ok I admit it I just created this poll to vote for Head East

Johnny Hotcox, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

Right now I'm partial to "Love Hurts" at the middle school/YMCA dance.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:29 (eighteen years ago)

Rock & Roll All Nite is my overall favorite tbh, it's been too long since I've watched it (VCR broke, haven't got around to the DVD) to remember the contexts of each song in the film - what scene was Kiss in?

marmotwolof, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

goddam it's hard to beat "sweet emotion" as that gto is easing into the parking lot. one of the best credit sequences of the last few decades. but i think i'll take "tuesday's gone" because it just exactly captures that party-fading-toward-morning moment.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Kiss plays when everybody is heading out to the moontower. "You better get your wood screws, cause I'm gonna blow your doors completely off!"

The Criterion edition is THA SHIT.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

duly noted. lots of extras?

marmotwolof, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

"Slow Ride," because of how it's used in the movie.

Jiminy Krokus, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-CHERRY BOMB!

dad a, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:44 (eighteen years ago)

yeah sorry I didn't have total recall of which scene exactly fit each song so I decided not to write that in...so take it as either best song/moment in the film or just the tune on here that would make you most happy if it popped on your local classic rock station

Johnny Hotcox, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

one thing i love about the movie is how it puts all these songs back in context of how they sounded then, so they seem sexy and new instead of mossy.

tipsy mothra, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

"Tuesday's Gone" at the end of the kegger is just so beautiful

Johnny Hotcox, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

duly noted. lots of extras?

Oh yes, you get:

Audio commentary by Linklater
"Making Dazed," a 50-minute documentary by filmmaker Kahane Corn
Rare on-set interviews and behind-the-scenes footage
Footage from the ten-year anniversary celebration
Audition footage
Deleted Scenes

And the book is really nice too. Some essays, bits from the companion book, and a reprinted oral history from Texas Monthly. The extras disc has a option wherein you can watch all the bonus material in "Shuffle" mode.

I've gotta stop doing all this free plugging for Criterion.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 01:49 (eighteen years ago)

"...take it easy..."

gigabytepicnic, Friday, 3 August 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

i might have to go with highway star. that's a nice list of songs though.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

i would pick highway star over paranoid just cuzza the guitar solo. it's one of my top five solos ever.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

the beat club version of highway star... solos are apeshit.

i picked "lord have mercy on my soul" cause it's killer.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Friday, 3 August 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for the greatest phoneme in recorded music history: "F" from "F-Foxy."

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 3 August 2007 05:16 (eighteen years ago)

"No More Mister NIce Guy" by the `Coop.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 3 August 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto Tipsy Mothra. I almost went with Sweet Emotion which, prior to my having seen D&C, I had thought would be a great song with which to open a 70s movie, providing me with no small amount of wish fulfillment. Tuesday's Gone stole the show though.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

free ride

deej, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

Slow Ride

kornrulez6969, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

No More Mister Nice Guy as Mitch gets busted in slow motion is so ACE!

mizzell, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

But I don't remember when Steve Miller is used in the movie. doo doo doo doo do do

mizzell, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think Steve Miller pops up during the party. You don't hear much of it though.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

tough choice. i went for cherry bomb, but it could just as easily have been sweet emotion.

stevie, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

this is basically choosing a favorite scene, which is almost impossible! Top contenders are "Sweet Emotion", "Slow Ride" and maybe "Right Place, Wrong Time".

Dominique, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, "Right Place, Wrong Time" works so well in it's scene.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Man, so much stuff to love there. (Even though the film itself wasn't so hot - can't match many scenes with the corresponding songs without seeing it again.) I'm inclined to choose "Low Rider" (most irresistable groove in history, plus it accompanied the mailbox scene, which was kinda funny and true-to-life in its idiocy), but I've praised that song far too often here and could've easily chosen Sweet or BOA or the Runaways - none of whom suffer from excessive airplay, thankfully.

I wonder how come "Dazed and Confused" itself was nowhere to be heard on the soundtrack?

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I believe you are wrong about two things
The movie is indeed quite hot
Low Rider is playing as all the kids are cruising, not when they break the mailboxes later on.

mizzell, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

I think Cherry Bomb is actually my favorite song on the soundtrack, but I voted for the usage of Tuesday's Gone though I might actually like the Free Ride usage better.

gabbneb, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder how come "Dazed and Confused" itself was nowhere to be heard on the soundtrack?

Led Zep songs are hard to license for films (unless you're Cameron Crowe), and even then they're really expensive.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

ALL OF THEM

hstencil, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

EXCEPT FRAMPTON WHICH IS A LITTLE GAY

hstencil, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

one that's not listed is when they play the guitar intro to Frampton's "Show Me the Way" as Tony and pals drive up to the burger place -- I always love that, it's like the official start of the night

you know it's a good soundtrack when it makes you like songs you never did before

Dominique, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

xpost to second the use of "Tuesday's Gone"

Martin Van Burne, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Tuesday's Gone is used perfectly in that movie. Skynyrd's slow songs are always better than their boogie numbers.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Show me the Way is listed

mizzell, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

there it is!

Dominique, Friday, 3 August 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Although it is a terrible song, the context in which we hear "Summer Breeze" is so so good. The new freshman, making it with the older girl.. the night is winding down. He just seems so happy.

Tipsy Mothra OTM about "Sweet Emotion" and the credit sequence.

"School's out" is used excellently as well.

Tough call.

kwhitehead, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

low
ri
der

get a little lower

Steve Shasta, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

no summer breeze not terrible! but that song doesn't need me to defend it. it is wonder and light.

scott seward, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in the mood
the rhythm is right

The Good Dr. Bill, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

low rider

drone/a/sore, Friday, 3 August 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Highway Star

Bill Magill, Friday, 3 August 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Myonga check out the movie again, I think it's one of those films that gets better each time you see it

Johnny Hotcox, Saturday, 4 August 2007 00:18 (eighteen years ago)

also where is the love for "Fox on the Run"? I'm such a sucker for hard rock with outsized synths

Johnny Hotcox, Saturday, 4 August 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even remember hearing that in the movie! but yeah, the version on the american album with ++ synthesizers kicks the crap out of the british album version.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 4 August 2007 03:31 (eighteen years ago)

That'd be Alice Cooper, even though his best stuff was all non-singles and not included in any movie.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 08:13 (eighteen years ago)

i don't even remember hearing that in the movie!

It plays under the sequence w/Wooderson's line about High School Girls.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 10 August 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

also where is the love for "Fox on the Run"? I'm such a sucker for hard rock with outsized synths

I loved on it in a big way, sweetie! Scroll up.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 10 August 2007 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

Top 6
1 Sweet Emotion
2 Schools out
3 Fox on the run
4 Cherry Bomb
5 Low Rider
6 Slow Ride

The soundtrack album I've got's missing half the songs on the list. I'd like to hear the rest.

bidfurd, Friday, 10 August 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Friday, 10 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Saturday, 11 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

If I'd seen this poll, it would have been "Tuesday's Gone," for the reasons cited above and also because I unironically dig it. But it's a shame to see so little Head East love...

rogermexico., Sunday, 12 August 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder how come "Dazed and Confused" itself was nowhere to be heard on the soundtrack?

Led Zep songs are hard to license for films (unless you're Cameron Crowe), and even then they're really expensive

Maybe they should've asked Jake Holmes for permission!

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 13 August 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

the original poll got it right, tuesday's gone

velko, Friday, 31 October 2008 09:35 (seventeen years ago)
