Considered his best period by lots of people, the 50s Capitol era was a fruitful period for Frank Sinatra. Even though the songs were not self-composed and mostly covers, he still managed to invent the "concept album" with his series of themed albums. But which one of those is the best?

Had a hard time myself choosing between "Swingin' Lovers" and "Sings For Only The Lonely". But chose the former because listening to an album consisting of nothing but sad and very slow ballads may be a bit weary after a while.

I won't pretend to have heard all, or even most, of these - but I'll vote for Come Fly With Me, since it's upbeat, swingin' and fun.

I only know his sad sap albums for the most part. I think Wee Small Hours is my favorite, though the other ones of lesser fame are also quite good.

"Lonely" cause I play it more than the rest on the list. "Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra" gets most play overall though.

A Swingin' Affair just over Wee Small Hours.

Swingin' Lovers really nails the Sinatra/Riddle sound.

A surprisingly interesting poll from Geir!

Where Are You? - for the full Ava Gardener cathedral-of-erotic-despair vibe. Epic stereo strings, too.

An almost impossible choice since most of these are grand. Songs For Swingin' Lovers is just too mah-velous for words, but Only The Lonely approaches Closer levels of bottomless despair.

Only the Lonely. Sinatra, for me, is about heartbreak.

If there's a more demented moment in all of Sinatra's catalogue than the trombone solo in SFOTL's "It's a Lonely Old Town," I haven't heard it. The madness love can drive you to in 32 queasy bars.
