just found out that Superchunk are opening for the fuckin' Get Up Kids this summer. perverse, i tell you. almost as much as when Bad Religion opened for Blink 182 a couple years ago.

every once in a while some young success story gets the nerve and/or goodwill to take one of their elders (and/or inherent superiors) on tour as a support act. prime examples being in the early 70's when Miles Davis warmed up crowds for "no-playing motherfuckers" like the Steve Miller Band, or about a dozen of Pearl Jam's heroes that they've taken out on the road over the years.

what are some examples of this phenomenon that really got your goat? extra points for cases in which, a couple years earlier, the bill would have been reversed, a la Blink/Religion.

King Crimson opened for Tool last summer. As popular as Tool is, not to mention how incredible a band they are, I still felt embarrassed for KC....On second thought, who cares? They're only a bunch of prog- rock dinosaurs anyway. Fripp should know better.

Killing Joke opening for New Model Army at a Reading festival. If I'm not mistaken, NMA's Justin "Slade the Leveller" Sullivan actually mentioned how ass-backwards that was. Bless'im.

Killing Joke opening for the Pixies. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not knocking the Pixies, but c'mon - "Black Francis" was invariably still in high school when Killing Joke's first album came out.

What the fuck is up with Green Day opening for Blink 182? Can they really not draw their own crowd as large as their shite pop-punk descendants anymore?

I just heard something about how New Order are supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Dublin in summer. IS THERE NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD?

This doesn't quite fit the topic, but my friend went to a concert where the Calling opened for Lifehouse, which I found amusing. How does an opening band get an opening band? (These groups haven't had more than one big hit a piece, right?)

John Doe opened for Matthew Sweet. This weekend, Steve Wynn opens for Concrete Blonde. Pretenders opened for B52s. Iggy Pop opened for Pretenders.

And Sammy Hagar will open for David Lee Roth! - or if you prefer - David Lee Roth will open for Sammy Hagar!

Rheostatics opened for the Tragically Hip for a while on one tour...in fact, a lot of bands much more popular elsewhere in the world opened for the hip on their Another Roadside Attraction tours, including Blues Traveller, Matthew Sweet, Blues Traveller...

Pere Ubu opening for the Pixies. Then again, they shared the same keyboardist (Eric Drew Feldman).

Blech, the original example cited is just the worst; when I heard the Get Up Kids, I thought they sounded exactly like Superchunk, except boring and without tunes.

Mid-seventies USA: T-Rex opens for Three Dog Night. In terms of American popularity at the time, the billing made sense, but the relative intensity was WAY out of proportion. Funny to see half the house walk out before the headliner.

Hendrix opening for the Monkiees. Hands down, the most phuqked up bill in the history of modern music.
