100 Heaviest Albums

In the past few weeks I’ve been getting into heavy music in a big way, and I didn’t see a similar thread when searching. I also don’t have all that many heavy albums and would like to hear some suggestions. “Heavy”, not just loud -- I’m thinking really dense, layers and layers of murkiness/distortion, swirling masses of noise, etc. Though metal will no doubt have a big presence (and that’s great!), let’s try to keep the genre boundaries wide open. Here are a few that have been in my player recently, to start:

100. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (may as well start off with an obvious one…)
99. Bardo Pond - Lapsed
98. Merzbow - Sphere
97. Dinosaur Jr. - You’re Living All Over Me
96. John Coltrane - Om
96. Boris - Amplifier Worship

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 13 August 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

honorary one-song mention for terry brooks & strange "ruler of the universe." the "guitar solo" (really a guitar, feedback and echoplex solo) is this thread all over.

33. Mainliner - Mellow Out

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

loveless is kinda heavy though.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements isn't, however. despite my love for that album.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

Well, actually, I was being serious with those two albums. I'm not getting this definition of heavy as "really dense, layers and layers of murkiness/distortion, swirling masses of noise." I always thought that Black Sabbath: Paranoid epitomized heavy and thus could be used as a guide to measure all other instances of heavy. Maybe that's wrong. Nevertheless, the definition Mark lays out describes those MBV and Stereolab albums, no? Ok maybe not every track on the Stereolab. But "Jenny Ondioline" fits the description, right?

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, OK, it is kinda heavy. And I did think again after I posted that. But would it really be in the 100 heaviest albums ever? I mean, HEAVY. Depends what kind of list this is, I guess. If this was a mainstream magazine poll, I'm sure they'd include it so as show that heaviness doesn't always crush in the same way. But I'm sure there's 100 albums of absolute morbid planetary obesity that causes you to puff out your cheeks and say 'OOF!!'. Can't we strive strive for that?

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

32. Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments

latebloomer, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

28. jesus lizard - liar

Zeno, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

But I'm sure there's 100 albums of absolute morbid planetary obesity that causes you to puff out your cheeks and say 'OOF!!'. Can't we strive strive for that?

I hear ya, Michael. But that's not that kind of heavy this thread is after. I think you and I would agree that The Melvins and Saint Vitus belong on a list of "100 albums of absolute morbid planetary obesity that causes you to puff out your cheeks and say 'OOF!!'." But that's not necessarily what Mark is looking for.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I should have stated my definition as more open-ended -- and like I said, I don't own too many heavy albums and the ones that I do have tend to match up more with the "layers and layers of murkiness/distortion, swirling masses of noise, etc." So that kind of stuff tends to be show where I'm coming from in regards to sonic "heaviness", but clearly others are coming from different places, and that's fantastic for building this list.

I think my goal was to have some kind of list where both MBV AND Master of Reality/Saint Vitus/Melvins hang together. But that's my own fault for not stating the original post clearly enough. (And while I think in one regard Loveless isheavy, part of the reason it's so interesting is that it seems really thick and murky, but at the same time, somehow kind of gossamer, thin and "wispy" but that's another question).

I was debating naming the thread 100 Heavy Albums rather than 100 Heaviest Albums -- while it might not seem to make much of a difference it probably would have better suited my goal of getting a nice big list of albums that could be described as "heavy" in any kind of way.

But in any case there is a LOAD of stuff on here that I'm not familiar with at all that I'm very excited to check out. I'm sure hearing this stuff might change what I think of as "heavy."

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

OK.... I just don't think it's that heavy. 100 Wooziest, maybe.

Michael Dudikoff presents Action Adventure Theatre, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

Well, in that case, Mark, you should definitely hear that Angelic Process album. It splits the difference between heavy and woozy. One of my faves of this year.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)
