Kind of a funny poll as there is no obvious winner here. The votes will probably spread across the pop-side and the Eno-side as well.

Voted "A New Career In a New Town" myself, but both sides are crowded with great songs.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

Don't you wonder sometimes ...

'bout SOUND AND VISION

Romeo Jones, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

Gut reaction - Sound and Vision...

2nd thoughts - is it Breaking Glass? Or Be My Wife?

Nope - It's Sound and Vision.

Davey D, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

be my wife

Today it's "Always Crashing in the Same Car."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 02:57 (eighteen years ago)

"Warszawa" is the greatest achievement, so ultimately voted for that. That being said, when I put this CD in, I'm far more likely to play "What in the World" or "Be My Wife" or "Sound and Vision. If "Some Are" were offered, I might very well vote for that, too. Practically everything on this album I could see deserving a shot at the title.

always crashing in the same car

sleeve, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

one more for "sound and vision," one of Bowie's best:
a. melodies
b. vocal performances
c. lyrics! and he's not exactly mr. reliable in that dept
d. overall settings

song points the way toward "Lodger" for me

song points the way toward "Lodger" for me

Me too! Is it the off-kilter pop?

Davey D, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

side 1: always crashing in the same car
side 2: subterraneans

overall: crashing

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 06:36 (eighteen years ago)

"a new career ..." because ... i dunno why, actually. just because. i can't really choose.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Aha - I put this on last night for the first time in years. I voted for 'Sound & Vision' because it is the most unusual, texturally(?). But then I realised they are all unusual, so I thought I should have voted for 'Be My Wife' because it's the most tuneful. And then I realised they are all tuneful, so I thought I should have voted for 'Breaking Glass' because it's the cleverest. Then I realised they are all clever, and now my head hurts.

He was on a roll here, wasn't he?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

Subterraneans. Fantastically moody track complete with heartfelt nonsense lyrics. But there's not really a weak track.

The 33 1/3 book on this album is really good.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:37 (eighteen years ago)

'always crashing...'

but i really want to vote for 'weeping wall' for how ridiculously ahead of its time it is

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

but i really want to vote for 'weeping wall' for how ridiculously ahead of its time it is

And yet I might say Weeping Wall is the most derivative track - compare and contrast with Steve Reich stuff of that time.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

oh, i'm just talking in terms of how there's much recent music that seems to draw directly from the sound of that particular song. not familiar with anything from that era that it might have borrowed from, steve reich included.

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

"Speed of Life" is right up there as one of the best album openers, period...but "Sound and Vision" is right up there as one of the best Bowie songs period...but "A New Career In A New Town" has the harmonica-meets-futurism vibe going and I'm always falling for that trick.

King Boy Pato, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:30 (eighteen years ago)

plus it has that proto techno intro!

this is a very very hard poll...

willem, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

I think it has to be "Warszawa"

Tom D., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

What In The World.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Be My Wife wins.

zeus, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

i voted with geir! i love that harmonica so much.

gff, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

Be My Wife is my favorite David Bowie song.

Reatards Unite, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 15:40 (eighteen years ago)

i love the sound of breaking glass, but sound and vision kills. it's got a good beat, and you can slit your wrists to it.

fritz, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

S&V beats BG, just. I confess: always skip the last four.

Madchen, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

me too! I should give those songs another chance, I haven't listened to it all the way through since high school

Speed Of Life

Myonga Vön Bontee, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Hardest poll ever. I went with "Be My Wife" because my wife and I like to sing it, but truly there are no weak tracks. Definitely my favorite Bowie album.

Brad C., Wednesday, 8 August 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

too bad some are isn't on here. why was that song left off the album anyway?

akm, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)
