ILM favourites that are otherwise mostly considered flops or disappointments

The albums polled here are all albums that have flopped (or at least been considered a disappointment compared to the rest of the act's output) both/either critically and/or commercially, yet they are favourites of a number of ILM'ers.

It may be a question of definition what constitutes a flop, and some of the picks may be a bit controversial in that case. For instance, "Gaucho" surely sold by the truckload, and is even in several critics lists. But it was still considered a disappointment by lots of people (including the band themselves) when compared to "Aja". Also, "Erotica" may have been huge in the US, but in Europe it received several lukewarm reviews, and sales over here were also somewhat disappointing.

Albums that sold poorly, but have later become recognized cult classics and part of the "canon", have not been included. So no Velvets, no Talk Talk, no Sonic Youth, no Big Star, no Pixies. Or even Turbonegro.

And, yes, I have probably missed lots of albums that would fit in here.

only one of these albums still sounds like the future of rock music

Just got offed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Steely Dan it is, then.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

haha i need to get more steely dan, don't i?

Just got offed, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Voted "The Visitors" myself. It may not today, but it sounded a lot more like the future (not too mention present) of music than us young people growing up were willing to realize back then.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

Gaucho is like what super advanced Star Trek androids will make.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:19 (eighteen years ago)

You mean super advance Star Trek androids are all skilled musicians who are heavily into jazz? ;)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

those ones

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

I mean you could probably put a chip in for that

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

marmotwolof, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for Pulp myself -- and I actually haven't heard about 4-5 albums on this list, but I feel confident saying that Pulp was the *VERY BEST* album that came out that year, to me at least -- and I can't really say that about anything else I've heard on the list, whereas the ones I haven't heard are all from years that I'd guess are 99.9 percent likely to fall below something else that year -- so Pulp it is.

stephen, Thursday, 9 August 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

this is one of those moments where you realise that geir is actually a genius

creme1, Thursday, 9 August 2007 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Geir is a genus.

Dan I., Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

I originally clicked on this thread just to vote for "Second Coming", but HAD to switch to "13" once I saw it. It may not be blur's "greatest" (in a sense of importance), but it is by far their best and most masterfully crafted.

but WTF: "We Love Life" was considered a flop or dsappointment? I thought it got strong reviews? I've always favored it to "Different Class"...

Stevie D, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

I read Geir's original question, then my eyes drift towards:

Duran Duran: Big Thing
Human League: Romantic?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot Queen II

also, was Visitors actually a flop? I know it was a #1 record in the UK (tho don't know total sales)

Dominique, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)

Is 13 liked much by ILM? I hadn't noticed, particularly.

This is an unusually reflective poll from Geir.

Tim F, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

Geir is a genus.

agree, this is a great idea for a poll.

so many great albums but have to go with Pulp's We Love Life.

Bee OK, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)

Let's Dance is a funny choice to me - isn't the one after that the one that was a complete and total flop? But otherwise not a terrible list, Geir. I'm honor-bound to vote for my main man McCartney, in any case. I have a different favorite song on that record every time I listen to it (currently, the tinny, canned-weird version of "Coming Up" is in ascendancy).

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 August 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't Neil Young's Trans get a lotta love around here?

gershy, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

sorta
Neil Young's TRANS: An Underrated Masterpiece, or Justly Ignored?

gershy, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:46 (eighteen years ago)

David Bowie: Let's Dance -- wasn't that a big hit commercially, at least in the USA?

latebloomer, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

yes, it was quite a big hit, critical reaction was mixed but not that bad

gershy, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:59 (eighteen years ago)

we love life got really good reviews. it's just probably got less of a profile than the two records the band put out before it.

i was about to vote for it, but then my hand did a peculiar thing and shifted in the direction of second coming...

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 9 August 2007 05:58 (eighteen years ago)

What is the actual question here? Do we vote for our favourite album from the list, or the one we think has been the biggest flop/disappointment in the real world?

StanM, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:20 (eighteen years ago)

yes.

John Justen, Thursday, 9 August 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

you forgot Queen II

That album is about to be generally rehabilitated now. It isn't just an ILM thing.

also, was Visitors actually a flop? I know it was a #1 record in the UK (tho don't know total sales)

When compared to the rest of their output it was. It had only huge big hit single, "One Of Us", while the following singles all flopped more or less.

Let's Dance is a funny choice to me - isn't the one after that the one that was a complete and total flop?

It was an enormous commercial success, also received some decent reviews, but has in retrospect kind of gained a stature as the beginning of the end of Bowie quality-wise, both among fans and critics.

And "Scary Monsters" surely didn't flop.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 9 August 2007 08:20 (eighteen years ago)

The one after Let's Dance was Tonight.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 9 August 2007 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

Dazzle Ships is such a great record. It must've been puzzling to OMD when everyone wrote it off. Why? It's as good as 'Dare' or 'Penthouse and Pavement', and that means it's REALLY good.

moley, Thursday, 9 August 2007 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

Hasn't Dazzle Ships (and OMD's career up to that point) been rehabilitated and placed in the cult classic category? I thought it had.

With that in mind, I vote Beauty Stab!

King Boy Pato, Thursday, 9 August 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)

Some fine selectoins, but I'll have to go with `TC's Big Express.

Alex in NYC, Thursday, 9 August 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)

I recall XTC's _The Big Express_ got great reviews when it was released, not sure why it's on this list. _Mummer_ received a much more lukewarm reception.

Mr. Odd, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

Erotica, although cognoscenti knew it was her best.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 9 August 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

this is a rather geir-skewed view of what ILM likes.

Mr. Que, Thursday, 9 August 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand this category at all.

Mark G, Thursday, 9 August 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, an album is for *you*. Whether anyone else likes it, who cares.

I like (heck, love), about 75% of the list, so I'm not voting.

Mark G, Thursday, 9 August 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Worst poll evah? Or worst Geir poll evah? Or are those the same thing?

Tom D., Thursday, 9 August 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

They are the same thing, but this is not it.

Mark G, Thursday, 9 August 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 9 August 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

The correct Stones inclusion would have been Emotional Rescue.

Yeah, right, this is why we post to ILM. ;-)

INDEED. I would have almost voted for it, if Gaucho wasn't on there.

kenan, Saturday, 11 August 2007 02:26 (eighteen years ago)

Let's Dance is a funny choice to me

same here -- doesn't most of his 80's stuff pale in comparison? I mean, it's no 70's Bowie, but it's hardly maligned.
