A middling-sized Britpop hit from a middling sized Britpop band. Weirdly though, some like minded twenty-somethings came round to talking about songs we liked from back when we were teenagers and the band came up. Surprised to find that we were unanimous in calling this a secret fave of this song. The only problem is that sometimes it veers into Crowded House territory.
Whatever happened to the Longpigs (other than getting swept under the going Britpop tide?) - they weren't bad songwriters at all and could well have leapt in to replace Suede or Radiohead after those bands gave up their original templates. I heard it was drugs that cocked up their second album. Any truth?

i like their second album better than the first, even though every piece of writing i've seen about it dismisses it as a failure

Wasn't ol' Babylon Zoo from out of the Longpigs?

No, Sandkings.

Crispin Hunt, Longpigs singer, is step-son or something of some MP, isn't he? He did an album with Howie B a couple of years ago called Mayonnaise or something. It wasn't bad. A mate of mine who's about 40 absolutely adores Longpigs, thinks they're the great lost band of the 90s. The debut album had a handful of very good songs on it.

Xpost ah right, that's why I thought it seemed such a drastic change at the time. Because it wasn't them!

Haha 'She Said' was played at Poptimism a few months back - it went down surprisingly well.

'she said' is the only keeper from this dismal band.

I only remember She Said. I quite like it.

the first album's an absolute killer i think - shamefully i never even bothered to listen to the second one, such was its universal critical panning. my flatmate's got it though so perhaps i'll give it a pop.
big up richard hawley! although he freely admits he barely wrote anything during his time in the longpigs, happy at the time to get drunk and play whatever he was told to.
now shed seven have sold out three nights at shebu empire, i wonder who else will reappear - adorable would be nice :-)

I really, really enjoy "Mobile Home" (the second album) and have played it multiple times the past couple weeks. Shame Crispin hasn't done anything since.

See my post above; he did an album with Howie B in about 2005.

"Lost Myself" and "She Said" (from 'The Sun Is Often Out') are both absolutely killer.

The second album was fantastic, if you ignore most of the lyrics. I'm still shocked they never released Dance Baby Dance as a single.

There was an excellent lengthy thread discussing the rockier end of Britpop - Longpigs, Therapy?, Terrorvision, Wildhearts etc. Fucked if I can remember what it was called.
