Please help me identify this INSTRUMENT

It's in the song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" (composed by A.R. Rahman). Hear it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_2gW3zwMMQ .

The instrument I'm looking for comes in with a melody at from 2:13 to 2:33. It sounds like some sort of flute or pipe layered a few times, but I honestly have no idea. If anyone could help me out, I'd be very happy.

I will try to help...but tell me, why are you listening to this?

Aja, Thursday, 9 August 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

It sounds like a sampler in monophonic mode with pipe and flute samples for oscillators and the portomento is being adjusted in real time or the player is messing with the pitch wheel while he plays the part.

I'm just glad that Erik Estrada is expanding his worldwide appeal.

Grargh!! Is no such Erik Estrada!!!

And Aja, this song is one of the most revered Bollywood songs. If you take a step back a bit and try to disregard the apparent "silliness" (which is not so silly at all, but rather, a culture that is quite foreign to our own and seems 'weird'), it's really a very great song.

xxpost my first immediate reaction was that it was something synthesized; some sort of keyboard, perhaps. But I think it might be a traditional Indian instrument. Aren't there any Indians on ILX?

Stevie D, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

that is, to quote Ms. Lampanelli, Slurpee Indian, not casino Indian.

Thats a cool song, I love Bollywood stuff.

My (Indian) friend is OBSESSED with this film...I'll ask her via Facebook tonight...(I like this song, too)

(based on my very, very limited knowledge, it's probably just one of the many type of bansuri flute)

(side note: if you're wanting more recommendations, that same friend often makes me GREAT, GREAT mixtapes of Indian music, both pop songs and Bollywood tracks)

hmm, all the bansuri's i could find sound too much like normal flutes.

Stevie D, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

this just sounds like a synth to me

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 9 August 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'd say it's a synth too, could be a live flute effected later but I don't know why they would bother.

one year passes...

I want to know about the instrument in Flipper's "Sex Bomb." It's the high pitched sound.

it's funny, I always for some reason associated it with a sea animal as well, but I chose a dolphin (maybe because of the band name)
