My vote for "Killer Queen" even though it isn't powerpop.

Not going to be very surprised if "September Gurls" wins this though.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

Another Girl is about the best on the list (other than Metal Guru which wouldn't be PP)
My three favorites are-

Marie Provost - Nick Lowe
Baby Blue - Badfinger
Girl of My Dreams - Bram Tchaikovsky

Baby Blue being the best.

Anything Jellyfish

gigabytepicnic, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of stuff here that i would hardly call power pop (not just "Killer Queen"), not to speak of stuff i've never even heard of.

Badfinger should be the clear winner, though

mitya, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

Great thread.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

Teenage Kicks.

But leaving off Shake Some Action is a huge oversight.

kornrulez6969, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for friday on my mind. cuz it's my fave powerpop song. and it's great.

scott seward, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

no green, no credibility.

Lawrence the Looter, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Where's "Yellow Pills"? And what's "Driver's Seat" doing on this comp?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Saturday, 4 August 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

"Shake Some Action" OTM. Should have been in there obviously. Possibly "Yellow Pills" too (although even though I love it myself, and might even have voted for it instead of Queen, it is somewhat more "obscure")

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 4 August 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Echo Beach"

2for25, Sunday, 5 August 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

People need to recognize that 'Tonight' is the Raspberries choice cut.

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 5 August 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

Voted for "Driver's Seat" (which reminds me more of early Dire Straits than of, say, the Knack or Records or Raspberries, but what the heck.)

Second place might not be "Isn't It Time" by the Babys, but it's close.

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 August 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

The Raspberries choice cut would have been "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)".

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 5 August 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

They should have picked "Starry Eyes" instead of "Hearts in Her Eyes." No Elvis Costello?

leavethecapital, Sunday, 5 August 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Overnight Sensation is The Raspberries best song. Not sure if it is Power Pop, more of a Power Ballad though.

niceboy, Sunday, 5 August 2007 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for "Play The Hits" by Hal.

I have this compilation and it's really good.

the next grozart, Sunday, 5 August 2007 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

hanging on the telephone

m0stlyClean, Sunday, 5 August 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

If you guys really think all these songs are better than "Magic," I have some downloading to do.

Sundar, Monday, 6 August 2007 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

oh shoot, I missed "Magic"! I'd change my vote if I could.

gigabytepicnic, Monday, 6 August 2007 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

Crap, "Driver's Seat" is one of my all-time favorite songs! I didn't even see it just now, but it's okay 'cause John Waite needs the love

Morley Timmons, Monday, 6 August 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

"Friday On My Mind". I wish I had the "remix" from 96 Rock in Tampa in the mid 80s when they played this on their Friday 5PM show with added time clock whistles, etc.

Euler, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

no green, no credibility.

Seconded. They absolutely defined powerpop in the 80s and 90s.

Sara Sara Sara, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

"My Best Friend's Girl" ... that song is just architypal to this genre, if that's what you want to call it. I smile and bop every time I hear it. So it gets my vote.

POLL: Coolest Power Pop Girl

MC, Monday, 6 August 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Despite their relative merits, I'm not quite sure what these are doing on the compilation:

Killer Queen - Queen
I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - Proclaimers
You Get What You Give - New Radicals
Magic - Pilot
Metal Guru - T-Rex
Echo Beach - Martha & The Muffins

The top 6 is easily:

No Matter What - Badfinger
I Want You To Want Me (live at The Budokan) - Cheap Trick
Hanging On The Telephone - Blondie
Cruel To Be Kind - Lowe, Nick
September Gurls - Big Star
Hearts In Her Eyes - Records

If it had been "Surrender" instead of "I Want You..." I would have gone with Cheap Trick, but as it is, have to vote "September Gurls".

MC, Monday, 6 August 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Septbember Boys got it bad...

Steve Shasta, Monday, 6 August 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

no green, no credibility.

Seconded. They absolutely defined powerpop in the 80s and 90s.

Yeah, the lack of love for Green around here is kinda mystifying...so I'll just go ahead and write-in "Not Going Down Anymore." The absolute definition of powerpop. Crashingly thrilling.

Stevie D, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

September Gurls - Big Star
Hearts In Her Eyes - Records

I voted for Raspberries' "No Matter What." I'm not such a huge fan of their albums--some great stuff but Eric Carmen as Sir Paul Ramone isn't my idea of fun fun fun--but seems to me that song sums it up about as good as anything. "No Matter What" was my second choice. Of the Big Star songs, certainly "September Gurls" is excellent, but of their songs I'd pick "Back of a Car."

whisperineddhurt, Friday, 10 August 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Obviously, I voted for the Raspberries' "Go All the Way." I'm listening to Jackie DeShannon singing Bacharach and it's distracting me.

whisperineddhurt, Friday, 10 August 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Wreckless Eric for me.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 10 August 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Friday, 10 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Echo Beach got more votes than Best Friends Girl? ILX, you confuse me again! (Shame I missed this poll, though in looking at the totals and my likely choice, I wouldn't have displaced anything...)

I eat cannibals, Friday, 10 August 2007 23:59 (eighteen years ago)

Pathetic:

You Get What You Give - New Radicals 4
There She Goes - La's 3

My Sharona - Knack 0

xhuxk, Saturday, 11 August 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

Won by a possible non-powerpop song.

And "My Sharona" is hardly a song at all, plus it gave Powerpop a bad name for ages. A deserved 0.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 11 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

my sharona is horrible

tremendoid, Saturday, 11 August 2007 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

A proud New Radicals voter!

Tape Store, Saturday, 11 August 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

New Radicals is OK I guess. A bit like Hall & Oates: R&B-influenced Powerpop.
