Oh man. This is way too hard. I absolutely love this soundtrack. I'm torn between "I must be dreaming," "Queen Bee," and "Prefabricated." Most of the other tracks are equally great, but a lot of them are available on other records ("Veteran of the Psychic Wars," "Heavy Metal [although the version on the soundtrack is by far the superior one],"). Whatever happened to Riggs, anyway?

Jeff Treppel, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm abstaining because this has long been my vote for the very worst film of all-time.

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 10 August 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Aww I shouldve voted. How could this movie be the worst when Heavy Metal 2000 exists? I think I like this movie. It's sexist as hell but it's so over the top you have to respect its audacity.

This movie was significant because I don't remember anyone using the term "heavy metal" to describe music before that. It coined the name of a musical genre, or so it seemed at the time.

Bimble, Monday, 13 August 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

Bimble, check out the lyrics to Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" from 1969 or so, maybe earlier.

Actually, I haven't seen Heavy Metal since the 1980s. At the time, it seemed like a Yes record cover come to life...for two freakin' hours (or so). NOT my idea of a good time. Or even a middling one. Or even an awful one. More like a fingernails yanked off my fingers sort of time. It MAY be slightly better than I remembered it. But hells no, am I gunna seek it out to make sure.

Kevin John Bozelka, Monday, 13 August 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it was pretty bad, and I was the perfect age to have loved it when it was released. But then, I was never one of those swords-&-orcery-comics geeks. (I was a geek of a different stripe.)

Anyway, the soundtrack was certainly better than the movie deserved. BÖC
woulda gotten my vote if I'd noticed this poll at all.

Fuck, how did I miss this? I already wrote a love letter to it here.

For me, it's a toss up between "Working In A Coal Mine", "Mob Rules" and "Reach Out".

...although "Prefabricated" rocks as well.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and the movie was pathetic, of course (although pugilism would have ensued had you said that to me at the time).
