Hello, I Love Music. Long time no see.
I just got a birthday gift certificate for a hundred bucks at the local cool record store, so I can buy a few new records guilt-free (I have a kid now, so I can't really go splurge on wax like I used to).
What are 2 or 3 records from the past couple of years that I really should not miss.
Please feel free to ridicule and advise, but here's some of what I'm thinking about getting... haven't heard - but am intrigued - by all of these:
Boris - Pink The Boredoms - Super Roots 7 Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury King Khan & BBQ - What's For Dinner Neil Young - Live At Massey Hall 1971 Peter, Bjorn & John - Writer's Block Jarvis Cocker & Steve Mackey - The Trip Richard Hawley - Coles Corner Electralane - ?

I really love the Neil Young and Crazy Horse live in 1970, myself. I don't know how to recommend anything else, though. My favorite record of this year is probably kind of hard to find at this point (Pink Reason, Cleaning the Mirror).

x-post did you see that boredoms show at the phoenix, slocki? (you're in toronto if i recall correctly?) it was so great.
― fritz, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:05 (eighteen years ago)
I'd suggest the newer King Khan record with the Shrines (What It Is?!) instead, but thats just me.

yeah, i'm curious about that too but I really liked BBQ + KK earlier stuff a lot more than the 1st KK + shrines - but this new one does sound interesting

― s1ocki, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, so fun. everyone was walking out of that Boredoms show with huge raver smiles... and of course Now gave it a terrible review.
― fritz, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)
i know my friends from a certain competing paper were complaining about that!! i was right at the front. great times. did you watch that badn that pulled up and played in their van?
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

Boris's "Pink" is great
― Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)
Do you like pop? Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds is GREAT...my favorite album of the past several years...maybe of the millenium.
― Tape Store, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)
xposts:
i do like pop and my wife has that record and I like it pretty well, but his first one still feels more fun to me
sorry, shakey - I don't think there is a vinyl version of the Massey show...
xpost to slocki: yeah, that was rosazia. that was the perfect capper. apparently they'd been bumped from the bill because boredoms wouldn't let another band set up on stage before they played - which kinda makes sense given their set-up. the hit & run van show was cooler than a regular opening slot anyway.
― fritz, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)
Ah. Have you tried Robyn yet?
― Tape Store, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)
Or Beyonce? The Knife?
― Tape Store, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)
Coles Corner is great. You won't be disappointed.

Coles Corner is great.
and Pink is sweet too. It's pretty ferocious. Rainbow is calmer if you would be into dat kinda schtuff.

coupla centavos dylan- modern times is a suggestion for ya (only 'cause Neil makes me think of Blob). That Massey Hall is v. nice, but i've been really going back to MT a lot.
and that Clipse is excellent, btw.

Get some reggaeton.
― Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks to all for the suggestions - I'm hoping to get to the record store today if I can sneak out of work early. Please keep the suggestions coming...
Tape Store - Yeah, I've heard Robyn (thought Konichiwa Bitches was funny, but liked Annie more), Beyonce (love her, but no need to go out and buy a record right now for me) and The Knife (like the Jose Gonzalez version more, but yes, amazing pop song)...
I'm a little buirned out on Dylan and The Hold Steady - but I should really give those new records a chance. Feels a bit like a homework assignment to me right now though.
I downloaded a pile of Reggaeton a couple of summers ago, is there a cood comp of current stuff out now? I usually get those "Strictly The Best" Dancehall comps every so often, I remember seeing some good Reggaeton ones like those.

won't make it out until the weekend, so you still have a chance to sway me.
thank you for your kind indulgence.

Cole's Corner thirded. A fantastic album.
Clipse is good too.
― righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 2 August 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)
Cole's Corner is killing me. Love it. Thanks.
― fritz, Saturday, 4 August 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)
That's great! Glad you like it. Richard Hawley has a new disc being released later this year. The song from it posted on his MySpace page is equal to the Coles Corner material, so you may want to check out the new disc, too.

I bet there is or will be a vinyl edition of the Neil record, but it'll be some ludicrously expensive audiophile deal.
― President Evil, Saturday, 4 August 2007 08:52 (eighteen years ago)
Chiming in again for Boris and Clipse. Those records both slay.

Fritz, I don't know. Can't really recommend any recent compilations. If you don't already have it in download form, you might want to get Wisin y Yandel's P'al Mundo (preferably the Deluxe edition which throws in some other actually good tracks), but that might be too much of the same thing. (It does have a crazy number of really good songs though.) Luny Tunes's Los Benjamins is pretty good, and is a collaboration with lots of different people.
(In a totally different direction, I would also recommend Tokyo Jihen's Adult, but you aren't going to find that except as a pricey import, and you probably aren't going to find it in a store at all. Great album though.)
