Best supergroup

“In the late 1960s, the term supergroup was coined to describe music groups composed of members who had already achieved fame or respect in other groups or as individual artists. The term as correctly applied refers to the architecture of the group, not the achievements. Supergroups (of the strict definition) tend to be short-lived, perhaps because of the natural conflict of egos between established stars. Additionally, supergroups are often formed as side projects that are not intended to be permanent. In jazz, although it is more common for famous artists to play together, the term is rarely used.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supergroup

I’ve tried to make this bands who seem to have been formed for the express intention of pooling fanbases rather than for artistic reasons. That’s why there’s so much dodgy AOR, and why I didn’t include The Glove, Tomahawk et al (although I did include The Highwaymen and The Breeders for the sake of variety). I also didn’t include supergroups that never got anywhere or that I’d never heard of, so sadly there’s no Tipton, Entwistle & Powell. Zwan votes count double for having a member known only for being in another supergroup.

Mahavishnu Orchestra is the only one that does what it says on the tin.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

the breeders win

cream and c, s, n & y can battle it out for a distant second place

No Pentangle no credibility.

IS anyone actually going to (non-ironically) vote for Audioslave?

nathalie, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

No New Pornographers?

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

The Wilburys, obviously.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

is anyone actually going TO (non-ironically) vote for Audioslave?

:)

new pornographers is a quintessental example of a supergroup, yes, but matt or anyone else who compiles a list like this is always going to miss out on something.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

Plastic Ono band, no contest, at least among the groups I've heard on that list. Can't say I've heard Mahavishnu, though I've had someone with great music taste recommend them to me.

But yea, AOR supergroups for the most part tend to be pretty lame.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I’ve tried to make this bands who seem to have been formed for the express intention of pooling fanbases rather than for artistic reasons.

Was that the case with the New Pornographers though? To me Audioslave is the quintessental example of a supergroup - formed by management and lawyers as a marriage of convenience between marketable assets.

Matt #2, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Take a look through the list on wikipedia, there's some doozies on there.

Matt #2, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

I'm tempted to say Asia because they probably have the best song of any band on this list, but the best band is probably Blind Faith. I have a weak spot for Stevie Winwood...it's one of the few things my wife and I have in common.

pj, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Mahavishnu Orchestra is the best example of great musicians getting together and ROCKING THE FUCK OUT while still being good on this list BY FAR.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

No PentangleOctober Faction no credibility.

Jon Lewis, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

They dispersed the fanbases.

Down??? Damn Yankees? Good god that shit sucks.

I'm going Mahavishnu

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

I still wish the rhythm section of the Beatles would form a supergroup with the rhythm-section-less Who.

dad a, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Platic Ono Band hands down - altho is it really a supergroup when everyone involved was essentially from one band...?

Whither the Tony Williams Lifetime (the lineup on Turn It Over)?

Sheesh, they could leave Mahavishnu with numerous weeping sores without half-trying.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

but then Tony Williams ruins it by singing

I’ve tried to make this bands who seem to have been formed for the express intention of pooling fanbases rather than for artistic reasons.

Blind Faith, yes (although I would argue that it wouldn't have to be either/or in their case), but Cream? Baker and Bruce were definitely exceptional and probably well-known in certain circles in the early 60s but I doubt the fanbase of the Graham Bond Organization was formidable enough to be raison d'etre behind Clapton's recruitment of the two.

musically, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

In such a setting, I am voting for ELP.

The Raconteurs are missing in the poll btw.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

Also, what made Plastic Ono Band a "supergroup" while Wings weren't?

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

TEH JASS COMPUZERS ORCHESTRE

ian, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

If you put Cream in this list, shouldn't Zep be included? Did Baker and Bruce have appreciable fanbases as such?

Veronica Moser, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I just put Cream in there because I wanted, in some miniscule way, to belittle Eric Clapton by including 2 of his bands. Bloomfield / Kooper / Stills should have been included, yes. I really want to hear Tipton, Entwistle & Powell.

Matt #2, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

Clapton of the 60s is way different than the Clapton of today. The Clapton of the 60s quit the Yardbirds because they were too pop ffs. I'd be inclined to think that he wasn't being completely mercenary back then.

musically, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

Once aprick, always a prick. But yeah you're probably right.

Matt #2, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Say what you will, but Clapton was a bad motherfucker back then. Sure, he's gone on to such simp as "Change the World" and "My Father's Eyes," but he was some heavy, heavy shit with Cream. SWLABR? Tales of Brave Ulysses? WHITE ROOM?!?!?!?!

Cream. Some others good, none as good.

B.L.A.M., Tuesday, 31 July 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Whither the Tony Williams Lifetime (the lineup on Turn It Over)?

Sheesh, they could leave Mahavishnu with numerous weeping sores without half-trying.

The Tony Williams Lifetimeis indeed incredible, and Tony is my favorite drummer ever, but I have to respectfully disagree. I'm not sure which qualities you're basing that assessment on, but to sincerely make the argument that Lifetime somehow leaves Billy Cobham-era Mahavishnu cowering in the corner is pretty laughable. Personal taste is personal taste, but . . .
Lifetime and Mahavishnu, for me, are fusion/jazz-rock beasts (pardon me) of a somewhat different nature, though both were intense; however, I haven't heard a band that I think is more startling (at times) than The Mahavishnu Orchestra (obviously, "intense" is not the only thing of worth with those groups -- just one parallel). Like, when the full band plays (the part that seems to be) the head, in jazz terms, of "Dream" from The Lost Trident Sessions, the combination of finesse and power is almost frightening to me. Various bars that The Mahavishnu Orchestra raised have been raised again and again, but I've really never heard another band that combines the aforementioned elements in such a devastating way. But that's me.

Still, I have a hard time voting for Mahavishnu over The Breeders, to name one, so I won't.

And I, too, must say I disagree with the pooling fanbases criterion, considering some of the groups included in the poll.

betelgeuse, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

Think of Mahavishnu as the token jazz entry.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

no humble pie,no new pornographers i mean, come on...

Zeno, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

Totally Down. Best thing Phil Anselmo has ever been involved in, and if it isn't the best thing for the rest of the members, it's only because their main projects are so damn good (except for Crowbar).

zeus, Thursday, 2 August 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

I just put Cream in there because I wanted, in some miniscule way, to belittle Eric Clapton by including 2 of his bands.

But wait: There's 3 of his bands up there! He was part of the original Plastic Ono (quote unquote) Band. Clapton & Lennon in a single band is really the only reason they'd be considered a supergroup in the first place. And he only played on the one (live) album, and that album is easily the least super of any record bearing the POB moniker, I'm overlooking it entirely. So, another easy for Mahavishnu here, altho there's certainly quite a few bands up there that have done worthwhile work.

[And I really don't wanna compare Lifetime with Mahavishnu: Love 'em both, and think they sound virtually nothing alike.]

Geir Hongro gets to vote 11 times?! Disappointing showing for The Highwaymen there. Poor old Tabla Beat Science.

Geir Hongro gets to vote 11 times?!

Nope. ELP only got two votes. :)

If not for them, I would have picked the Wilburys though. Which would have meant they'd have won.
