groovemaaan, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Like I Love You." I like my Justin fast. And late at night talking to me.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

isn't Mariah's 'It's Like That' a Neptunes prod?

blueski, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

narrowed down to:
Busta Rhymes - Light Ya Ass On Fire
Kelis - Caught Out There
Kelis - Get Along With You
Kelis - Young, Fresh & New
Jay-Z - Excuse Me Miss
Mystikal feat. Nivea - Danger
Nelly - Hot In Herre
N.O.R.E. - Superthug
N.O.R.E. - Nothin'

Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot

blueski, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Urgh...... I think i'll vote for 'Milkshake' but I'll have to think it over for a while.

baaderonixx, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Signs

Dom Passantino, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

Shame "Pop Shit" was never a single - my favorite thing they did by far.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 August 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

One of these five. I'm leaning towards 1 or 5.

Baby - What Happened To That Boy?
Clipse - Grindin'
Kardinal Offishall - Belly Dancer
Kelis - Milkshake
Mystikal - Bouncin' Back

Alex in SF, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

How the fuck does this list have 4 Beenie Man/Neptunes collabs but not the best, "Bossman"? I'd probably vote for that if it was an option. This is what I was able to narrow it down to so far:

Baby - What Happened To That Boy?
Babyface - There She Goes
Busta Rhymes - Light Ya Ass On Fire
Clipse - Grindin'
Clipse - When The Last Time
Kelis - Get Along With You
Jay-Z - I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)
Justin Timberlake feat. Clipse - Like I Love You
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
LL Cool J - Luv U Better
Mystikal - Bouncin' Back
*NSYNC feat. Nelly - Girlfriend
N.O.R.E. - Superthug
Pharrell feat. Jay-Z - Frontin'
Snoop Dogg feat. Justin Timberlake & Charlie Wilson - Signs
T.I. feat. Beanie Man - I'm Serious
Usher - U Don't Have To Call

Note that there's maybe one song in there from later than 2003.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

Milkshake

runners up: Grindin, Drop it Like It's Hot, What Happened to that Boy

Hurting 2, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm between Shake Ya Ass, Bouncin Back, I Just Wanna Luv U, and Grindin.

Jordan, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

This is pointless. Why choose when they are all fantastic?

I know, right?, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Well, not all, but when there are so many fantastic ones.

I know, right?, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

it's grindin, even with how incomplete this poll is

strongohulkington, Friday, 3 August 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

groutexpectations, Friday, 3 August 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

and what, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

wheres SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

and what, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

well clearly some top 10 singles needed to be dropped from the list to make room for Harlem World album cuts.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

incidentally, from Ma$e wiki:

That same year, Mase was featured on a poo of 112's "Only You," which instantly showcased the young rape's talent. In 1997, he recorded and released his first poo, Harlem World, which became a multi-platinum success, and featured the hit single "Feel So Good," which included a prominent sample of Kool & the Gang's "Hollywood Swinging" and the chorus from Miami Sound Machine's "Bad Boy". Other successful Harlem World singles included "What You Want," "Lookin' at Me," and "24 Hours to Live." Notably popular among mainstream audiences, Mase became one of the label's premiere acts.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

holy shit i didnt even see no southern hospitality

RE-DO THIS NOW

strongohulkington, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Ludacris - Southern Hospitality
Kelis - Caught Out There
Philly's Most Wanted - Cross The Border
Mystikal - Bouncin' Back
N.O.R.E. - Nothin'
Kelis - Popular Thug
Nelly - Hot In Herre
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Got Your Money
Clipse - Grindin
Beenie Man - Girls Dem Suga

Tim F, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

caught out there is a good song but pretty weak as a 'production'

and what, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

"clipse and j. timberlake
now how heavy is that?"

uh.... not really heavy at all?

Steve Shasta, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

re "Caught out There":

What no way - the dying cathode lasers, the t-t-t-toc beat, the robots doing salsa beat too, it's a brilliant production.

Tim F, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

No "Southern Hospitality" is a truly criminal omission.

Alex in SF, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah the appeal of a lot of their earlier more barebones productions like "Caught Out There" is kinda shattered the first time you fire up a Triton or some other basic drum machine and the demo beat sounds like one of those songs. (xpost)

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

the appeal of superthug is never diminished

and what, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

the appeal of many punk songs is also shattered when you learn to play three chords

strongohulkington, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

^^^on point xp

deej, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

being able to get a similiar tone as a punk band with a cheapo guitar pedal =/ being able to get the exact same drum sound as an internationally revered superstar production team with a bargain bin drum machine, at least in terms of ripping up one's illusions about said artists.

"Superthug"'s drum pattern is pretty ill and a little more creative than most of their other stuff from that era so I didn't really mean that one.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Tha Liks - Best U Can

underrated

deej, Friday, 3 August 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

^I was just thinking about that one. It's kind of a Neptunes phone-in and not even an album highlight, but still great.

Jordan, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

hah thats a good way of putting it. i think if it was in everyone's top 5's i'd consider it overrated

deej, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

this is a brilliant poll and i'm voting for "grindin'," but "girls dem sugar" is one of the 5 best songs on here.
i might be tempted to vote for "u don't have to call" if it was the remix, which has two of luda's best guest verses ever.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

yeah true. likewise I'd be more likely to vote for "Girlfriend" if the option to vote for wasn't the remix.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

although i remember thinking when i heard it that "what happened to that boy" beat was like the hardest thing i'd ever heard.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

The problem with the "Girls Dem Sugar (Remix)" is that I'm not sure it's actually better than the original.

Alex in SF, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

the more i look at these choices the more i boggle

strongohulkington, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

i think i remember reading some bile re: "light ya ass on fire" somewhere 'round here (maybe an n.e.r.d. thread, maybe regarding someone saying that they could do the beat in like two seconds), but what an awesome song this is. oh and "pass the courvoisier".

GAH "HOLLA BACK (YOUNG'N)".

this poll is literally making me crazy. i'd pay someone like 25 bucks for a zip of all of these songs.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:13 (eighteen years ago)

"Light Ya Ass On Fire" is great, but I'm not sure it's better than any of their other Busta tracks ("As I Come Back" is quite good? Was that not a single?)

Alex in SF, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

"Light Ya Ass On Fire" is another one where I stumbled upon a similiar drum sound like 6 months before that song came out and was probably salty about it at first, but the way they used it was awesome and I give them mad respect for it.

"As I Come Back" wasn't really a single, although it was tacked on at the end of a video.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

I show a 12" release on discogs. That qualifies as a single in my book.

Alex in SF, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

this is what i posted to a "pick only 10" neptunes thread from FOUR YEARS AGO. even though i transposed the parentheses in two songs.

i think i'd mostly stand by it.

kelis - kaleidoscope
luda - "southern hospitality"
beenie man - "girls dem sugar"
fabolous - "young'n (holla back)"
phillies most wanted - "cross the border"
nore - "superthug"
clipse - "grindin (selector mix)"
p diddy - "d.i.d.d.y."
mystikal - "bouncin back"
jay-z - "give it to me (i just wanna luv u)"

-- jess, Friday, March 28, 2003

strongohulkington, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

picking only ten from this list would make my head explode.
who else wants to talk about "holla back (youngn)"??

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 3 August 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

I was going to do this poll (and a Timbaland one), but I knew I'd screw up. Looks pretty good!

Narrowed down to:
Clipse - Grindin'
Clipse - When The Last Time
Kelis - Milkshake
Jay-Z - I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)
Justin Timberlake feat. Clipse - Like I Love You
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Ol' Dirty Bastard feat. Kelis - Got Your Money
Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Drop It Like It's Hot
Snoop Dogg feat. Justin Timberlake & Charlie Wilson - Signs
Usher - U Don't Have To Call

Tape Store, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

Good to see "Cross The Border" is getting some love - best generic Neptunes groove ever.

Tim F, Friday, 3 August 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "Got Your Money" 'cause ODB is one of my favorite recording artists of all time, but DAMN IT I LOVE "HOT IN HERRE."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 4 August 2007 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to have to work on this. Probably for longer than this poll allows.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:02 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

#1's pretty obvious, but I'm pretty surprised that #2 and #3 placed there.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

there is easily 10-12 songs on this list that are better than "signs."

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

No.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

lol saw that coming.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

two better snoop songs even.

Jordan Sargent, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

No.

Tape Store, Friday, 10 August 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

see you in the RONG thread, tape store.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 10 August 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

No surprises that the first seven or so are all from late-2002 onwards (never mind that most of the absolute best Neptunes productions pre-date that)

Tim F, Friday, 10 August 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

Man, "Cross the Border" was the jam. Why doesn't that get played in clubs any more? The rappers are generic bang-bang gangsta but the Neptunes really dropped a gem with that production.

Rob Threezy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 03:51 (seventeen years ago)

man stfu about phillys most but i do agree cross the border needs to get back on dj playlists

and what, Thursday, 3 April 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

What the fuck ever happened to these guys?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 3 April 2008 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

Hit the Freeway is a great single, very overlooked.

chap, Thursday, 3 April 2008 11:41 (seventeen years ago)

Yes "Cross The Border" is amazing. But I always thought the rapping on it was pretty awesome. Esp. "I ain't tryna talk I'm tryna fuck" as the beat comes stomping in.

Tim F, Thursday, 3 April 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

Does the rest of this record sound that good? Or is it all filler.

Rob Threezy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

"Hit the Freeway" is really good! I still listen to that. is there a version of "What Happened To That Boy?" with less baby on it? the one I have.. the beat is great but every time he opens his mouth.. ugh

Mystikal - Bouncin' Back = awesome, I might have voted for that. Or Gwen "Wind it Up" which maybe no one else likes :)

daria-g, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

"Wind It Up" weirdly grew on me after initially assuming I'd hate it as much as "Hollaback Girl."

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)
