Every Japanese tech (or house) record I've heard sounds GREAT to me. Especially liking Segeke and Japanese Synchro-System.
So what do you think?

released around the same time as Panasonic's Vakio and about as extreme. ryoji ikeda's +/- came out a year later and took it a step further and that's the one most people remember, but the RIOU stuff still had one foot in the Detroit / Jeff Mills Waveform Transmissions Vol. 1 camp, not quite as cerebral.
sometimes I think it's weird he isn't mentioned as often as Ikeda / Panasonic / Pole etc. but the later full-lengths had some filler so I guess maybe people just heard the wrong ones, but To-To still sounds incredible

Search: Karaokejack By Takkyu Ishino (great uptempo house + some electropop weirdness).
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

destroy: Fumyia Tanaka? despite kickstarting a lot of interest in the genre out there
― blunt, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)
search this release tho
― blunt, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)
I actually like Tanaka, especially his Unknown Possibility records on Tresor. Sometimes I think my favorite hard techno producer is DJ Shufflemaster, so if you like Surgeon, I would most definitely take a listen to Shufflemaster's Geylang.
― Jena, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)
i dig me some surgeon. hmm.

I think the stuff Susumu Yokota has released under his own name is considered "downtempo" or something, but Fallen Angel by Prism (aka Yokota) is a beautiful and smooth little house album.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 2 August 2007 09:19 (eighteen years ago)
God yes, I picked Fallen Angel from my record shelf for the first time in years, and I'm listening to it now... I'd forgotten how good this is, the perfect midpoint between house melodism and stripped-down minimalism.

Not techno per se, but everything Hiroshi Watanabe produced is incredible (i.e. Kaito, 32 Project, Quadra, etc.)
― Mr. Goodman, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 17:04 (eighteen years ago)
plz to recommend some japanese minimal techno from the 90s that sounds like sahko/plus 8/axis etc?

I guess Fumiya Tanaka is a pretty choice obvious choice, and was always too dry and aggressive for me to ever actually enjoy, but...

some really great suggestions ITT
let me just point out how incredible Denki Groove's VOXXX is. released in 2000 (which is kind of the year that techno stopped evolving), it's really a great look back at 25-some years of electronic music

I do like some of this here, but i guess i'm looking more for technopop type stuff, maybe this isn't exactly the right thread
― frogbs, Thursday, 21 June 2012 19:10 (thirteen years ago)
You would think the Japanese would/should dominate techno (and electronic music), to paraphrase a Gary Busey movie quote, 'they got half the records and all the synths.'
― earlnash, Thursday, 21 June 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)
oh i don't know about that, aren't most synths and drum machines from other places?
― the late great, Friday, 22 June 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)
this is a really broad topic that I really have no idea how to begin to interact with although I want to since I'm balls deep into japanese electronic music haha
here's a list of nerd/hard/break/whatevercore acts I'd like to either hear more from or hear from again at all that I was going to post on another forum but I guess I'm not allowed to talk on there anymore.

i bought the boogiepop phantom soundtrack in high school bc i was sort of obsessed with the theme song from the show. it totally does not include the theme song. it is two discs of completely haunted gorgeous mid-'90s techno? (the soundtrack came out in 2002 so idk.) i've never met anyone who's also heard this record. it's out of print but available for $3 from a third-party seller at amazon.
