My first poll! I've used the track order on the American version which appeared as volume three of the Speed Limit 140 BPM+ series. Pick your fave (note: the version of "Lord of the Null Lines" is NOT the more famous Foul Play remix).

This is nearly impossible IMO. But I'm wagering that "Mystic Stepper" or "Open Your Mind" will take it.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 12 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

tough, but i had to go w/foul play.

artdamages, Sunday, 12 August 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

One thing that is clear from this comp is that circa-'93 Moving Shadow was absolutely unfuckwithable.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 12 August 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I went with "Lords of the Null-Lines". This is one of my favourite compilations ever.

Tim F, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

close call between omni and hyper...

i choose hyper..

Jack Battery-Pack, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I'm thinking this might be my favorite hardcore/darkcore/jungle comp ever. The Dark Side II is just about the only one which I could see thinking better this, but it's nowhere near as consistent.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 12 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

The Slammer is the one I know best by some way and I had a big moment of appreciation for it the other day so no contest really.

blueski, Sunday, 12 August 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Monday morning bump. Should we do volume two next? Sub Base dominates that one IIRC.

Alex in SF, Monday, 13 August 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

No, do History of Our World next.

"Mystic Stepper" for me please.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:53 (eighteen years ago)

i think open your mind or mystic stepper will win also, but going to have to think about the others before casting a vote

Filey Camp, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Open Your Mind all the way, but dear lord this has reminded me how fantastic this compilation is. I really don't think there's a bad track on it...was also the first CD "jungle" compilation I ever bought (was it '93?), prior that it had just been loads of tapes off the radio and from events.

Bill A, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

darned formatting!

Bill A, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:25 (eighteen years ago)

Lords of the Null Lines for me: despite being overshadowed massively by the Foul Play remix at the time (although admittedly Foul Play were in a phase where they could do no wrong)

I'll venture to say that either "Definition of Hardcore" or "Routes from the Jungle" give this a serious run for its money as a compliation, however.

Iain Macdonald, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

The Foul Play remix is great but I actually prefer the original "Lord of the Null-Lines" - it's not as interesting rhythmically but it's so jam-packed with great little moments and samples. It's like the pinnacle of 'ardkore whereas the Foul Play remix is moving towards jungle.

"There's a VOID where there should be ECSTASY!"

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

I do love "The Slammer" and "Unity in Dub" too though.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:35 (eighteen years ago)

This is one of the greatest compilations ever assembled. The way it kicks off with "The Joint" is just shattering, plus that creepy open space in the middle of "Underworld" before the beat kicks back in followed by the full-on onslaught starting at track 6 and continuing through track 11 capped off by the mellow pummel of "Open Your Mind"...

I think the only thing keeping me from picking "Unity In Dub" is that I liked the original "Unity" more, which means it has to be Hyper-On Experience.

I think the first three Speed Limit 140+ BPM compilations are my pinnacle of music.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't notice the transposition of the first and last tracks from The Joint LP to Speed Limit Vol 3. Nuts! Per yr post HI DERE it makes a real difference to the flow of the thing, I've always been used to being lulled in by Foul Play and left battered by The Joint.

Bill A, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I've got to admit that everytime I look at the original tracklist I get confused! The Speed Limit version seems much more pleasingly sequenced.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

"No, do History of Our World next."

The problem with doing History of Our World is that it's really hard to think of those tracks as distinct in the context of that mix.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

"Mystic Stepper" for me. I've said it a zillion times on ILM but this is one of my favorite albums.

Matos W.K., Wednesday, 15 August 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

d'cruze for the evil evil time-streched win!

tricky, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

uh, stretched.

tricky, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

whereas "lord of the null lines" has the void/ecstasy sample, "want you now" simply embodies it (much like this comp as a whole).

tricky, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

dan perry burned me a copy of this years ago & i can never thank him enough

and what, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

YES

I MADE A DIFFERENCE

HI DERE, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

i just don't hear what makes 'Lord Of The Null Lines' so good. maybe if i'd been more familiar with it at the time...instantly liked 'The Frightner' tho.

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

OK the Foul Play mix is a lot better but that's not what won this poll.

blueski, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Great samples make it so good. Still I agree the remix is much better and I don't think it's even the fourth or fifth best track on this comp.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

I was so close to choosing "The Slammer" instead. Oh well.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 16 August 2007 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

Oh come on guys - what about the evil three blind mice synth sounds!?! "Lords of the Null-Lines" is totally unstoppable.

"Underworld" deserved to get a vote or two though, I think.

Tim F, Friday, 17 August 2007 01:36 (eighteen years ago)

Tim OTM.

HI DERE, Friday, 17 August 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

Well really everything deserves to get a vote! I mean "A21" is the only track on the whole comp (except "The Joint" which was exclusive, I guess) that wasn't on every other comp/mix from the period! Every one of these tracks is a monster!

Alex in SF, Friday, 17 August 2007 03:43 (eighteen years ago)

nine years pass...

I was about to start a poll for this, lol

(I don't think my vote would have changed)

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:01 (nine years ago)

"Underworld" is still super underrated in the context of this comp

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 1 December 2016 18:28 (nine years ago)

seven years pass...

I might choose “The Slammer” now, but really everything on this compilation is perfect.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Austin of “Unity in Dub” subsequently recorded as Radical Sound, who made one of my top 5 all time jungle tunes “What Is Love”.
