There's a little run there toward the end with Lights, Lovin Touchin Squeezin and Open Arms that I can easily strike from the list, but I like all the others!

If I'll Be Alright Without You, Faithfully and Girl Can't Help It were replaced with Stone In Love, I'm Cryin' and Feeling That Way this album would be perfect.

"Girl Can't Help It" might be their most underrated song.

"Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" wins for me though.

Journey takes WAY too much shit.

I go with Any Way You Want It, for the amazing first 15 seconds.

I had that on a tape as a little kid and I would just rewind the intro over and over. I still voted for DSB, but that's easily #2.

Yes, Separate Ways has a totally cheesy video, but it's a pretty hard rocking song with a great riff. My vote goes there.

It's a left-field choice, perhaps, but I'm voting for "Girl Can't Help It." The one thing I loved about Journey is those showy, big harmonies, and this song has them in abundance. I'm a little disappointed that neither "Chain Reaction" nor "After The Fall" are included in the Greatest Hits collection; I'd probably vote for one of them.

LTS is pretty great.

Last time I heard it I was tripping out on how the chorus proper doesn't actually arrive till the song's almost over. Rarely does stadium rock see the value of withholding.

"Separate Ways" is a great song and it gets my vote. Might be the greatest gap between song quality and video quality ever. (OK Go's "Here It Goes Again" is a contender for the opposite reason.) I like all 12 songs I know from this album though. "Wheel In the Sky" and "Any Way You Want It" are close.

Hmm, not as much a DSB landslide as I would've predicted, so far. But it's still early, I guess.

Geir, dude, Journey is WAY up your street. Not very euro-friendly, tho, as corporate rock (Journey, Boston, Styx, Kansas, Foreigner, Loverboy, REO Speedwagon) never had much of a foothold outside of North America…or at least that is my understanding…

Yeah, they were masters of melodic pop songcraft and flawless playing/singing.

If there's anything I love about upstate NY, it's the ubiquitous love for this music.

Was "Escape" not released as a single or was it just not big enough of a hit?

Everything else is a race for second place, which I shall bestow upon "Wheel In the Sky," though "Separate Ways," "Lights," "Don't Stop Believin'" and the magically cheesetastic "Faithfully" (oh god the drums! the drums!) are all legit contenders.

'good' prog = basement musicians overextending themselves, 'bad' prog = supersessioneers playing stuff for stadiums. 'bad' prog is the stuff people like and critics cannot get their heads around however 'playful' they're being. Or to put it another way, if you can't get your head around Journey's "Stone in Love" then you're still outside looking in. "Stone in Love", holy fuck! The guy plays a DIFFERENT FILL on every fuckin' bar, the ending is in like 11/8 time, there's modal inversions and stacked harmonies and it's STILL A FUCKIN' STADIUM ROCK SONG. Plus it makes me play 'air drums' uncontrollably. Anybody can appreciate Greenslade and PFM from arm's length cuz they fulfill the categorical imperative but "SIL" appeals to people who don't know why they like it as well as being the most complicated fuckin' song I've ever heard and thus is off limits to anybody still constrained by punk orthodoxy which is really utilitarianism with safety pins! To borrow a phrase from Fritz Wollner (where the fuck is he these days? Come back!), Jon Anderson = Che, Steve Perry = Castro, whoever you (want to?) 'identify' with more determines whether you actually 'get' prog or if you're just 'playing' at it! (Contrary to received opinion 'prog' is NOT about the 'playing' [instro-spaking], otherwise they'd 'jam' more)

(so if you were to play Journey to a critic who's decided to 'redeem prog' he might say a) "well it doesn't sound all that complicated to me" or b) "It's cornier than any pop I've ever heard", ie (a) = 'i don't actually understand music technique'(b) = "I'm against corny Pavlovian pop", both of which postions are tenable but how is it possible to believe both of them at the same time!) (unless you do a lateral move into sociology ie "Santana and the Airplane devolved into THIS!?" But that should make everybody happy cuz Journey = lysergic totalitarianism REALISED!) Re "Don't Stop Believin'" - I think the 'crescendo' effect comes from all the ingenious interlocking parts. The bass figure is originally played with the left hand on the piano intro, then the bass gtr plays it in the first bit of the song, while the guitar is playing the same chords as the piano intro the solo, and then the vocal chorus at the end restates the theme from the guitar solo while the gtr and bass are now doubling that original intro! It all comes together! And when Journey do it you don't even notice the command of 'classical' structure, compare it to a similar-contemporaneous distillation/compression move like Rush "New World Man" which sounds like enthusiastic amateurism in comparison!

Foreigner were huge here. Maybe not to the same extent as in the US, but they had several big European hits too, "Waiting (For a Girl Like You)" and "I Want To Know What Love Is" being the biggest. Also, they weren't too bad until the latter plague of a song destroyed their reputation forever.

"Don't Stop Believing" is to "New World Man" as jai alai is to a parking lot game of hackysack. There are motifs getting passed around the arrangement all over the place (kind of an Ornette-ish thing, but obviously with a much different effect) but there is such a difference in how fast the musicians are thinking. With Journey (or Ornette), the thinking is so fast you can't notice it. With Rush, the thinking is just slow enough that a thirteen year old kid who just got his first guitar is going to be all over it. Amateurs can (and do) mangle, replicate, and/or exceed Rush all day, but amateurs could not even attempt something like "Stone In Love", much less DSB. I miss Dave Q.

See, that comparison upthread is interesting but I'm not sure that the arrangement tricks in DSB are really that much more subtle than in "New World Man". Are you sure it's not just that you like it better? (e.g. I think it's pretty obvious that the distorted guitar takes over the piano figure when it comes in.) And who replicated and exceeded Rush? Triumph?? Dream Theatre?? I kind of have to question in what sense "Stone In Love" is the most complicated song dave q ever heard as well! I love both songs though.

I've been listening to "Be Good to Yourself" a lot over the past few weeks because, for as much as it's basically a musical "Hang In There" kitten poster, it does lift my mood.

Separate Ways has started to become the new DSB to me in terms of overplay (cos it's done a lot at the karaoke bar by this uber-mega rock tenor friend of mine).

I really like "Who's Crying Now", especially Steve's vocal, but the atmosphere is so "rainy evening" and that piano is fantastic.

I'd probably vote for "Any Way You Want It". I like Journey but this phenomenon is curious to me. This compilation was released in 1988. "Don't Stop Believin'", a 1981 song which people were already hearing on classic rock stations, although maybe not more than "Lights" or "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", and certainly not more than "More Than a Feeling", was used in a popular TV episode, and everyone suddenly decided that it was a universally beloved anthem, to the point that sales of this compilation was revived and it remained a big seller for over a decade?
