there was this ad hoc swapping thread a few days ago amoungst all these people who knew each other in other ways in nz anyway
i proposed something more formal but nobody responded to the actual _idea_ and just continued linking semi-randomly on that thread
so here's the idea again :
you could set up a thread/site as a hyperlink pool of peoples' wants lists, and maybe more useful still peoples' got it lists
i think ILM users could volantarily each help each other out here -- go to the pool/database, browse or search, owners/volunteers/shills could leave comments about each item - - knowing who's got what allows whomever to either note comment or just email (hyperthetical user) me about swap, opinion, comparison to common-ground music etc. -- I needn't reply, but parties might find this process mutually useful
this is just taking a database like all-music-guide and adding an auto-swap-meet capability -- with all-music the auto-buy link is already there, but having a "discussed music auto-link" to owners of that "got it list" (ie automatically) might be useful too ???
commercial interests have found it very easy to make purchasing music online a mere push-button thing -- here we are using computers at what they are best at doing very systematically in the name of commerce, and here in ILM discussion on miriad disparate items proceeds on an ad hoc opinion basis, when your computer could just as systematically be emailing you to let you know that there's a discussion of [my pet topic list] (for instance)
it's taking two established uses of cyberspace and combining them -- has someone done this ? oh, it's not commercial but it'd be useful
because
I find that the more i can talk to someone about some bit of music that i can't hear first (but could buy from the other side of the world), the more informed my purchase/handle -- would this be more or less of a waste of time assuming that a bad buy is a waste of time and money ?
this is a sort-of obvious idea, but look, there was already another thread proposing _organised_ second-hand music here, there goes another, etc.. -- how about a _music_ match-making "I LOVE Music" system ? another auto-swap-meet
what do you think ? sleep in on it ?

If anyone seconds this, I'd be willing to give it a go, my freebie
site has full perl capabilites, and all i've done with it so far is
make a piss poor (and currently illegible) bulletin board system
(ahem). I'm probably going to think about doing this anyway, and I
need a bit of perl practice, but it would be nice to know if anyone
other than george thought it a good idea.

tripod and prohosting. though i should add that PROHOSTING = SHIT
BASTARDS AND I HATE THEM FOREVAH. (despite the quick to load banner,
ace space and bandwidth, they were v unreliable and then my site
vanished). tripod has shit bandwidth and a uber-complex banner, but
perl works a treat.

If anyone would like to help me test the site that I've got working
so far, e-mail me. I have written "the core", i.e. just enough to do
the job, but I want some testers to suggest the most important
additions. I have my own ideas, but I want to see what you think.

I'll promote this again cos I posted that plea just before
greenspun crashed. I'm looking for maybe a couple of people to
help with this.
It's for swapping ANYTHING, but it's all keyed to "musical
artist". There's nothing clever, just a way for people to register
swaps and wants, a clearing house if you like to get people in
touch.
