Anyway, I vote Kelly Clarkson because she has yet to sing a song written by Linda Perry (as far as I know). Also, I want to marry her.

3. Has started writing her own songs now

Avril Lavigne has made better music than both of them though.

I justify my Kelly preference using two points

A) I like "Since U Been Gone" better than anything Pink has ever done.
B) Aesthetics

There may have been a few decent acts coming out of Pop Idol (Margaret Berger...), but mostly the entire idea is a very bad idea.

And, yes, it is a reality series or they wouldn't have been devoting so much time to following the acts while they live together.

Back during the first few seasons of AI they did have some throwaway footage of the contestants hanging in their mansion, but it was more just to fill the time during the results show rather than a real part of the show. It was no Big Brother, surely.

Anyway, there's no halfway-decent reason why being a reality show contestant should have any bearing on how good/bad a musical act is.

kelly, though "there you go" and "you make me sick" can def contend with kelly's best singles.
pink's never had an album peak inside the US top 5...

I am 100% certain that "There You Go" and "Most Girls" were released before "You Make Me Sick" and "A Moment Like This" and "Miss Independent" were released before "Since U Been Gone".

Pink and Kelly Clarkson are the same genre (teenybopper punk-pop). Herman's Hermits and Genesis surely aren't, even though Genesis' Bee Gees-like flop debut may have a slight similarity with Herman's Hermits (at their best).

Then, I guess you wouldn't get much out of teen pop in general either.

Avril Lavigne and Pink were the best thing that happened to teenpop in a while, because they removed R&B from teenpop's influences and replaced it with powerpop.

"Don't Let Me Get Me" is not power-pop.

It's not that I don't get much out of teen pop, it's that I don't get that much out of teens.

"Don't Let Me Get Me" is a mixture of power-pop and boy/girl bands.

If you don't like "R&B influences" in teen pop, then that would pretty much decide it for you, 'cause Clarkson's pretty much an R&B style singer, and Pink's nowhere near as good on the R&B side (of which she has a fair amount, too).

Clarkson also seems much more likable, which could be a point in her favor or against her, depending. As a personality, she has broader, more anodyne appeal than Pink. And both are pretty much about being personalities rather than singers . . .

wow, that Kelly version of "Back Up The Mountain" is fucking awesome. She isn't really served well by the Top-40 format.

xpost: Fair point, but remember that Geir is incapable of comprehending anything related to R&B.

Both of them have hellaciously good singing skills that they almost never utilize due either to overwork, fatigue or laziness.

I like them both well enough though I haven't heard 'My December' or whatever it's called, but I have to give it to Clarkson's voice which just seems a more natural fit for me, somehow.
