Listening To The Higsons

Years ago I bought and later sold the Higsons singles comp. Recently I've been reacquainted with them and have a whole new appreciation for their northern funk. I'm listening to their BBC collection and it's pretty damn fun.

Anyone else have a take on 'em?

Mr. Odd, Friday, 27 July 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Northern? Weren't they from East Anglia?

bidfurd, Friday, 27 July 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Norwich.

And they eat a lot of porridge (whoah-a-oh).

One of the Higsons taught me at UEA. He was good!

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Pardon me while I let this hen out.

Sure about that?

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Because that looks like Paul Whitehouse, who was in The Fast Show with Charlie Higson but NOT in the Higsons afaik.

"One of the Higsons taught me at UEA. He was good!"

As to the question, did they do 'you're going to find me... way out in the country' or was that the Farmer's Boys?

bidfurd, Friday, 27 July 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

That was the Farmers Boys

I like the Higsons. I love the Farmers Boys. I found the Norwich comp. There's even more bands like that.

I bought Gotta Let This Heat Out because I recognized the name/line from the Hitchock song. The funk of the title track did nothing for me, but the flipside, It Goes Waap was more my speed, tempo-wise.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2007 21:26 (eighteen years ago)

What's this Norwich comp, Dan?

I MISS NORWICH!

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

It's called "Norwich, A Fine City" feat. The Happy Few, The Higsons, Screen 3, The Mohair Twins, The Panic Parade, The Dynics and Capitalist Music.

Of course it was ripped and blogged on Mutant Sounds.

My copy wasn't that expensive. I don't know how much demand there is! I will say for the millionth time though, the ubiquitious Farmers Boys double 7" For You single with bonus tracks like Drinking and Dressing Up, I Thinke I Need Help and I Don't Know Why I Hate All My Friends is the finest single recorded artifact of the 20th century and rarely runs you more than a dollar. And even still none of those songs are as good as More Than A Dream.

a lo-fi taster from the old Farmers Boys site

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

if i wasn't too lazy I'd take a pic of the sleeve of the comp to show that yes, it is a photo of that exact sign, minus the weird bottom part.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

you don't have twin towns in the US?

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

ah, you call them sister cities

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

We have the Twin Cities. But what about the rest, surely that isn't the name of an English town? If we have sister cities, it's when they're right next to each other...DC and Baltimore, San Francisco and Oakland.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

No, we have towns twinned with other cities in other European countries. For example Stanmore, close to where I am originally from, is twinned with a town called Douai in NW France.

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm guessing that Norwich is twinned with Rouen, Koblenz and Novi Sad (I thought it was Said?) rather than that being one town haha!

admrl, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

I always worry that the abroad towns have been swizzed; some lovely picturesque, civilised european town has been matched up with some UK shithole.

bidfurd, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Norwich is nice though!

bidfurd, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

I hear it's fine.

dan selzer, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

As long as we're talking Twin Cities, lemme reprazent for my old hometown
of Sault Ste. Marie...Ontario!

Damnit, Mr. Odd, you have absolutely put a lightbulb over my head and a feather in my cap. I do dearly wish I had a whole disc of the Higsons but instead I just have this cassette tape of a record or two of theirs I recorded at a friends house years ago (including one full length LP) and low and behold, I do actually pull it out every now and then. I met a guy a few years ago who I think knew one of the band, actually. I didn't get to know this guy very well, though. Maybe it was just that he told me one of the members lives in my town, now. I can't recall. Something like that.

Anyway I do dearly wish I had some great big double CD compilation of them. That would be fantastic.

Oh my god and "It Goes Waap"! Yes, Dan that is fantastic song.

Bimble, Saturday, 28 July 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)
