damn! :-(

I saw him play once - ppl have of course said he wasn't in his 'prime', but he still had that improvisor's knack for...making something out of any situation, and age and sickness is just another situation.

He ws great.

Great indeed he was. Saw him play in this neck of the woods (a little seaside resort, actually) once in the early 90s. In Peter Brötzmann's März Combo. In which the other trombone was Johannes Bauer...

Oh man, what a gddamm shame - he's almost the star player on things like Four Compositions for Sextet

also, a real shame that the fuckwits sent Marcello packing - I'm sure he would've had great things to say on this thread

I keep seeing this thread and thinking that Mike Rutherford and Paul Carrack both died in some freak Mike + The Mechanics touring accident.

Ah that's a shame, I remember there were benefit concerts for him a couple of years ago so I knew he was ill. I only saw him a couple of times in his later years (and one of those wasn't in a great unit really), any recommendations from anyone on the best records to hear?

If you're gonna go for a couple I'd say "Chapter One" by Iskra 1903 - its that rarity, a 3CD set with no flab.

Then there is his solo CD "A gentle harm of the bourgeoisie".

Super bummer, in a week chock-full-o-them.

Had the opportunity to watch him perform on a couple of occasions, always astounding.

hopefully Seth won't mind if we borrow his photo:

and yeah, 'Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie' is just one of the all-time solo improv melters.

we talked about it:

Did Paul Rutheford invent the glitch?
