quite liked some of the harder stuff on Standard of Language (Charnett Moffett really helps), and he's obv got chops and whatnot, but far too much of the time he plays that mainstream semi-funk noodle that's so fucking boring, he rarely steps outside of his comfort zone or plays with ppl that might divert him from his relentless bop pastiche licks, and he really badly needs to get over Coltrane (or at least, give Interstellar Space a try)

as far as 80s Miles Davis horn players go, he's better than Bill Evans but not as exciting/interesting as Bob Berg

Oh man, I love him with Miles in the 80s.

I haven't really kept up with his records, but Songbook is kind of a modern classic. It's Branford's band but with better tunes and more funk. That's actually something I really like about KG, that he likes playing grooves unapologetically, he doesn't have to make it in 7 or something.

Uh, he was on that terrible Q-Tip album that never came out. :/

But there's a lot of r&b'ish stuff on Happy People, like those first two clips up top.

i discovered KG back when i was listening to a lot of local guys, and this dude http://www.denniswinslett.com/live/ was playing around town w/ david young, a trumpet player who went to my high school and was kind of blowing up at the time ... someone told me that some of his solos reminded him of KG, particularly the burners, so i checked him out and he was dead on ... i think he's a more influential cat that people probably gave him credit for
