have at it.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 30 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I'm biased because I've never liked The Game, but does anyone really feel like he should be at #3? Even for a list based primarily on sales and mainstream exposure, his last album really didn't do well enough to land him that spot.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

I must not be paying enough attention to Andre 3000???

Tape Store, Monday, 30 July 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

those MTV News dudes are way too much on Andre's jock for just a handful of remix verses, some better than others. a few weeks ago they did a 'report card' for all his recent guest appearances, and the LOWEST GRADE any of them got was A-

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

^
i think that speaks for contemporary rap more than MTV News to be honest.

i would have added bun b, clipse and nas and taken out 50, jones and the game. anyone who's read da drought 3 thread knows what i think about wayne being on the top of this list.

individual list from the mtv news people:http://www.mtv.com/bands/h/hip_hop_week/2007/hottest/index13.jhtml"> http://www.mtv.com/bands/h/hip_hop_week/2007/hottest/index13.jhtml

there are some wild ass placements there (rick ross at #3 really?) but after watching some of the videos, these people have a pretty decent working knowledge of rap.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

I like the FIXED version!!!

billstevejim, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

gotta remember that the criteria for this list was the last 6-12 months and was based heavily on stuff like guest appearances and collaborations, so it's gonna be weighted towards guys who were on every remix (i.e. the only reason fucking Jim Jones is on the list at all). what has E-40 even been on in the past year besides like that Lil Scrappy single and probably a few hyphy songs that never got heard nationally?

also if you're gonna herb yourself with The Clipse on the list, at least don't give them 2 individual spots.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

(xpost)

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

LOL at message board person calling me a "herb." For a list I blasted out in two seconds.

Fine

8. Clipse
9. Young Dro
10. I don't know, Fat Joe or Joell Ortiz or something

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

It's not a bad list for what it is. The Game doesn't belong, not does Jim Jones, but otherwise it's pretty okay.

The Brainwasher, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

er "^" to "billstevejim" not whiney.

also, off-topic, but whiney thnx for that silver daggers stream. really awesome

1. Lil Wayne
2. Clipse
3. T.I.
4. Kanye
5. Bun B
6. Ghostface
7. Andre 3000
8. Nas
9. Young Dro
10. Young Jeezy

or something like that... jay misses my list on the virtue of having to hear his wack-ass verse on "umbrella" like 864 times this summer.

also the second link above works (the one after the ">")

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

christ that list is abysmal.

poor hip hop.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

The funny thing about a list like this is that what they're really measuring is who has the most juice in the industry w/r/t radio play and sales, more than who can rhyme competently or made a solid album. But if they didn't limit it to rappers half the list would be singers and guys who are primarily producers (Swizz Beatz, T-Pain, Polow Da Don, R. Kelly, etc.) who have more influence on what's on the radio than almost every rapper out.

(xpost Whiney I'm not hating, Clipse are OK, but giving 2 pretty similiar rappers in the same group 20% of the list borders on Fennessey-level worship)

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost

Thanks so much for stopping by, JS! Lindstom and Prins Thomas are up to bat this week!

I'm mostly opposed to putting Jeezy on the list because he'd be the first one to tell you he's not an MC!

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

x-AiB, haha, I can see that.

I was just sticking with the "one rapper per spot" trope at the risk of becoming the victim of "YOU THINK PUSHA AND MALICE SOUND THE SAME, OMG!" net-attacks.

I meant to give Pusha T the edge for the "Duncecappin and kazooing" line alone.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

jay-z??? please

deej, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

good call on Dro though.

deej, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

i agree w/ alex re: the criteria here. one thing i will say from watching the discussions, is that most of the people seemed to confuse "putting out an album" with "putting out a good album." like they all agreed that Hip-Hop is Dead/T.I vs. T.I.P./Doctor's Advocate are great albums, rather than albums that just came out and may be good.

Jordan Sargent, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Jay-Z doesnt deserve to be on there but he'd have to drop 2 more albums even worse than Kingdom Come for him to lose an instant spot on a list like this. Really, to not have him in the top 5 is a huge indication of how far he's fallen lately.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Same w/ 50, his low placement (2 spots above Jones!) is kind of a hilarious slap in the face.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

as i was watching this on sunday afternoon i found myself marveling, even while drunk, that these guys were actually arguing who should come out ahead when it came to t.i. and the game.

strongohulkington, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

i was kind of half listening and someone was going on about how "he's released blah blah blah mixtapes this year and he's killed them all" and i though "oh, okay, wayne." and then...the game. the game??

strongohulkington, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Game does kill it, but just not in any way that's intriguing. As opposed to Kanye who's totally intriguing but rarely kills it.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, Consequence does better Kanye than Kanye these days.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

I know!! Weirdest part is that it's not like a bunch of the voters are from the west coast or any of them even put him higher than #4 or #5 on their individual lists. It's just like...really?

xpost I might agree, but...Consequence's album :(

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

how is jim jones even on there? mike jones>>>>jim jones.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Jim Jones was the lucky no-talent of '06, but Mike Jones was the lucky no-talent of '05, so JJ is at least more current.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

hey, at least mike put out one great album!

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand how Jim Jones beat out Santana. If they had to go for someone from Dipset Santana is the obvious one... even Cam'Rom would be more believable than Jim Jones (that whole "CURRRTISSSSSSS" thing sort of rose his stock a bit...)

The Brainwasher, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

mike also has one great single right now

deej, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

mr jones? or that 6-4z one?

The Brainwasher, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

Mike Jones is never coming out. He waited too long and his window closed.

Jimmy is really just a beneficiary of a lack of anyone else from Dipset doing anything notable in the past year. Does anyone thing his next album is going to have a single as big as his last one? Even that one didn't sell as much as the ones that had no hits! Juelz has done like 2 guest appearances outside of Diplomats records, but if he dropped again it'd probably be fairly big. Cam has got to be sick or addicted to something and we'll probably find out why he's been so quiet in a year or two when he dies or retires from rap or something.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

mike jones' current single sucks (if its the same one i saw the video for). paul walls album prob sucks too, if that single is anything to go by. wouldnt be surprised if slim thugs new material is mediocre too.

titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Mike has TWO great singles out right now.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

i was talking about 'my 6-4' which is great

deej, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

wouldnt be surprised if slim thugs new material is mediocre too.

-- titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, July 30, 2007 5:53 PM (5 minutes ago) Bookmark Link

this is also RONG, the boss hogg album is great

deej, Monday, 30 July 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

I personally like "My 6 4" and Paul Wall's single, but whatever cultural capital all those guys had outside Houston circa "Still Tippin'" is completely spent up now, they'll all be lucky if they ever drop major label albums again, which is the kind of shit this list is trying to measure. Only Cham and and maybe Bun B could realistically place on this list.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone heard Tum Tum?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

I like him OK but man that "Caprice Muzik" song is a dud.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

all i know from driving back and forth to jersey twice this weekend is that pop radio has anointed sean kingston the hottest mc in the game. oh and rap stations in delaware must have just gotten "pop lock and drop it"

strongohulkington, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

common andre 3000 and the game make ab no sense. the rest i can kinda understand.

ah the threada you find when ilm script goes to shit

jhøshea, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

hilarious fat kid sean kingston seconded

jhøshea, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

Common's debateable but when you add up token 'conscious' rapper + last album was best-selling of his career + about to drop new one = instant list real estate. Andre's a weird case because Outkast's last album was their first bomb and his latest solo album is a cartoon soundtrack with no rapping, so he's really being judged on like 5 guest verses, but as I said before, the MTV News folks are really stuck on those 5 songs.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

Andre 3000 totally deserves to be on here when he wants to rap, but the last thing I heard him on was on the "Walk It Out" remix and that was almost a year ago, right? (nb: keeping up with remixes and mixtapes is a pain in the ass, so I may well have missed a bunch)

milo z, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

milo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0JOGyFItDE

The Brainwasher, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

He's been on a bunch of stuff since then - Rich Boy remix, Lloyd remix, Devin The Dude album, UGK single. "Walk It Out" was just the first of all those. (xpost)

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

oh come to think of it, i like that one game track with the just blaze beat but mostly for the beat

strongohulkington, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

i liked the doctor's advocate because its a dre tribute that sounds like The Chronic 2006. Game even sounds kind of generic as a rapper like Dre. The songs where he starts crying are weak for this reason ... when he gets all explicit about it and it loses the concept
