Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

Not particularly impressive lineup, but Max Martin's work for Britney Spears this particular year is the best he ever did. Voted "Lucky".

Geir Hongro, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

How can you deny the power of "Aaron's Party?" Just kidding.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Shake It Fast" wtf

groovemaaan, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Close to voting for Mystikal, cleaned-up or not, but had to go for "Don't Think I'm Not" in the end. Great one.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, these polls don't need 6 days to take. We'll never catch up with the latest one at this rate!

The thing with this volume is that, track by track, it's not that bad, but as a cohesive unit it's quite poor. "Jumpin' Jumpin'" is good, "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" is a great BSB ballad, and dammit, "Aaron's Party" is fun! I'm voting for "Kryptonite" though. And "Lucky" is the worst Britney song ever. Or the second worst if you count album tracks...that Dear Diary track and the end of the album was just embarrassing.

musically, Friday, 27 July 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

tough call between "Case of the Ex" and "Shake It Fast". "Jumpin' Jumpin'" is probably the one of these that gets stuck in my head the most often, but I only know the chorus and the two seconds immediately preceding it ("But this party ain't gon' stop, so let's make it hot, hot!"). I remember singing along with "Back Here" really quietly so that no one could hear. I remember thinking "Story of a Girl" was really awesome. I remember wondering why no one else seemed to notice that the lyrics "Kryptonite" were dumb as fuck. I don't remember anything about "Wonderful" except that I didn't like it as much as "Father of Mine". "It's My Life" is indefensible; sadly, I do remember it.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

oh right, "Aaron's Party". I was just on the cusp of being able to appreciate it ironically, but I think I was still slightly too young at the time.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

More mediocre-or-worse. Stuck between 'NSync's only US #1 and "Doesn't Really Matter."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

ooh i forgot about case of the ex! still voted for jumpin' jumpin' though

A B C, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

I've never heard "BBMak."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:16 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait, I just looked up "Doesn't Really Matter" -- the AIBO song!!! I remember this! the production is nice but the tune needs a little bit of work, doesn't it? very blah, feels like it was cobbled together from about five other hit songs of that era (one of them is Usher's "You Make Me Wanna", I can't quite figure out the others)

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

I just suddenly remembered "Faded", too; that's the "kinda faded, but I feel alright / thinkin' 'bout makin' my move tonight" one, right? I'm not really sure what they were going for there. what a weird time for music.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:27 (eighteen years ago)

Nine Days : "Absolutely (Story Of A Girl)"

this is the worst shit ever

3 Doors Down : "Kryptonite"

no, wait, this is

Everclear : "Wonderful"

hold up, I think we have a winner

milo z, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

Story Of A Girl is soooo much worse than Kryptonite and Wonderful!!

da croupier, Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

was "Drops of Jupiter" ever on one of these or did it skew too old?

milo z, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

destiny's child blows away anything else on that list.

s1ocki, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

This is horrible! "Case of the Ex" should win, but I'll probably just vote for "It's My Life" 'cause of the video.

Tape Store, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

By "video," do you mean "SNL sketch"? Because I was really tempted to vote for it based on the interpretive dance...

musically, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't seen the SNL sketch, but I'd be surprised if it came close to the video. HILARIOUS PREMISE

Tape Store, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)

FUNNIER FOLLOW-THROUGH

Tape Store, Saturday, 28 July 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

jeeze, that is pretty bad. and is it just me, or did they slow the song down about 50% for that video, this robbing it of the vaguely energetic quality that was its only redeeming value?

bernard snowy, Saturday, 28 July 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, nostalgia can't even save this abysmal collection. Does BBMak win, unbelievably, by default?

Cunga, Saturday, 28 July 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone who votes for 3DD or Nine Days should be banned. I mean, you're simply not allowed to have an opinion when it comes to those sort of things...

Stevie D, Saturday, 28 July 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

That Nine Days song is terrible but Kryptonite is all right. Although now I think I should vote for Aaron's Party...I have the CD single right here. Convenience!

musically, Saturday, 28 July 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and here's the link to the SNL sketch: http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/#mea=2668

musically, Saturday, 28 July 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

How is this not a Mystikal landslide? Like O RLY?

2. Janet Jackson : "Doesn't Really Matter"
3. Mýa : "Case of the Ex"
4. Backstreet Boys : "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely"
5. Britney Spears : "Lucky"

The Reverend, Saturday, 28 July 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

How is this not a Mystikal landslide? Like O RLY?

fuh real.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 28 July 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Faded." Someone should vote for it who isn't me.

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 July 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

Can we get to Vol. 9 soon plz?

Tape Store, Monday, 30 July 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

lol bon jovi

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 30 July 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

My vote is for "I'm in love with a german filmstar"

I don't care.

Mark G, Monday, 30 July 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 2 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

groovemaaan, Friday, 3 August 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, when this one ends tonight, I'm going to do 6, 7 and 8 simultaneously.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

3 Doors Down : "Kryptonite" 8

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tape Store, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

Two people voted for "Story Of A Girl," that's way fucking scarier.

da croupier, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

BTW, considering what it is (a preteen party jam), "Aaron's Party" is horribly tame.

Tape Store, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)

HOW DID NOT ONE PERSON VOTE FOR FADED?!? THIS IS TOTALLY MY JAMAMMMMM

johnny crunch, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

What the eff? Ban ped0philes.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

I demand that everyone who didn't listen to "Case of the Ex" go listen to it again right now and realize what you're missing

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

also I can no longer enjoy "Jumpin' Jumpin'" since I realized that it reminds me of the thizzle dance

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

"The Thizzle Dance" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Jumpin' Jumpin'" (But I've never liked the latter)

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 August 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm watching the Aaron's Party video on Youtube, and it's GREAT...(The Beatles + The Rolling Stones) * Awesome.

musically, Saturday, 4 August 2007 05:11 (eighteen years ago)

And Aaron didn't have to have gotten busted; if Saved By The Bell has taught us anything, he could have pretended that it was actually a surprise party for his parents. Duh!

musically, Saturday, 4 August 2007 05:12 (eighteen years ago)

Despite chortling to the Onion's mockery of the Aaron spinoff records and so on, I don't think I've ever actually heard "Aaron's Party" before. So this is basically "Groove Is In The Heart" for people born in 1990 or after? It's not so bad. "Come get it!" I like his little kid impression of Will Smith, it's endearing, and at the same time he's kind of OTM about some things. "Open house?!" - "Yeah, that's what the flyer said" - "I didn't make a flyer" - "Well, somebody did!"

Agreed with musically, though, the canned twist ending would really add even more "old school" to this. It's at least as good as Kriss Kross and probably a little bit better if I were being honest with myself.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, his "I Want Candy" cover is pretty good too. Either that or it's just getting really late and my judgment is addled. I will say it's kind of weird when he's like ten years old and it's established that "Candy" is the name of the girl, so he's saying he WANTS her... it's weird is all.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

So this is basically "Groove Is In The Heart" for people born in 1990 or after?

No.

More Popular Candidates:
Heaven - DJ Sammy (not kidding...last year someone played this in the journalism lab, and a nostalgia wave swept over the room. EVERYONE (15 people, probably) started dancing/singing. kinda surprised me)
The Rockafeller Skank - Fatboy Slim
Blue (Da Ba Dee) - Eiffel 65
One More Time - Daft Punk
Days Go By - Dirty Vegas
+ other obvious dance hits that i'm forgetting ("Starry Eyed Surprise"?)

It's at least as good as Kriss Kross and probably a little bit better if I were being honest with myself.

"Jump" >>> "Warm It Up Kris" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Aaron's Party"

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 06:05 (eighteen years ago)

Aaron Carter was better than Kris Kross. But then, that doesn't take much.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

Tape Store, I like a lot of the tracks on your list, but I feel like datewise they have to be stretching the point - "Rockafeller Skank" is what, 1998? I was born seven years before Aaron Carter and I was still just getting to the age where dance music held any appeal to me (and still a couple years from actually dancing to it, but that's my personal problem). Maybe I'm not giving nine-year-olds enough credit, but I feel like Aaron Carter seems more squarely in their demographic than "Blue" or "One More Time."

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

two years pass...

revive

Now That's What I Call A Pole, Saturday, 27 March 2010 03:31 (fifteen years ago)
