Why have several threads, when you can have just one?
1. In The Who's "Who Are You," during the second or third chorus, do I hear correctly the words 'who da fuck are you?' and how has this possibly escaped the censors on the radio all these years?

1. RE: it is. somehow the censors never noticed it. to this day, it's not censored on radio.

unbefuckinlievable. I guess that was before lyric sheets and before the threat of satanic metal porn rap scariness.

i asked this elsewhere but got no answer: what kind of instrument makes that kind of monkey "ooh-ahh" sound in latin music and occasionally disco and stuff. you know the sound.

Post youtube with time of specific instance of ooh-ahh

Is that the cuica you're thinking of? Samba drum, has a wet flap and rod contraption that makes a sound like ... like scrubbing something squeaky clean.

(will leave you feeling significantly more enlightened about the history, construction, sound, and social relevance of the cuica than you ever expected to become today)

There are a lot of songs that get a pass on profanity: "Who Are You", "Money" by Pink Floyd. "Start Me Up" and "You Shook Me" featuring lyrics about cum. Lou Reed talking about giving head in "Walk on the Wild Side".
I used to work for a classic rock station that promoted the fact that it was "family friendly" and all the bad words were gone. I never had to do the bowdlerizing, but it would've wounded my soul if I had done so.
I really wish I knew what creme1 was talking about. Are there any samples of cuica that aren't .rm?

do I hear correctly the words 'who da fuck are you?' and how has this possibly escaped the censors on the radio all these years?
there is actually a censored version ("who the hell are you?") that was a radio-only edit in 1978. it's rather hard to find these days, so classic rock stations just play the regular version and let it slide. ditto pink floyd's "money" ("goody-good bull-blank"), steve miller's "jet airliner" ("funky chicks goin' down in the city"), and jethro tull's "locomotive breath" ("kick in the fun").
i've seen old vinyl copies of who are you with a warning sticker about possibly "objectionable" lyrics.

This is probably something I should know, but don't.
What's the source of that ever-ubiquitous sample that's common in early house and hip hop and what have you, which I think may be James Brown, but goes "whoo!. . . yeah!" If you don't know what I mean, it can be heard here
Again, should be really obvious, but I've never had any idea what it is.
― mehlt, Friday, 3 August 2007 02:26 (seventeen years ago) link
Lyn Collins, Think. She sang backup for James Brown.

A song with that cuica thing is Adeus Maria Fulo by Os Mutantes. Unless it's just someone rubbing a balloon or something.

"funky chicks goin' down in the city"
that's a better line than the original!
