What is it that sells such crap today? Brittney Spears, no talent but sells millions.Nickelback, less talent than your average garage band yet sells millions.John Mayer,an embarrassing, sell your soul imatation of Dave Matthews. Shakira, no talent has yet to be displayed but, sells millions.Creed, the kings of cliche, pearl jam imatation second rate, thinks they have some message to spread world wide;maybe somebody should crucify the singer so we can see is if he is as GOD like as he seems to think he is.I think you get my point. One more question;Who buys this shit? I don't know any one who does, yet this trash sells! WHY DOES THIS SHIT SELL ?

New "I laughed out loud at this" answers.

Keiko, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because it is safe. Creed isn't as aggressive as Pearl Jam, nor as grunge-affiliated. Shakira is South America to a lot of people, minus those difficult rhythms and plus a swinging booty. John Mayer is a sweet college kid who likes Phish, but doesn't like to jam. People find comfort in cheap imitations.

Pearl Jam is dangerous!

bnw, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because people like it. The word "talentless" has no meaning.

"I laughed out loud at this" ... keiko you will probably think i am being disingenuous but i'm not, it's a real question : why?

duane, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...because people are exposed to it. Having said that, maybe people DO like it. Commercial doesn't necessarily mean crap; it means creating music with the intention of people liking it.

There's always been plenty of crap among the best selling music, and I expect there always will be. Degree of talent and volume of sales have always had very little connection.

Britney, by the way,has sold through making good singles, however much of the credit for that belongs to her or to other people.

Is it only me that thinks ILM is becoming more and more like the Audiogalaxy message boards?

although the idea of a "sell your soul imatation [sic] of dave matthews" leads me to believe this John Mayer person must be the most EVIL CREATURE CURRENTLY ALIVE.

Because people are fucking sheep with appallingly low goddamn standards, that's why. Actually, I just think that some people don't take music as seriously as others, and are more than happy to stuff their ears with tasteless PABULUM (there, I said it -- you knew it was coming anyway) than bother to seek out the definite article. Personally, I'd rather jab myself in the ear repeatedly with a rusty fork than subject myself to the yawnsome product of, say, Creed, but y'know.....that's me.

Perhaps they don't particularly like music, but they're depressed or happy, they don't feel like reading a bestseller or they can't, the house is too quiet, and the radio keeps playing things that they don't like or that make them depressed. Incidentally, to think of 'using the popular form' to sabotage their attempts to soothe themselves seems (given the conditions of this paragraph) a bit of a betrayal.

I've bought one Britney album and been bought one - never bought anything else by the people on your list but this hopefully goes partway to answering your question.

Tom, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It all comes down to personal taste - almost everyone thinks the Fall is crap, but I love them. A friend who has *alot* in common with me hates Trans Am, but I like like them.

The answer is that people cannot really be bothered searching for stuff they might really like but simply enjoy the music that's puched upon them.

The light is on and burning for the masses.

Sasha Gabba Hey!, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What I've never understood is this:

- there is too much music in the world to listen to and fully appreciate all of it in one lifetime.

- why then if you do really enjoy and get something out of the 'low- hanging fruit' as it were, the stuff that it's easy to find, should you spend time looking for other stuff on the off-chance you might enjoy it more (assuming the stuff you like and find easily can fill your time)? I mean I have no patience for people who say "music now is shit" because clearly they're not looking hard enough. But I have no patience either for people who try to make out that effort in looking for new music is a virtue in itself.
