This one's tough for me, coming down to a Blink 182 vs. Destiny's Child contest.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 August 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Joe Lewis Thomas"

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 4 August 2007 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

I love a few of these (e.g. "Rock the Boat," "Clint Eastwood," and..."Fat Lip"), but the answer is "Stutter (Remix)"

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

This is a high. There are a good seven songs that are completely fucking epochal.

1. Usher : "U Got It Bad"
2. Aaliyah : "Rock the Boat"
3. 'N Sync : "Pop"
4. Destiny's Child : "Bootylicious"
5. Jennifer Lopez : "I'm Real"
6. Janet Jackson : "Someone to Call My Lover"
7. Sum 41 : "Fat Lip"
8. The Wiseguys : "Start the Commotion"
9. Joe Lewis Thomas featuring Mystikal: "Stutter"
10. Christina Milian : "AM to PM"

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Wait...which "I'm Real" is it? The Ja Rule/"Mary Jane" one is great. The other I could do without.

"Clint Eastwood" is terrible. My lord it clunks.

The Reverend, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

DAMNIT. You're right about "Clint Eastwood" not being that good...I LOVED it in fourth grade, but I just played it again and...meh. But "Fat Lip" still rocks. And "Stutter (Remix)" is even better than I remembered.

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit. I can't in good conscience vote for any of these.

rogermexico., Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

Of course you can't...YOU LIKE FUEL!

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

The only ones from this that I can say I really like in the present day are "Fat Lip," "Rock Show," and "Bootylicious." I heard the latter recently and was surprised by how well it exploited its sample, I can really imagine that thing kicking ass on a dance floor. Gorillaz and Wiseguys I liked at the time but just got way too sick of.

My vote's for Sum-41 in any case, deliciously snotty and their drummer is pretty excellent. Is "In Too Deep" on any of these things? The drumming and the guitar solo on that promised a whole new generation of incredibly tuneful, vaguely metal-influenced pop-punk from guys that looked like the Monkees. Speaking of which, that Smash Mouth Monkees cover blows chunks.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Of course you can't...YOU LIKE FUEL!

Weak. I voted for Cthulhu too, but that doesn't mean I "like" him.

rogermexico., Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

FUEL rocks my world. I like that song called "Welcome to the fold" or something like that. Oh wait, I'm thinking of Filter! D'oh! Well I vote the Booty.

gigabytepicnic, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

"Fat Lip" and "Clint Eastwood" were fucking MASSIVE for me in summer of 2001, but I think only the former would still excite me today. "Pop" is probably my favorite 'N Sync track, and I remember it also felt huge at the time; totally a statement record.

"I'm Real" is rendered unlistenable by the obnoxious autotune effect. "Crush" is rendered unlistenable by remembrance of the giggle-inducing Dismemberment Plan cover. most of the rest of these either obviously suck or I just don't remember them (this was around the time I finally got a CD player and liberated myself from the whims of top 40 radio).

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:49 (eighteen years ago)

"liberated myself from the whims of top 40 radio" UGH what a terrible series of words. I'm kind of disgusted with myself right now.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:50 (eighteen years ago)

St-St-Stutter

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:50 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, excuse me, YOU LIKE A FUEL SONG.

Tape Store, Saturday, 4 August 2007 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

Stutter is brilliant, Bootylicious is brilliant, Start the Commotion is brilliant. I have to give it to Bootylicious though, even though I don't want to.

musically, Saturday, 4 August 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

OH SHIT, I totally forgot about "Stutter"! damn, that was a great song (Mystikal kinda ruins it, though). already voted for "Fat Lip", oh well.

bernard snowy, Saturday, 4 August 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Voted U2. Mainly because the rest sucks.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

'Bootylicious' sucks?!

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 August 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

"Someone to call my lover" definitly. Sweetest track of the lot.

Christyles, Saturday, 4 August 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

'Bootylicious' sucks?!

Anything that has ever been made in that genre sucks.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Huh. I missed Bootylicious right there at the top of the list. Looks like there's something I can get behind after all.

rogermexico., Saturday, 4 August 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

A bit more difficult this time. Finally went for "AM to PM" just ahead of "Bootylicious".

Jeff W, Monday, 6 August 2007 09:22 (eighteen years ago)

This is definitely the most listenable of the comps yet. The closest to a song I KNOW I don't like is "Walk On." For some reason I thought "Be Like That" was more recent.

I went with "Pop," just over "Someone To Call My Lover" and "Bootylicious."

da croupier, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

Best NOW comp?

Cunga, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

"fat lip" and "rock show" are two of the best pop-punk songs of the "era"

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

with that said, i voted for "rock show"

CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS SUMMER AT THE WARPED TOOUUUUR

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Pop" is bizarre...not even the New Kids' "Tonight" was so meta. No wonder it broke their Top Ten streak. Funny how "Pop" -- the first N'Sync single on which JT gets a songwriting credit -- got these games out of the way so that he could make the real thing later. I mean, "Gone" and "Girlfriend" are lots better.

A tough call between "Bootylicious" and Janet's last great single.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, no way. "I Want You" and "All Nite (Dan Perry to thread)" come afterward.

I agree about the bizarreness of "Pop", but it's not just the meta-ness. There's the whole hardcore sound-design as pop production aspect, too. I like it better than either of the latter singles from that album. Timberlake's singing is rather horrible on "Gone" and "Girlfriend" feels like a total non-starter. "Do Your Thing", now that's what's up.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

"Clint Eastwood" over "Bootylicious"?

ILM, either I don't know you anymore or this is the usual britisher overnight surprise... I swear y'all would vote for the Stone Roses in every poll if you could...

rogermexico., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "Clint Eastwood"

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Good to see "Bootylicious" not winning.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 23:44 (eighteen years ago)

WAHT

The Reverend, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

BOOOOOOO!

"Stutter" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gorillaz (terrible novelty song...go back and listen to it like I did...you'll realize how much it sucks)

Tape Store, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

GOD ILM, I HATE YOU!

Tape Store, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

SRSLY!

Tape Store, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

We need a way to make it so you have to participate in the thread before you can vote. And your participation has to be judged substantial and intelligent. And you can't vote for the fucking Gorillaz song.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ NOW thread regulars getting sonned by Britishers

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 9 August 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

All British ILX posters hate Gorillaz. I assume this was a poll scammer.
