanding.

Oh yeah, this could potentially be interesting since odds are in favor of Hey Ya! not winning this.

well, i assume we're setting aside hey ya on general principle, it's bigger than life itself the album. on an emo day i would easily vote 'unhappy' but tomb of the boom is it, I like the verses and the beat is the shit.

i'd hear an argument for "ghetto muzik"/"thw way you move" MAYBE or "toom of the boom" if you're one of those people, but otherwise plz get over yrselves.

sorry, but ghettomusick is the best song on this whole thing -- it's like a guy who cums 4 minutes into having sex, it's just no fun :-(

"Hey Ya!" is a great, great song but it isn't and never has been my favorite from both of these; "Ghettomusik" was my favorite for a period of time but I think "The Rooster" is better.

that doesn't mean it's not easily the best song. i'm sick to death of the beach boys but that doesn't mean i don't think they're brilliant etc. etc.

not what i'm saying. just that i remember geeking the fuck out over "hey ya" and just because i still don't do that four years later doesn't mean those memories don't still resonate.
plus i still like "hey ya" a lot but i'm not going to try and make you "understand" me re: it's merits when compared to some speakerboxxx album cut.

haha deej i' m actually just not sick of the song. I don't think i listened to the radio at all that year and since then the random, banal, tinny dept. store ambushes have taken a bit of a toll but spinning it from the album in its full glory is enough to shake the cobwebs off. when that doesn't work i analyze the fuck out of why i still like it :O/

I still geek out at "Hey Ya!". Conversely, I never want to hear "The Way You Move" (which I heard way more at the time, hell I probably heard "Roses" more at the time) ever again. Gets my vote.

forgot to take out 'Panties' there - all the skits can fuck off (but the ones on Speakerboxx are just as bad - more dull as opposed to irritating like Andre's tho)

The skit with Big Boi's son still kills me.

I had forgotten how much I love this entire thing.

"The Rooster," but "Knowing" is seriously, madly underrated.

"Church" is seriously, madly underrated.

Isn't there only one skit on Speakerboxxx? And I can't recall any particularly bad ones from Andre's disc. They're one of the only groups who actually do a good job with skits.

Missed the vote but would've gone with "Spread," yet another in a long line of great Prince songs not by Prince.

I get depressed when I'm dancing to "Hey Ya!" which happens a lot; it's been played at almost every dance party I've attended in the last 4 years. That "you just wanna dance" part really crushes me, makes me ponder the possibility of politics on the dancefloor. I mean, how many people are aware that what they're shaking like a Polaroid picture to is basically a musical version of Fellini's The White Sheik - fun, even goofy but loaded with embarrassment and defeat.

i think that's fairly common knowledge.

The Love Below has aged TERRIBLY. Speakerboxx still jams, and detached from its cousin may have actually improved in my eyes.

Will get there...

ahh man, idlewild was disappointing. but, even then, it still had two or three absolute jams. 'morris brown' most obviously. i remember hearing that before the album came out and thinking that it would be the return to form i was wanting so much. of course, the album wasn't and that was that.

i'd still say 'morris brown' ranks very highly in retrospect.

What's the film like? Any good?

Idlewild (the album) is terrific!

if idlewild is terrific, then their previous discography is the sum total of the greatest albums ever made.

Anyone remember how much of a pain in the arse the packaging was?? It had some weird wraparound mega-sticker which made the box impossible to shut.

I don't really love Rick Rubin, but he has a podcast where he talks to Andre that's reaaally illuminating, to hear how insecure and not confident he sounds about making music these days (and also hesitant to put anything out as a big product that draws the spotlight to him, which is completely understandable).

i listened to that and was really upset by it, tbh. i felt really frustrated while listening because i kept saying, "yeah, but if you have a producer or someone else trustworthy there to help you, you could be making music that changes the world."

i'd like to know how his collab with james blake came about. a mount kimbie-produced andre3000 record has potential, i'd reckon.

There were rumours of 3000/Squarepusher collab for years which I think would probably not be good.

funny story: i've never heard a single squarepusher album.

I felt frustrated by Rubin's continued advice on how to turn his music into a saleable product (even though my mind works the same way, I always think I know what kind of album my friends should be making with their particular talents). He's already made plenty of music that changed the world, and he presumably doesn't need the money. If he gets enjoyment out of learning new instruments and playing his bass clarinet at the beach, why should he have to make a fully produced album so that people can make money?

Re: Sir Lucious Left Foot, wasn't Big Boi forced to take out some tracks featuring Dre because some assholes at Jive claimed it was a contractual violation ("those are OutKast tracks, we'll sue you if you put those on a solo album")?

I love that album, but I always wondered what the original version Big Boi intended would have been like.

There are at least two songs with big and dre verses from the period—“royal flush” and “lookin 4 ya.” I think three stacks was supposed to have a verse on “the train” too, which was cut

I barely remember Love Below songs other than the singles, and Happy Valentine's Day.

Not listened to it in a while but Sir Luscious Leftfoot is such an amazing record.

I find it strange how S/TLB and SLL:TSOCD were (so rightly) hailed and acclaimed, but their follow ups (Idlewild and Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumours) made relatively little impact as far as I know. I don't even know if I've even heard Vicious Lies

I know BOOMIVERSE's "Chocolate" because the hook is immense.

A couple years ago I randomly flipped on the radio while making lunch, it was on the local classical station and I freaked out when I heard the sample.

Yeah. I remember the year it cane out was one of the best years of my life and each tune was such a dope party anthem, almost made me wanna go out a throw down any time i put it on.

So it was kinda sad listening to it two months ago in the COVID era but it still held up well
