My Bloody Valentine and The Pixies seem to be largely agreed on as objects of desire, but who else is consensually loved (or loathed) by the ILM massive?

Nick Southall, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As much I likes 'em, Disco Inferno get unusually pampered on this here ILM.

Brian MacDonald, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kraftwerk, Chic, Public Enemy

michael bourke, Sunday, 21 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk, Boards of Canada, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Outkast (?), the Kompakt label. Notable exceptions for each of these, but most of them are pretty high-up.

Who here has heard of, but does not like, Wesley Willis?

With tracks brimming with absolute honesty and sincerity of emotion like "The threw me out of church," and "I'm sorry that I got fat," how can you not love him?

Right, Andrew, Wesley Willis: severe mental illness is just so ironic and amusing, isn't it. Wesley is lucky he has a few real friends to look out for him, as there are far too many people in the world who are prepared to point and laugh and be head- butted and then keep right on laughing while he talks about being sick and miserable. Chuckly Wesley Willis fandom is in many cases Chicago indie kids' lowest and most evil moment.

Bitsuh, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck, universally loathed? NOT WHILE I'M HERE, MISTER.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OT: Get off your highchair Bitsuh--If it weren't for those same pretentious Chicago indie-kids who buy his records and go see his shows, Wesley would probably be a dead crazy homeless guy. Because of them, he's got an income, an occupation, and people that help him out. Sure, Wesley's severe mental illness might be a sick joke, but so is the system that allows people like Wesley to live on the streets in the first place, and you can't blame indiekids for that shit.

J, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so who can we blame?

jess, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm really not clear on how paying people to completely disrespect their human dignity makes it all that much better. Particularly when you're paying them indie-rock wages. For every person around here who finds Wesley's music interesting in a human way, there are five playing a more complex game of Let's Make the Fat Kid Dance then Laugh at Him.

Bitsuh, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Here" meaning Chicago, not IL*.

Bitsuh, Monday, 22 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'I'm really not clear on how paying people to completely disrespect their human dignity makes it all that much better'

But at least Wesley's got a FUN job. ('Job' = 'paying people to completely disrespect...') btw I am going to keep bitching about my job until somebody gives me another one, and until that blessed day I will continue to consider EVERYBODY IN THE WORLD better off than me

dave q, Tuesday, 23 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
