(predictable me answer): Raining Blood

latebloomer, Thursday, 2 August 2007 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I was gonna say the obvious answer, "A Day In The Life," can't really be fucked with

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 2 August 2007 00:56 (sixteen years ago) link

"View From A Hill" is perfect. Those guitars, that synth, those DRUMS. I crank my vinyl copy up in my basement and it gives me goosebumps.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 2 August 2007 00:57 (sixteen years ago) link

(and the bass and the tambourine obv.)

Curt1s is 100% OTM with this thread. "View From A Hill" is absolutely gorgeous.

"Wealth" is pretty great.

Drooone, Thursday, 2 August 2007 01:19 (sixteen years ago) link

"Donimo" by the Cocteaus is a pretty awesomely ecstatic and HUGE album-closer for "Treasure".

ummmm i don't know this is hard

Kate Bush The Dreaming Get Out Of My House is kindo f hard to beat

and this is kinda embarrassing but Yes Anastasia off Tori's Under The Pink is really magnificent.

My vote goes to "I am the Resurrection'

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 03:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Dive for yer Memory is also a good one.

Drooone, Thursday, 2 August 2007 03:18 (sixteen years ago) link

some of these are obvious, but:
- beatles, "tomorrow never knows" (revolver)
- who, "won't get fooled again" (who's next -- yeah, it's an overplayed fm staple, so instead listen to it like it's the miles davis quintet circa 1968 and it all makes a different kind of sense. it's what lifetime were always groping towards)
- funkadelic, "eulogy and light" (free your mind)
- marvin gaye, "inner city blues" (what's going on)
- mc5, "skunk" (high time)
- yo la tengo, "i heard you looking" (painful)
- sly & the family stone, "thank you for talkin' to me africa" (there's a riot goin' on)
- jay-z, "my first song" (the black album)

It's predictable, but I'll say The Tourist.

nate woolls, Thursday, 2 August 2007 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I second "Raining Blood", but some of my other favorites are "The Swimmer" and "Mass Transit Railway" (since we aren't naming albums or groups apparently).

rockapads, Thursday, 2 August 2007 07:58 (sixteen years ago) link

and as i said on the other thread:

omfg i've been singing the singy bit of merry go bye-bye to myself SO MUCH recently. i kinda wish they made a whole song of it, but deep down i know it's better served by the noize-freak excursion

my actual answer to this thread would be...erm...oh come on, there's about 35 i can't choose between! my current favourite is foetus' "kreibabe", however, so i will nominate that.

two Radiohead closers mentioned and no "Motion Picture Soundtrack"? "Here Comes a Regular" over "Answering Machine"? u mad ILM

other random ones that come to mind: "West of the Fields", "Fillmore Jive", "The Wild Kindness", "Colors" (dunno how much album-closer counts for on a two-track album but whatever), "Slim Slow Slider", "Runeii", "Vittorio E." (this album is magick)

bernard snowy, Thursday, 2 August 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Not too keen on Motion Picture Soundtrack. Think it's the worst song on Kid A.

Roxy Music - "Just Another High" on Siren
Sparks - "Miss The Start, Miss The End" on Indiscreet
Talking Heads - The Overload on Remain in Light
Ian Dury - "Blackmail Man" on New Boots and Panties

Threatens to leap right off the turntable, that last one...

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, and "Information Overload" by Caveman Shoestore. The CD goes into a repeating locked groove at the end for about 5 minutes.

Dan Peterson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Let me focus on the 60s / early 70s. Best album closer (and life closer in some cases):

1. Day in the Life, Beatles.
2. You Can't Always, Stones.
3. In My Hour of Darkness, Parsons.
4. Riders on the Storm, Doors.

In that order.

steely dan - king of the world/third world man (both work really well in the context of the albums that they cap off)

Thank the Lord you mentioned this, alex. I thought I was going to have to throw a tantrum.

(also I like "Soul Survivor," "All Apologies," the loud version of "Keep On Rockin in the Free World" and "I'm in Love With a Girl." And does "Leave the Capitol" count?)

xtc - complicated game

ciderpress, Friday, 27 June 2008 22:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Let's See What Else:

I def. second "Eulogy and Light" (super-creepy) and "When the Levee Breaks," along with "A Day in the Life..." (but, really, who doesn't second that one?)

"L.A. Blues is great, tho apparently it lacks compared to the live version.

"You Set the Scene" is great. I also like "And More" from Love's first album, for personal reasons.

Surprised "Bike" hasn't gotten any love yet.

Ditto for "Ambulance Blues." Also, "Last Dance" (from Time Fades Away) is pretty damn cool: CSN has never sounded so raw & ragged, perhaps bcz Neil insists on pummelling them with the riff. Great freaky rock moment.

It hasn't been mentioned (I don't think) but no list fultimate classic-rock album closers is complete without "Ramble Tamble."

I believe the original Mirror Man album ends with "Kandy Korn," which is an awesome song. (For that matter, "Apes-Ma" wraps up Shiny Beast on an impossibly poignant note.)

"Brick is Red" "Havalina" "She Brings The Rain" "Adventures Close to Home": none of these would belong on a list of greatest album closers ever, but all are v. good, so shout-outs to them all.

"Sweet Shine" and "Bouncing Round the Room" are even better. Verging on transcendence, particularly "Bouncing" which is the greatest song that Paul Simon never wrote.

And nothing against "You're Not an Airplane"--it does the job--but "Peep-hole would've made a fantastic closer for Bee Thousand. it has to be one of the loveliest songs to ever clock in under a minute.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 28 June 2008 00:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Speaking of GbV, the one-two punch of "Mute Superstar" and "Bomb in the Beehive" that closes Mag Earwig! is one of my favorite endings to an album ever. If I have to pick a single song...maybe "Jimmy Tomorrow" from the Waitresses' debut? "Complicated Game" is a pretty strong contender too.
