Recommend me some stoner metal?

I feel like I'm casting about blindly— I want to listen to something that's darker and weirder than Kyuss but not quite to the Gravitar noise level. And I want stuff that's definitely more out of the metal millieu than bands like Wolfmother. And I figured that if there was anywhere to ask to get me past the reflexive "Monster Magnet" (who I like, but I'd like to find something a little weirder and more sludgy) and "Queens of the Stone Age" (who I think are kinda boring), it would be here.

I did really like the Mr. Wonka?! "Codeine Rock" that I saw some Chuck Eddy review of, and would love more stuff down that road.

A. Begrand, Thursday, 2 August 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Sleep is quintessential stoner metal, but in my opinion, they ain't too good. Even their 52 minute epic bullshit album Jerusalem which got a lot of attention for being 52 minutes long and for being 'suppressed' by their record company is interminably boring. Their best song, "Dragonaut," is basically a carbon copy of a Black Sabbath song ("Lord of This World").

Maybe you'd like Black Sabbath.

And that's coming from a non-smoker!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

I find it quite dull. The kind of stuff they play on the loudspeakers in a slave galley while you're hoping for some major organ to fail.

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Haha. I shoulda added all the bands I already know and like, but got called away by work.

I like Boris a lot. Hawkwind's OK, but I have a hard time separating the wheat from the chaff with them, and generally like the live boots I have much more than the regular albums. They're more rock than metal though. I like Black Sabbath and The Melvins already.

I don't like Tool very much, as I kinda find 'em wanky-in-a-bad-way, instead of the wanky-in-a-good-way of most stoner metal I've heard.

Corrupted
Bongkiller

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 2 August 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like we've done this before. Nonetheless:

Clutch
Throttlerod
Alabama Thunder Pussy
Fu Manchu
Corrosion of Conformity (Deliverance and later)
Crowbar
down
Fireball Ministry
the Obsessed
the Hidden Hand
High On Fire
Nebula
Nova Driver

Some of the more obvious stuff, anyway. And yes, it's to varying degrees of metal, but so be it.

I call them Hipster Metal too! So they should go in a thread with hipster metal. Stoner metal smells worse. And has less of those ear hoop thingies.

but really just pick up those new electric wizard reissues.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

for a start.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

Here's a list with some album descriptions from back when I still cared about the genre. Surprisingly, they're all still on my shelves. I'd toss Tummler who are true barrel-scrapers. However, the genre loves its barrel-scrapings and for the true blue fan there's much to listen to, there being more people in stoner rock bands than there are actually fans for it.

Stoner Dozen

Gorge, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

That Cathedral record is pretty freaking awesome. I prefer the first Novadriver record, though. And Lunar Womb.

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, yeah, I saw Orange Goblin and they were really fun. Not so much a fan of the Alabama Thunderpussy (or Jucifer, before that's recommended).

And I searched the threads for stoner and metal and didn't see anything!

I got a Novadriver promo a while ago and it started really well, but fell off so much in the second half that I didn't bother to review it. Now I wonder what I did with it.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

electric wizard's dopethrone is dope
yob's elaborations of carbon is elaborate
toadliquor's the hortator's lament is unrelenting

if you think monster magnet isn't weird and sludgy you're not listening to the right stuff. like the demo version of "tab". I just got a monster magnet 25 live show from '92, one hour of instrumental hooey. it is supreme.

and I would like to put in a good word for kilslug and upsidedown cross.

Edward III, Friday, 3 August 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Really, and in my limited knowledge, the two essential stoner classics are Electric Wizard's "Dopethrone" and Kyuss's "Welcome To Sky Valley", although the latter is arguably more rock than metal, but it still rocks like the most rockingest thing on Earth.

the next grozart, Friday, 3 August 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

More rock than metal. Eesh.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

I used to love Monster Magnet but I can't listen to them any more for some reason.

the next grozart, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

I couldn't get into their last album at all.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

I can't listen to most of what they did after 1992.

Edward III, Friday, 3 August 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

cock soup

Yeah, I don't get the hate for the Sword. Is it that they're from Austin, so they can't be real heshers or something? I love that album.

bendy, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

Austin or the concept of real/not real "heshers" had nothing to do with it. Tastes vary.

Gorge, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I like/love pretty much everything Monster Magnet have ever done, although 25... Tab freaks me out. The last album has some fantastic songs on it, especially "Master of Light."

I actually have that Sword album, and it's okay. I just think that they're incredibly overrated. The songs are okay, but not very memorable, the vocalist is extremely monotonous, and they aren't doing anything particularly new or interesting. It's like, why listen to The Sword when you can go listen to Cathedral?

Jeff Treppel, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

i don't hate the sword. i've barely even heard them. i was just trying to rile alex for some reason. mission accomplished!

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Bought Sleep's Holy Mountain after having them recommended. Really like it, but would love something with more psychedelic weirdness (like, a dub/echoed version would be exactly the balm my soul needs now).

Sorry to keep being so difficult. It's just that everything I hear leaves me going "This is really great! I wonder if there's anything else that's like this, but a little more X?"

I eat cannibals, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Dopesmoker is epic. Most of the other stoner metal I've heard is a huge disappointment in comparison.

I'd look at the shoegaze metal thread, there's some crossover that you might like. Really, really love The Angelic Process tracks I've heard, they're heavy and hypnotic like Sleep.

milo z, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

this is my favorite album of the month. very heavy. very psychedelic. very noisy. and very dub/echoed out. from Israel.

http://www.myspace.com/graveinthesky

more "doom" than "stoner", but whatever.

sounds like shit on myspace of course. the album itself is very very LOUD (as in, the cd itself is just mixed really loud or whatever, but not in a horrible way.) and i love how it sounds.

scott seward, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

are all their songs named after movies? (I hope so)

milo z, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

yes. all the lyrics are just dialogue from movies. i never thought my fave song of the month would be entitled "Donnie Darko", but there you have it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

or to be more accurate: all the lyrics in their songs come from dvd subtitles.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Dopesmoker isn't so much "epic" as it is "long".

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Scott, I will defff buy that album.
awesomeness. Thanks.

Drooone, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

If people like more dubby psychedelic stoner/doom stuff, the last few Ufomammut albums have been great. Recently picked up Los Natas "Corsario Negro" from a few years back. Primo South American stoner jams.

On the less heavy but still rockin' end of the spectrum last year's Sasquatch record "II" is riff-tastic (I talk like this in real life too - my friends laugh at me :/), and the Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound record is fun retro-psyche jams.

Anybody but me like Mammatus?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

Mammutus is awesome, but I really didn't like the Coast Explodes thing. I saw them with Residual Echoes here in SF and it was a great show. Also check out Residual Echoes.

Another band I'm surprised I haven't seen her yet is UFOMammut. Maybe they are more doom, but to me they belong right along-side the best Electric Wizard stuff.

rockapads, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

5ive is also worth checking out.

i've only heard the earthless cover of "cherry red." hella literal interpretation, dudes. i don't know why they bothered.

assemble head = greatness. i guess instead of thinking quicksilver i thought elevators, though, the kinda hot, dusty twang to the guitars.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

All right, pimping of Earthless for over a year, not cost effective. And it's a cruel trick to recommend newbies stumble into Jerusalem or Dopesmoker, like recommending Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music as an introduction to hard rock.

Gorge, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:49 (eighteen years ago)

Fuckin' Ay, why don't tyros just buy the James Gang's "Rides Again." Stoner metal in 2007 = pour a bucket of mud on my head because it feels good when you stop.

Gorge, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:53 (eighteen years ago)

High on Fire's "Surrounded by Thieves" & some Cathedral, maybe the singles comp, are good starting points

in fact I think I'll listen to that Cathedral right now

J0hn D., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:54 (eighteen years ago)

Cathedral, seconded. Lee Dorian tries hard, often successfully, to entertain.

Gorge, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

my favourites include kyuss (permanently lodged in the 'too obvious' category), electric wizard, cathedral, clutch, and later coc (as jeff suggested upthread)

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

oh wait, and trouble (do they count?) - good to listen to when stoned in any case

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)

"All right, pimping of Earthless for over a year, not cost effective."

so sorry that i still remember the record and still like it, george! aren't you the one who says that people pimp for stuff for a couple of weeks and then forget about them?

it's still a good album. sorry the songs are too long for you!

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:26 (eighteen years ago)

I like the Sword album quite a bit, and have never made it all the way through a Cathedral song. I'd rather listen to Witchfinder General than Cathedral.

unperson, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:28 (eighteen years ago)

I 4th or 5th Ufomammut! Especially that new one with lento. That's damn good.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

I like the earlier Earthless album - "Sonic Prayer", if I remember correctly - better than their latest. The latest sounds more like two takes of the same thing (plus a complete aping on the cover) v. two different songs.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)
