Listened to Arular again. I found her (or Switch's) beats and her lyrics so refreshing in 2005 but I can't come to grips why it should be considered a classic. Is this a great album?
― Deirdre22, Monday, 6 August 2007 10:09 (eighteen years ago)
I gave this a spin last week. It does. The stretch between "Amazon" & "Galang" isn't quite as good as the rest, but I knew that at the time.
― The Reverend, Monday, 6 August 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)
No, it's really flat and boring. Gave it a spin on Friday, and it just never connected outside of a couple of tracks (I still think Galang is great).

Richard "Wood" Johnson in 5...

one of the ugliest sleeves ever, and outside of a couple of songs the soudns are too much of the same thing over and over
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 6 August 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, it's still pretty great.
― funny farm, Monday, 6 August 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

BAN EVERYONE IN THIS FUCKING THREAD
― Dom Passantino, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:28 (eighteen years ago)
You seem to be trolling for a response, BIG HOOS. Let me just say that if MIA fans feel like she is on the receiving end of an unusual amount of negative attention, then it would appear to her detractors that her fans are unusually defensive.

Yes, it holds up, and I was delighted when earlier this year my students knew who she was. About "Bucky Done Gun" -- "It sounds real old-school."
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 6 August 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)
I was surprised to see it on my 15-year-old sister's Christmas list back inna day.

I only feel like she's on the receiving end of a lot of negative attention from you and a small & vocal handful of detractors, but I don't begrudge you your opinion or anything.

are you serious?
m.i.a. is basically the definition of "disposable" in the '00s

No one's defending her fashion sense.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)
I was calling stephen "edgy" for saying she was the def of "disposable."
Unless you weren't talking to me?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:14 (eighteen years ago)
if m.i.a. is "disposable" then please delete music. (and i don't even like her actual tunes)

I was even more pleased when my then-11 year old brother latched onto "Arular" and played it for his friends
― Stevie D, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)
Naw, that was in response to Stephen.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)
I see the "Galang" video on the MTV Hits channel all the time.

oh please.. "edgy" my ass
MIA is a poser and so are you.
― stephen, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)
I don't think I've ever heard anyone over the age of 16 use the word "poser" in all seriousness.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 04:34 (eighteen years ago)
M.I.A. IS a poser lol http://assets4.pitchforkmedia.com/images/image/34577.mia.jpg

its spelled "poseur"
― max, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)
i seriously have never seen a photo of her where she isn't kneeling or crouching.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 07:16 (eighteen years ago)

She certainly is posing in that photo.
Unless you had some considerably more juvenile meaning of "poseur" in mind.

The complete album is not a classic. Kneeling for prolonged periods of time is not Feng Shwa and biases the world against you.

wow all caps over this?
will regret joining in but...
I couldn't care less whether she's 'real' or isn't. Isn't probably better if the new ones anything to go by, gives her more freedom.
I DO care that she tends to sound like she's not really feeling anything much, 'cos it WAY spoils her otherwise interesting music...
fake genres, 'fake music' - good fake/absent emotion? - eeeeh not so much
― fandango, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)
did she change her stylist recently?
― fandango, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)
'cos y'know if she doesn't even have one, omg one score 'authentic' point.
I think the only people still grumbling about her inauthenticity as the MAIN thing wrong about her are on er... on dissensus probably. Not here, way too many popti-fascists about, it wouldn't fly.
― fandango, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

― poortheatre, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)
(sorry, i've been dying to do that all day)
xxpost this isn't a backlash. This is a large group of people saying "Kala is AMAZING" or "Kala is quite good", and a smaller group of people saying "Kala isn't that great" or "I really don't like Kala at all; she/it lacks merit"
and then a bunch of ridiculous comments about her photographs.
