i think i should pull out the Chicken Lips albums from a few years ago. at the time i wasn't feeling the dadrockness of it, but heard a song of theirs at a sushi joint last night (don't tell steve shasta i went on a sunday) and it really reminded me of Map of Africa.

i think that chicken lips album only came out last year!

that hatchback track 'white diamond' (and its much-hyped prins thomas remix) is pretty fine. hadn't heard of windsurf before now, though.

what's up with this new AMO single?

We just this morning took delivery of the new A Mountain of One single, 'Brown Piano' (for some reason this title cracks me up), and album, Collected Works (I know why that one cracks me up). The album just assembles the tracks which've already seen album release and slaps on a Blue NIle/Talk Talk-style sleeve, but the single, a new track, boasts a remix from Studio - an eleven-minute epic (of course), it has one of the most ominous, grand intros I've heard in a while, but as a whole it doesn't hold a candle to anything on their supernaturally good West Coast LP.

I'm scared to go back to that Chicken Lips record, remember some horrifying listening experiences last year.

Don't know how much we need this thread, as a lot has been discussed in the beardo thread.

I have seen "balearic" become one of the go-to adjectives for hip online shops these days, to describe anything that is vaguely neo-disco, downtempo, or trip-hop sounding. Anything that has an acoustic guitar also works. I think even the new Chemical Brothers album was saddled with the tag!

It was only so short ago that "balearic" usually meant smooth jazz/adult contemporary music, or was something you'd find on an Ibiza comp. I can see many people get badly burned (a la Italo Disco, Ryan Paris/Radiorama does not sound like Mixed Up In the Hague) if this new flavor continues to grow.

I mean, how far are we from Todd Terje releasing instrumental edits of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game"!

Yeah this is almost off-putting to read. It surely means "y'know, it's got a rhythm track and it's a bit cruisy, but it's not scary or anything! nothing too experimental!"

And yeah I'm imagining the most awesome awesome edit of "Wicked Game" right now. Not that the song needs an edit to be fabulous.

Almost two years old, but the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas LP goes here too. I almost feel like they should have released it under a different moniker and then went ahead and released the 12" versions as themselves. Its not a dance record at all.

mm, it sounds kind of lame (the word 'beat' in a genre name generally sounds lame and pseudy to me?). 'Balearic house' i've seen used, though.

"Lullabye" I can totally see if it's the Extended Mix on Mixed Up - I've put that on quite a few balearic-y "Back to Mine" style comps I've made.

ftr karl I know you said on the other thread I hate balearic but honestly I was all over the (fine, proggier end of the) mid-00s balearic wave - studio, kate bush's aerial, lindstrom, strategy etc - there was a real sense of momentum and build to that stuff at its best, and we're entering the 20-years-later zone so i'm expecting grand-scale balearic revenance soon

new Double Geography album Open Water out today

Double Geography aka Duncan Thornley (one half of Weird Weather and studio engineer at MAP Studios), following the success of his debut album “The Indoor Gardener” (also on Invisible Inc) had sent Invisible Inc label boss GK Machine demos of his second and third album, which the label reluctantly declined on the basis that the music didn't sound quite right for the label. However, this fourth studio album fits the bill perfectly.

Man I'm curious what those other two albums sound like.
